Kadir was born and raised in a dysfunctional family cursed with poverty. Dreaming of a better life, he worked hard to maintain good grades and a decent social life for himself, even though his immediate family made it difficult. He recalls his father telling him that "he was nothing special," but he didn't care. He wasn't trying to be special, but he did want to stop surviving day to day.
