Over continued or repeated exposure, this connection strengthens, allowing more precise feelings, then thoughts, then precise thoughts, and eventually memories and sensations to be communicated, until she and her partner are entirely in each other’s head. This can be exercised subtly, as brief exposure can still nudge her and her partner into thinking at common ground, or not subtly at all, as the intimate experience of staring at one another for hours can leave both Iphi and her partner momentarily confused about who they are. The connection shuts down immediately if eye contact is broken, but its strength decays much more slowly. Resuming contact right away, she and her partner could pick up right where they left off. Days later, they’d have to start from square one. Iphi can visualize her connections and their strengths, and keep herself aware of what is being shared and what will be shared next. She has always broken off short of memories, and rarely goes beyond surface-level emotions, out of respect for privacy. Empathic Connection is always-on at some level, but in a way that’s much weaker and much more difficult to recognize as magic as opposed to mundane connection. If either Iphi or her partner cannot see the other’s eyes, as through tinted glass, sunglasses, or a one-way mirror, Empathic Connection is impossible.
Iphi and a friend are having a lighthearted argument about something trivial. Empathic Connection, in its passive state, has been helping to keep things light, but the simple fact that they're friends is more influential. Eventually, mentally exhausted from keeping up the friendly ribbing, Iphi offers to "settle this in our heads." They lean in, stare into each other's eyes, and Iphi flicks Empathic Connection on. They continue the discussion, but slower, and more thoughtfully. Within five minutes, they are no longer speaking. Within ten, they agree to disagree. Iphi and an angry customer are having a heated argument about the correct price of an item. Iphi would really like to back down, but company policy looms over her. Instead, she uses Empathic Connection, and catches the customer's eye. Voices quiet down quickly. Iphi feels the background life-frustration fueling the customer's anger, and the customer feels Iphi's quiet desperation to be understood. Muttered apologies are exchanged. The customer still doesn't want to pay full price, but they keep talking more civilly, until the manager is invited, rather than demanded, to join the talk. Iphi is being mugged. She tries to use Empathic Connection to make the mugger reconsider, but he already knows how scared she is, and feeling his aggression doesn’t do her any good either. The mugging proceeds as normal, and is over before Empathic Connection can reveal deeper, more compelling emotions.

Illusion (4) Phantom Sensations Iphi can subtly encourage other beings to experience sensations from her imagination.
Iphi conjures up an exact sensation in her mind, and may then, selectively or not, share it with others who are, on some level, aware of her presence – whether they’ve only heard a sound she made, or can see her outright. Electronic observation does not count. The “accuracy” of this sensation to what she is trying to create is not perfect – she cannot always micromanage what other people experience, but can always give their subjectivity a push in a given direction. A completely inaccurate attempt to create music, for instance, could cause someone to hear whatever song is in their head at the moment coming from somewhere far away, while an accurate attempt would allow Iphi to orchestrate a precise melody at a particular volume from a pinpointed apparent source. Iphi doesn’t know what other people actually experience, only what she means for them to. The accuracy of the illusion is dependent on these factors, from greatest to least significance:

Iphi’s mental grasp on the sensation. She can’t reliably make anyone experience something she hasn’t before, and the better she knows it, the more likely it is that someone else will feel it convincingly. She cannot, for instance, simulate childbirth, but can easily make someone feel like they have to sneeze, especially if she’s feeling that at the moment. Distractions, or split attention – as when she tries to sustain multiple illusory sensations – also weaken mental grasp, so that acting with even two different senses at a time is very delicate.
The expectedness of the sensation. Minds are less likely to cooperate with an attempt to create taste if there’s nothing in their mouth, and if people can’t believe what she wants them to see, they’ll see something that makes more sense instead. There’s a loophole here: Iphi could prime someone to experience anything, just by informing them that illusion magic will be at play.
The breadth of Iphi’s illusory “broadcast.” The more people are affected by the illusion, the more similar that illusion is to what Iphi intended, and the more likely everyone is to agree that they’re seeing/hearing/feeling/smelling/tasting the same thing. Phantom Sensations are difficult, but not impossible, to precisely direct with single targets. She couldn’t manage it on an off day.

Iphi is a famous chef! Her arrival is announced on the restaurant's intercom, she steps out from the kitchen in front of a roaring crowd of adoring fans of her often baffling work. Waiters stream out from behind her carrying plates of pancakes. But when everyone starts eating, they realize that even though they smell like pancakes, the pancakes taste like... mint? Wow, she's done it again... Iphi is chewing mint-flavored gum right now. Iphi is creeping on a couple walking through the woods at night. Wanting to spook them, she imagines the sound of someone yelling "boo!" and tries to project it from the ground below their feet. She doesn't think of any speaker in particular. One believes that he hears distant, haunting humming from somewhere up ahead. The other thinks he hears the bushes rustling. Iphi would like to show a friend an illusion. She tells them as much, and turns around away from her friend. She carefully takes in the room behind her, and projects that toward her friend. Her friend gasps in surprise. She's gone - they can only see her shadow!

Personality

Affable Iphi likes to get close to people, and stay close. Intimate friendship gives her life. Rejection and betrayal kill her.

Gentle Iphi is passive and appeasing, sometimes to her own detriment. Animals and children often find her attractive, but when faced with conflict, her priorities are: surrender, then get away, then try surrendering again, and lastly fight.

Genuine Iphi seldom keeps secrets, doesn’t know how to lie, and doesn’t want to learn.

History
Iphi never met her biological parents, but they were apparently alive when they gave her up. She doesn’t hold it against them, and she doesn’t seek them out. She was adopted at 4, raised lovingly in the lower-middle-class by a witch mother and a human mother in a nowhere town not far from Montreal. Her early life had some embarrassing acting-out moments, and bouncing away from that swung her and stuck her on the opposite end of temperament. From high school and early witch training onward, she navigated life politely and with good company, and she hasn’t found a reason to break from that yet. Speaking of witch training, Iphi’s was slow and lax. She developed her magic remarkably well given the circumstances, but only given the circumstances. Canadian law mimics but doesn’t entirely mirror the US zero-tolerance policy for spellcasting on other people, so despite a cumbersome system of contracts and consent, she’s had a lot of chances to try it, sometimes even legally. It’s fun. It feels good. She doesn’t intend to give it up. She moved to the United States almost a year ago, hoping to find the most lucrative use for her skills and abilities, and make a difference in her parents’ lives. North Bennington was close, familiarly small, and the strong witch presence in Shipden Peak sealed it for her. She's been bouncing between low-paying service jobs for a while. Now... what is she really going to do?
