Originally from Seoul, South Korea Quirk Type: Other Quirk (As of this moment): Emotional Manifestation: Hye-Jin has a familiar that is a manifestation of her metaphysical state. The familiar appears to be made of some kind of strange material that people theorize is akin to antimatter. It also appears somewhat sentient. The familiar regularly prefers the form of a hummingbird but its physical appearance and capabilities change based on the emotions or metaphysical properties it is fed from Hye-Jin. The familiar is swift, powerful, nearly indestructible, at first glance, and it even has exceptional endurance. It will also almost always reconstitute itself if it is somehow damaged. Its range of capabilities and forms seem to stretch the limits of your average quirk but, Hye-Jin tends to keep it in its base form whenever possible. The familiar is mysterious and frequently difficult to control (particularly when fed potent emotions). It is relatively unpredictable and, when in use, can leave Hye-Jin herself open to attack. Under severe circumstances, the familiar has even been known to turn on Hye-Jin herself. She uses music and a set of wireless earbuds as a way of giving herself more substantial control over the familiar and the emotions she is feeding to it in combat. Removing these loosens her grip on her power. The familiar demands an amount of willpower from Hye-Jin relative to its power and its state is dependent upon how much willpower she is able to muster. Hye-Jin can more easily recharge her power by isolating from others and relaxing. Strengths: Adaptability Loyalty Support Combat Perseverance Weaknesses: Unreliable Quirk Emotional Reconnaissance Rescue Difficulty Making Friends/Allies Background/Personality: Hye-Jin was a timid girl born to her quirkless parents in Seoul, South Korea. Her familiar and power manifested itself at a young age and to an unpredictable and sometimes devastating effect. As children tend to have difficulty regulating emotions, so too did Hye-Jin at her tender age. After a few incidents (the last of which resulted in a temper tantrum that had the familiar demolishing the house) Hye-Jin’s parents had her shipped off to a quirk reform school, in Japan, that specialized in troubled kids with troubled quirks. Hye-Jin wasn’t a troubled kid though. She was a sweet girl even if she did have trouble controlling her power. Her parents however, didn’t know what to do and didn’t see it that way. Part way through her schooling, Hye-Jin’s parents didn’t pick her up one semester, leaving her stranded at the reform school. If it wasn’t for a kind teacher, who had wanted a kid of her own, taking her in, who knows what would’ve happened to her. This same teacher later chose to adopt Hye-Jin, giving her a permanent, loving, and accepting home in Japan. The teacher, now adoptive mother, worked hard to enroll Hye-Jin in a private school where she hoped she would develop a sense of belonging and an ability to control her quirk. One of these things wound up being true (to an extent) but, developing a sense of belonging was not yet in the cards for Hye-Jin. As a South Korean cast away and immigrant to Japan who had a power frequently viewed as wild and dangerous by her peers, Hye-Jin struggled to fit in. If it wasn’t for her finding a friend in Sav, during the entrance exam, she may not have found belonging at all. Nonetheless Hye-Jin is grateful for all the opportunities she’s been given and she hopes to prove that it doesn’t matter how other people see you, you can do good in this world and defy expectations. How did you get into UA: Exam What was a fateful moment in the exam or recommendation: Hye-Jin struggled her way through most of the entrance exam. The constant changes in her familiar proved to be a significant interruption and obstacle at times, forcing her to score in the middle to low range for both reconnaissance and rescue. Even Hye-Jin’s above average score in support wasn’t enough to catapult her to success. If it wasn’t for a classmate named Sav, teaming up with her to take down one of the biggest “villains” during the combat portion, she may not have made it into UA at all. Lucky for her she not only passed but made a new friend.
