The first idea is almost exactly the premise of a Netflix series "Midnight Mass" which I thoroughly enjoyed watching and could also see myself thoroughly enjoying writing a roleplay around.

But I love writing fantasies as well. Did you want to the one kingdom to be the focus of the setting initially and then add dimension as the storytelling dictates?
