Few things seem to faze her, she often behaves like she has forgotten where she is or what she’s doing, and she only seems to take enjoyment from a successful experiment, solving a stubborn problem, or outsmarting an opponent. She knows that most civilians and marines have low intelligence, and assumes that most pirates are the same, and having this assumption proven again and again has resulted in a natural air of aloofness and condescension. Still, if she cannot discuss science, at least she is willing to discuss philosophy, and can get along with rationalists and romanticists alike, so long as they are able to think critically about their worldview while remaining principled and maintaining a consistent ethos. The easiest way to break her stoic facade is to lean hard into incompetence.
[sub]Biography:[/sub]
Born to a rich family in West Blue famed for the production of musical instruments and musical talent, Handel did not want for anything growing up. However, generations of tradition had devolved into a strict dogma; the males of the family became craftsmen and maestros, while the females became singers and songwriters. Handel had always had an interest in the craft that went into creating instruments, but what made matters worse was that Handel couldn’t sing to save her life, and had no musical sense, being incapable of writing emotionally rousing pieces of music. Eventually she snapped and broke with tradition entirely, running away from home and applying to become a marine. Noticing her intelligence, Handel’s commanding officer suggested she go through officer training and find a scholastic specialization. Handel soon found that she not only had the knack for tactics and worked her way up to the rank of commander, where she supported her captain with brilliant strategies against disorganized pirates. Before she continued up the chain of command, she was scouted by Cipher Pol, and joined CP1 as a weapons researcher and intelligence officer. Using her background in musical instruments, Handel found many ways to weaponize vibrations, and she was eventually relocated to Impel Down where she had plenty of research subjects to test her toys on. If she wasn’t torturing prisoners for science, she was on covert missions, carrying out extrajudicial killings or offering tactical support to maintain law and order. Feeling like she had ‘made it’, she wrote home to tell her family of her success. Her closest brother came to visit her at the prison island, but his melancholy smile and the words left unspoken revealed an uncomfortable distance. Before he left, he crafted a music box for Handel and told her to listen to it in private after he had gone. When she did, the music spoke of her complacency, the cruel individual she had become, and the suffering she had caused. Her brother lamented the loss of the innocent sister he once knew and how she had traded one oppressive dogma for another, and the realization broke Handel. Handel did what she had done the last time she felt trapped by a system that sought to control her; she slipped away in darkness, but not before destroying all records of her work that were within her reach. Handel wandered the ocean, contemplating what she could do to atone for what she had done until one day she resolved to break the world government as a pirate and joined the Sea Reavers. She started out as a musician, but her true talents soon became known, and she became a weapons engineer for the pirate fleet, as well as a tactician and capable combatant. However, the Honorstar Garrison Raid truly strained her abilities and in the face of imminent defeat, retreat was the only sound option. Retreat and regroup.

Combat Information

[sub]Combat Role:[/sub]
Swordsman
[sub]Rokushiki Prowess:[/sub]

Geppo - Mastered
Soru - Mastered
Kami-e - Mastered
Shigan - Unmastered, current technique: Tool-Assisted Shigan (TAS)
Tekkai - Unmastered, current technique: Instrumental Guard, Tekkai (IGT)
Rankyaku - Unmastered, future technique: Rankyaku, Tool-Assisted (RTA)
Rokuogan - Unmastered
[sub]Physical Capabilities:[/sub]

Known Frequencies: Through experience and experimentation, Handel has learned the frequencies at which common rigid materials shatter. Those materials are: wood, iron, steel, stone, and bone (frequency accounts for distortion caused by intervening flesh).
Harmonic Dowsing: However, the frequency at which an object harmonizes is highly dependent on shape, so the known frequencies are approximations. Handel has a technique for triangulating the correct frequency of an individual object. She has to strike the object with her blade vibrating at a certain frequency, the sound of the impact and the changes it makes to the vibrating blade is then remembered. If she can successfully do this with three different frequencies, she can dowse the exact harmonic properties of the object she is striking. For completely unknown or foreign materials, Handel will need to dowse at least five times.
Incredible Hearing: Handel’s hearing is so impressive that she has trained herself to acquire the ability to echolocate and has been able to fool the ignorant into believing that she has Kenbunshoku Haki (she does not). It is incredibly difficult to sneak up on her, she has perfect pitch, can easily recognize and remember people’s voices, and can tell similar sounds apart (ie. cannon shot versus exploding powder keg).
[sub]Fighting Style:[/sub]
Rokushiki, Sword-and-Shield Style, Area-Control, Traps, Versatile Tool Use, Sneak Attacks, Defense Penetration Because Handel’s combat involves wielding a cumbersome musical instrument, she essentially has two modes: fast and unarmed, or immobile and armed. Without her double bass, Handel can use Soru to dash around, Geppo to jump through the air, and Kami-e to avoid damage, but otherwise has limited offensive options. Armed with her double bass, Handel cannot use Soru, Geppo, or Kami-e, and because Handel has relatively low physical strength, she has not yet mastered the offensive and defensive skills: Shigan, Rankyaku, and Tekkai, instead relying on her items to assist her in mimicking Shigan and Tekkai. She will eventually develop a way to mimic Rankyaku, which she will be able to use without her double bass, giving her fast mode offensive capabilities. It is unlikely that Handel will ever master all six Rokushiki, so she will never attain Rokuogan, though she may find a way to mimic it with sonic shockwaves.
[sub]Equipment:[/sub]

String Yataghan: A bass bow with a forward curving blade on the spine, when the bow is drawn along the strings of the Bass Shield, the String Yataghan can be induced to carry a frequency that harmonizes with and shatters specific rigid materials, allowing it to slice through many things quite effectively. If used to stab an opponent, Handel refers to the attack as Tool-Assisted Shigan: Treble.
Bass Shield: A double bass with a steel-plated back, it is primarily held by the neck in front of Handel with the back facing the enemy as a shield. When the bow of the String Yataghan is drawn along the strings of the Bass Shield, the spike at the bottom of the bass can be induced to carry a frequency that harmonizes with and shatters specific rigid materials, which Handel can use to drive into opponents with surprising ease, an attack she refers to as Tool-Assisted Shigan: Bass. By driving the bass’s spike into the ground and using a weaker form of Tekkai to stiffen a few key points in her body, Handel can hold the shield quite steady and make it shrug off forces that would otherwise send it flying, a technique she refers to as Instrumental Guard, Tekkai.
The Spiral Choir: Essentially a massive collection of Den Den Mushi that have been trained to project sustained, pure tones on command, Handel leaves these Den Den Mushi in specific patterns and arrangements to harmonize and create cymatic zones that increase the effectiveness of her sonic attacks exponentially. They can also be commanded to generate disruptive and disorienting noise, or mimic voices to confuse enemy communication. Handel also uses them to eavesdrop, intercept other Den Den Mushi signals, and perform long-range assassinations using her special technique. By calling someone via Den Den Mushi, she begins speaking very quietly to prompt the victim to put their ear as close to the Den Den Mushi’s mouth as possible. She then plays a very loud, very piercing sound that has been reported to kill lesser foes, put slightly stronger foes into short-term comas, or stun very powerful foes. This attack is called Den Den Requiem.
Harmonica Chaps (future gear): By strapping large harmonicas to her thighs and calves, sound is generated when Handel swings her legs quickly. This will allow her to eventually develop Rankyaku: Tool-Assisted, giving her the ability to throw out sonic blades with every kick. Slides on the harmonicas can be adjusted to alter the frequency, giving her rankyaku blades different properties. By combining Geppo, Soru, and Rankyaku, Tool-Assisted, Handel can blast through the air and create a literal sonic boom.
