Her blood. While there's nothing special about her blood - unless you're a vampire willing to risk it all - her magic is based entirely around using her own blood. Rune circles drawn in her blood, bloody, whip-like tendrils, and beyond. It's a rather unique skillset and one that has earned her very little trust as such powers are seen by some to be unnatural. Despite her circumstances, Nabi remains ever optimistic - in public, anyway. She learned early on that the worst thing you could do was show how much something bothers you, as such she puts up a strong front, a brave face, because if she didn't then everyone would know her as "the girl who cries in the bathroom" rather than just "the weird girl with blood magic" While not exactly a social butterfly - though not for lack of trying - Nabi doesn't just shrink into the back of a room, huddled against a wall or the like. She may not be Miss Popular but if people are going to talk about her anyway she figures they might as well do so because of her unique fashion or her overly sentimental and sweet demeanor. It's not uncommon for Nabi to show up in bright pastel patchwork clothes or with a box of cinnamon rolls that she casually mentions putting her "blood and sweat" into which is likely why some people don't take one. [/sub] [sub]WEAKNESSES[/sub] [sub]Anemic - Given the source of her magic is her own blood, she is prone to having a weak constitution and to tire easily. If she goes overboard she runs the risk of dying. Overly physical activity is a drain on her and after using her magic in anything other than moderation or as necessary causes her to require recovery time. Often by sleeping. Nabi has a tendency to put her entire being into things, which normally would be seen as a strength but given her magic this means she has a reckless streak that could do more harm than good. She needs someone to tell her not to go overboard, or someone to be there to catch her when she passes out. Nabi doesn't forget things easily and to that end she can be impatient especially when it pertains to getting things she thinks she wants or needs. She gets annoyed when people don't listen to her or when they belittle or look down on her and while she doesn't physically lash out, she is not above holding it against them in the off chance they ask her for a favor down the line. Her biggest offense involves eating a large amount of garlic fries whenever a certain vampire does something that causes Nabi stress. Most of her fellow magically inclined sorts have been anything but nice to her - the only difference between them and the bullies at her old school is that the bullies at her old school had the decency to be upfront about things. In Nabi's experience, witches talk and mock in secret but it hurts all the same. She would have thought her fellow witches and wizards would have a little empathy but perhaps she was wrong in her assumptions. It has been the vampires that Nabi is most fascinated by. While her experience with them has been...interesting, to say the least, it was a vampire that has made her feel more...normal. She knows she is probably getting her hopes up but she would want nothing more than to be truly accepted in their clique, but she can't help but wonder how many of them see her only as a bloodbag given her abilities. If she could be one of them, then maybe she wouldn't have to feel so alone anymore... Nabi has had very few interactions with werewolves but given they tend to stay closer to their own, she has very little desire to get to know them first. She's open to befriending them but they have to be the ones to show that they are different from the witches and wizards who have made her life at Hawthorne anything but enjoyable.[/sub] [sub]AMBITIONS[/sub] [sub][sup]▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔[/sup][/sub] [sub] ➽➽➽ Nabi wants to show that blood magic doesn't make her any more or less abnormal, that she is just like the rest of the spellslingers of the world. Magic was something that existed in tall tales and movies and the like, though Nabi's first exposure to magic was at school. Just a normal, average, regular school for regular boys and girls. Nabi had thought she would have a normal school life, friends and homework, crushes and tests, clubs and graduation, but Nabi made a mistake that she could never have accounted for: she showed up to school being poor. Her mother had died in an unfortunate robbery gone wrong and after the funeral, many sharks and shady sorts took the opportunity to cash in on the debts her father had. Nabi's first day of school she had the nerve to wear clothes twenty years out of style - and three times too big - and that was all it took. Day after day she was mocked and ridiculed. It started harmlessly enough, name calling, making fun of her lack of wealth, but then it became more physical. Shoving. Hitting. The ring leader was the queen of the school, some stuck up hussy who routinely boasted that she secretly had magic powers and she was just waiting to make a wand. Her goons believed her, because if they didn't they were sure to be the next victim. Such was the grasp she had on her fellow students. Nabi knew she was full of it, but if she spoke up it would only end poorly. But eventually it did end. After half a year of being bullied, Nabi was victim to a physical assault that left her crying and bleeding in the bathroom for the crime of showing up to school. It hurt. It stung. Her blood was warm. Her blood was boiling. As blood dripped onto the floor, Nabi saw it eat through toilet paper, not the way liquid eats through paper, but the way fire burns through it. Everything moved in slow motion as Nabi looked at the bruises on her body, and saw the blood leave her body like a bullet, splattering onto the stall. Nabi didn't show up to school for two weeks after that. When she returned, she interrupted her bully saying again how she was magic. Nabi started laughing, a deranged sort of laugh, and called her a liar. "You say you're a witch? Then where's your magic? Huh?" Nabi shouted as she grabbed the arm of her bully, and from a small cut on Nabi's arm out shot a blood-whip, wrapping around the arm of the bully and squeezing tight. Tighter than a blood pressure machine. So tight that the bully's arm was turning black and purple. Screams were heard. Tears. And all Nabi could do was laugh and demand her bully use magic. Prove it. Nabi was forcefully pulled off and thrown to the ground as the bully passed out. Nabi was, of course, expelled for what she did. Her father had no idea what to make of it, until someone that knew his wife, Nabi's mother, showed up and explained the situation and what the next option was. Nabi was going to Hawthorne though she was warned that her magic wouldn't exactly make her the most liked person on campus. Nabi didn't care. Perhaps she should've. Her first year so far has been far from ideal, with the same sorts of people whispering about her. The only difference is it feels somehow even more hurtful because they're supposed to be on the same team. But all hope is not yet lost. Like, physically strong. Like even in her human form she looks like she could deadlift a car and then run a mile while fireman carrying three sacks of potatoes or something equally as heavy. She is a physical specimen and her body reflects that, needless to say that is enhanced when she goes wolf mode. If all she had going for her was her physicality it would be impressive, but she's more than just her muscles and attitude. Ochanya fancies herself as a natural leader and it's hard to argue with her - and not just because those who argue with her tend to get the death glare at best and a threat of injury at worst. She knows how to inspire loyalty in those worth taking in and fear in those who would stand against her. To those who are in her care, she will be like a mother lioness looking out for her cubs, to those who stand against her she will be as an unrelenting tornado, destroying everything in her path until it is unrecognizable. It is her willingness to put herself in the line of fire when those she cares for that gives her a little bit of softness to her hardened edge; sure she carries and acts like a badass but she cares deeply for those in her pack and they, in turn, trust that she will always have their back in anything, from help with homework or advice on how to ask someone out, or the obvious of being the first one to fight on their behalf. Ochanya is the alpha in her mind and in her actions even if not in practice. Yet. Her name means Queen, after all. While she isn't as long lived as some certain blood sucking bastards, Ochanya is nonetheless fairly worldly given her age. It stems from her upbringing among people who shared cultures from different parts of the world. She often uses what she has learned from those old cultural exchanges when doling out advice - though the ironic thing is she rarely seems able (or wanting) to take the advice she is so ready to give others. [/sub] [sub]WEAKNESSES[/sub] [sub]Ochanya is quick to act which can be a benefit and a detriment depending on what it is. Her hatred of vampires is well known and she is not shy about letting them know and if she even hears word that one of them was talking bad about her or her pack, she will march over and do something about it. Some have said this makes her hot headed and they might be right, but she never attacks first - other than when she attacks without knowing the whole picture, which makes her more rash than anything else. Ochanya's primary motivation is to become the alpha of every werewolf on campus and that has some people accusing her of only caring in the political sense, as in saying only what needs to be said in order to curry favor and win over support. Like most things, Ochanya is not shy about where she stands and what her goals are and in her mind if you're a werewolf and not on her side then when the time comes you will either be on her side by force or be forced to find a different pack. This can make it difficult for her fellow wolves to see her as the friendly, motherly figure she wants them to think of her as and in her single focused mind she doesn't seem to see the bigger picture of what this means for her socially. Her cockiness borders on arrogance and she can't resist a challenge. Everything with Ochanya is a challenge, even friendly competition has a tendency to become a bit unfriendly when she's involved. Ochanya hates losing. Card games? Eating competitions? Athletic events? If she comes second, it's as if she came last place. One time she was invited to play a game with some witches and wizards and when she was out of money twenty minutes later she smashed the table and threw the board onto the roof of the school. It's still up there. Ochanya expects the best from herself which is why she pushes herself to be a winner at all things. To her credit, she can back up a lot of what she boasts and wins a lot of the time, it's just those times where she doesn't that people have to beware her wrath. No one seems to care that vampires get preferential treatment: they're the largest group, some of them damn near live there for like thirty fucking years, and they have 'special' curriculum. They are the reason why Hawthorne hasn't seen the goddamn sun in forever. Werewolves have one professor on campus. One. Special fucking treatment. And she's supposed to just accept it just because they have numbers? Fuck that. Vampires think they're above everyone else. The pale blood sucking freaks. When it comes to her fellow werewolves, Ochanya is very simple. If you're with her, then you're with her. If you're not, then you'd better decide quickly if you want to be her enemy or not. Being with her comes with a bevy of benefits. Being against her comes with potential bodily harm. It's a simple choice. Ochanya doesn't mind the witches and wizards so long as they don't give her a reason to. She likes them fine enough and knows they have their own things going on. She feels like the witches and wizards are more similar to the werewolves than the vampires but that might be because she's trying to play nice with the spell users because having them on her side would be a great numbers addition when opposing the goddamned blood suckers. Still, even without that, she is fine with them and even apologized to the ones whose game and table she broke. She made them a new table. She likes making things. Ochanya's father fought in the Nigerian Civil War but he never liked to talk about it with Ochanya and she could tell from a young age that pressing him to do so was not a good idea, but it was his experience in the war that made it hard for Ochanya to love the man who was her father. Respect him, sure. But it was hard to love a man who raised his hand against his family. Family is important to Ochanya and it wasn't until she was taken in with the pack, after escaping a particularly painful night that left her mother in the hospital and her father 'sleeping off the drink' in jail for a night, that she started to truly understand the value of family. Ochanya was cursed with lycanthropy at age 7 and by the time she was 13 she thought of her pack as her real family, particularly the leader, Oba. Oba was a passive man who led the pack simply because of seniority and while Ochanya didn't respect him, she did love him as a father. It was with the pack that Ochanya learned about different cultures and tribes, because every other full moon there would be a gathering from different African and even European and Indian werewolves where they all came together and shared food and stories and experiences. Ochanya loved these and though she was never allowed to sit at the elder's meeting, she would always be first to sit and listen to some of the storytellers speak on history and tradition. As Ochanya reached her teenage years, she began to think less and less of Oba, whose pack was growing smaller and smaller because others were sensing weakness. Ochanya encouraged Oba to not take this lightly, and to strike back and make his pack strong. Stronger. Strongest. It came to a head after Ochanya, after boldly claiming that Oba, whose name means king, would be the alpha of Nigeria. This wasn't taken well by the biggest pack, who challenged Ochanya. Oba, covering for Ochanya's folly, stood up and accepted the terms: if Oba won, he would inherit the biggest pack, if he lost so too did he forefeit his pack, which was his life. Ochanya didn't realize at the time that that meant his life was literally on the line. Oba lost. It was not pretty. Ochanya watched as Oba died and Ochanya was not welcomed into the victor's pack because he had no room for "boastful, ignorant pups." Only he didn't call her a pup. He used a far harsher word. Ochanya was alone. Packless. Riddled with guilt. It was her fault Oba died. And she ran. She fled Nigeria. She wound up in India. In Asia. In Europe. She used the knowledge learned from the past meets to survive and barter. She was nomadic out of necessity, but she vowed that Oba's death would be the last time she let someone else fight her battles. The last time anyone died for her. Eventually, Ochanya found her way to Hawthorne, supported by a small group of wolves she lived with in Douro Valley, Portugal. It is at Hawthorne that Ochanya wishes to start making her own pack. To become the leader she believes herself to be. Her name means Queen for a reason. No one can really explain it, and it's not magical, but people find it hard to say no to Delphi even if they resist at first. Of course this has made her somewhat spoiled but for the most part her asks have never been too outrageous that it's a huge deal, but it's only a matter of time before that changes. To her credit, she does put in the effort to make sure whatever she asked for actually comes out well so it's not her just wasting everyone's time. Not deliberately anyway. Arguably her greatest strength, though, is her ear for music. Delphi is obsessed with music and sound to the point where she taught herself how to read music even though she doesn't play an instrument, though she is teaching herself piano and violin inbetween flute and clarinet. She's not exactly great at playing them herself yet but that hasn't stopped her from being able to conceive of compositions and put sounds and concepts together. She knows what sounds good and she takes inspiration from everywhere. Where someone hears wind in the trees, Delphi hears a serenade. Where someone hears a truck blowing its horn, Delphi hears a dirge. It's uncanny how Delphi has never heard a sound she hasn't liked. In keeping with her ability to get what she wants, Delphi has a strange passion for seeing things done. If she asks for permission to do something, she will get it done and often focus so much on it that the rest of her well being suffers for it. She is driven and focused and her obsession with perfecting everything she does would be more hurtful if she wasn't also aware of the need to take mental days. Her strength is her passion, the downside is her passions tend to fall outside the wheelhouse of things that people in her community tend to care about - because they are so often in the wheelhouse of the normal mortals. Some people consider the fact that Delphi is hard of hearing in her left ear and that she has to use a hearing aid to be a weakness. Delphi doesn't. She sees it as a badge of honor. In her words: "The greatest composer of music in history was deaf. Why would I let this stop me from taking his title?" Her hearing difficulties were self inflicted. When she was younger, she heard about the deaf composer and figured she had to be just like him to be better than him and so intentionally tried to make herself deaf. She was stopped by her siblings but cried about it and it made their parents think hear aural issues were caused by her siblings. They got in so much trouble. [/sub] [sub]WEAKNESSES[/sub] [sub]Delphi is not an especially talented witch most aspects of being a witch. She is good at the element of wind because sound is vibration through a medium and the most common expression of such is air. In matters of elemental pursuits she is fine, but in everything else she doesn't seem to care and she believes the fact that she comes from old money and old blood gives her a safety net to not take other studies so seriously. Delphi likes to get her way and if she doesn't she will sulk. She has the mindset of someone who has never really struggled because she is rather spoiled. Failure at things she has a passion for turns her into a deep, deep depression; the longest lasted about two years when she was twelve and that was just her not getting picked for a holiday jingle contest. A contest she spent ten weeks on. For twenty seconds of work. She tends to rush into ideas with her whole chest, for better and worse. Growing up with siblings and an extended family always doting on her and giving her attention has made Delphi anything but independent. She needs attention. She craves it. She needs people to talk to her, to pat her on the head, to take an interest, even if just pretending, in what she does or is doing. Delphi doesn't act out for attention, but she craves it all the same. If they haven't been around that long or have no interest, then she sees them no differently from anyone else. They're fine? She can't tell who is or isn't a werewolf when they're in human form unless they tell her but she figures the werewolves are just like big dogs so she prefers them in that form. Kind of like a support animal. An overgrown puppy. She figures most werewolves hate that but she doesn't care. Her favorite supernatural entity are sirens because of their affinity for singing. The voice is as much a musical tool as an actual physical instrument. She loves the sirens and wants to befriend them and see if they can do an opera or a choir. She has no real thoughts on witches and wizards beyond her family, but she does like the regular mortals who don't have the luxury of magic at their disposal. Delphi would give up magic in an instant if it meant she could accomplish her goals. It goes without saying but anyone who has musical ability regardless of their status as supernatural or whatever goes right to the top of Delphi's approval meter. As the youngest, Delphi had both a sheltered and spoiled upbringing, one that she thrived in, even if it did give her somewhat unrealistic expectations going into adulthood - namely that everyone outside her family would accept her eccentricities or give in to her demands. Delphi was never really punished as a kid but neither did she intentionally get her siblings into trouble. Other than the ear incident, but that wasn't intentional on Delphi's part. Her obsession with sound and music came from a young age where she watched a cartoon movie where a mouse did magic and made brooms come to life. She had never seen such a combination before, of music and magic, the latter of which was something she grew up around given her family. She didn't know magic could be used in such a way and ever since she plunged herself into the symphony of life. Her parents bought her a piano after she begged and begged. Delphi still hasn't learned it but she at least can do more than just the scales which is something. Her siblings had their own focuses, Delphi had hers but it was Delphi who was seen as strange and weird by grandparents and uncles and aunts because of how unrelated to magic it was. Over time her parents became more and more concerned with Delphi's passions and less and less subtle with their suggestions that it was time to leave the 'phase' behind. They hoped that Hawthorne and her siblings would help her focus on the more important aspects of their kind, but for the most part her siblings seem content to let Delphi be Delphi - something to which she is incredibly thankful even if they still bully her in the loving way siblings do. As she enters this more independent phase of her life, Delphi isn't quite sure how her life is going to go, but she is just going to do what her heart tells her. It's a pretty good party trick but it also stems from her love of history and of stories. Her two best classes at Hawthorne are History and Archeology. She is fascinated by older things, which is why she tends to like the vampires (the ones who aren't annoyed by her, anyway) because they have lived lives that mortals like her can only dream of. It might be hard to tell from looking at her, but Himani is quite experienced with 'roughing it' and has a love of outdoor activities like rock climbing, camping, hiking, and picnics. It stems from her 'off-season' activities. In-between semesters, especially in the longer break periods, Himani goes to a different country or monument and explores. She's been to archeological sites and spelunked and raided tombs. Not really raided but explored. It was all above board. Every new semester she tries to share photos of her trip, but most people don't want to hear her go on and on. But she loves it. She might not seem like a typical magical or supernatural being since her best subjects are the ones that seem to have the least to do with magical business or supernatural interests, but rest assured Himani is a wizard when it comes to charms and spells having to do with her elemental affinity of earth. She is quite a natural when it comes to protection charms. [/sub] [sub]WEAKNESSES[/sub] [sub]Himani's greatest weakness is her lack of confidence. She doesn't feel like she belongs where she is and her own issues, particularly with her appearance, tend to keep her from realizing her own strengths. To her, being surrounded by people who are all so 'next level' when it comes to their appearance and ability only keeps her feeling like she is unattractive by comparison. She thinks her 'thick, bushy brows' and her slight overbite are what keeps her from being like the others. In a way, her readiness to accept what she thinks are flaws is a confidence all her own; she doesn't let her perceived imperfections hold her back from trying to socialize, but she does use those 'imperfections' as a reason as to why she seems to not belong to any real social circle. Himani doesn't quite know how to say "No" because she wants always to seem useful and helpful. The downside is this tends to have her bite off way more than she can chew and, in some cases, have people take advantage of her. She has stayed up all night doing history homework for half the class before at the cost of her own grade on an assignment. It's not that she doesn't have a backbone, it's just that she is desperate for people to like her which stems from her self confidence issues. Despite her knowledge of cultures and mythologies and history, when it comes to the more earthly pursuits of the supernatural, such as herbology and alchemy, Himani struggles. She still tries hard, but if a cauldron melts or explodes in class, chances are it's because of Himani. She has gone to the nurse's office a record number of times in her second year including a rather infamous incident where her skin turned yellow and her hair a sickly green. It could've been worse. It could've been like the time she almost drank an accidentally made poison in her first year. She wants to get better, though, if only for a well rounded education. She will often try and partner up with them on assignments and probe them for any information about things from before her time. She is fairly certain they all find her annoying, except for Hyoon who Himani acts as sort of a secretary-slash-gopher for, but that never stops her from trying to sit with them at lunch and them all moving to a different table. The werewolves she has no strong feelings towards. She likes their whole community and family vibe and respects their boundaries enough to not try to butt in on that. She's not one of them, she doesn't want to appropriate their werewolf culture stuff. But if she were to ever ask any students to join her on a hike or something, it'd be a werewolf. They just seem less likely to complain. Her fellow witches and wizards are who she often compares herself to, in addition to the vampires. Some of the upperclassmen all seem so perfect and together and magical and Himani can't help but to be intimidated, inspired, and afraid she'll never measure up to them. She admires them. She wants to be like them, but being a great witch seems so far out of her wheelhouse. She can't even fix her eyebrows or her stupid overbite, how could she ever be like them? How could they ever even notice her?[/sub] [sub]AMBITIONS[/sub] [sub][sup]▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔[/sup][/sub] [sub] ➽➽➽ Himani wants to be a great witch. Her interests seem so 'pedestrian' to some of her peers and she doesn't feel that she measures up to the more supernatural and magical sorts around her. She feels like she's trying hard but to no avail, and if she stopped and thought about it for too long it would destroy her. So she doesn't.[/sub] [sub] в í σ g r α p h ч [/sub] [sub][sup]▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔[/sup][/sub]
Himani Chakrabarti, and yes she introduces herself with her full name every time, doesn't come from a noble magical family but she does come from a large one. The Chakrabarti's have their origins in Bangladesh but in more recent times they have settled in Europe - something which makes some of the older Chakrabarti children laugh in the sense of "We left the British Raj but wound up in Britain anyway." which seemed a lot less funny to the older generation. But children rarely cared about the experiences of their elders. Every Chakrabarti has magic in them and every Chakrabarti has gone through the Academy system for as long as it has existed. Himani has looked into the origins of her family, but it's difficult to get the full picture as many of them are long since passed. Her father, like her grandfather before him, runs the Chakrabarti Cafeteria, one of the prime spots for supernatural sorts. They're known for their curries as well as their cakes and chai teas but more to the point they enforce a strict neutral territory policy on the premises. Vampires and werewolves are forbidden from starting things as long as they're in the Cafeteria and for those wayward supernaturals who are unable to pay or are newly overwhelmed, they offer sheltering services but her father often says "We're not a charity" even as he lets those with nowhere else to go stay a while, free of charge. It's because of this upbringing that Himani was able to grow a fascination with various cultures and histories, because some of the vampires had lived for three, four, five hundred years and that was fascinating to her. Himani's older sister is in magical law enforcement while her older brother is a famous cricket player. Naturally she has a lot to live up to given their successes and since her younger brother is being charmed into taking over the family business, it leaves Himani at a weird spot where she isn't quite sure what her future holds even though she is technically an adult. Her aunt, who runs a perfumery, has told Himani that it's okay to not have her life figured out, but Himani can tell - or so she thinks - that her family talks about her and what a disappointment she might turn into. They seem to support her regular trips to various ruins and historical sites, being the ones to give her the funds to travel. All they ask in return is that she stay safe and never forget who she is. The problem is that Himani Chakrabarti doesn't quite know who she is at all. Maybe she'll figure it out.
[/cell][/row]
