I could see that working as a potential idea. Perhaps your character is an 'invention' from the R&D Department as an artificial magic user.

So... this is a bit more complex, but for the more 'beastial' creatures it would be one you could tame, and then summon as you needed them, but for creatures with more human-like traits you'd be able to form 'contracts' with them in exchange for their powers. Think Chainsaw Man, but you don't get AS screwed.
