A global superheroics contest, teams of seven competed for fame and glory - plus a near guarantee of being scouted by the Avengers and other premier superhero teams. For the past two years, the contest has been dominated by another Margaret Carter Team, the Young Avengers - Eli Bradley (Patriot), Teddy Altman (Hulkling), Tommy Maximoff (Speed), Billy Maximoff (Wiccan), America Chavez (Miss America), Kate Bishop (Hawkeye II), and Cassie Lang (Stature). And while our heroes qualified for the Contest of Champions under the aid of coaches Lady Nimue, Usagi, and Ser Nemo, their odds of defeating the reigning champions were slim at best. And so they took matters into their own hands, sneaking out after hours to use the Framework, an advanced virtual reality training simulator. Unfortunately, their ally Arcade soon betrayed them, loading them into various video games and forcing them to fend for their lives, as a death in the game would happen in reality. It was only by banding together - and a fair bit of luck and time travel - that they managed to escape the simulation and defeat Arcade. Having put away their first villain, the team then set out for the Contest of Champions, where they defeated the cheating Hex Girls of Strange Academy. The victory was entirely unanticipated, due to a combination of missing and/or dead coaches, and the disqualification/withdrawal of half of their team mates. Yet they persisted nonetheless. In the climactic fight against the Young Avengers for the crown, they were pushed to their limits, each hero having to rise to the occasion in a fight no one truly believed they could win - and they emerged triumphant. Sabine, Percy, Dorian, Danni, Andy, Leah, and April became the new reigning champions. Some might argue its mission is even simpler: to educate and train the next generation of superpowered [i]people[/i] - whether they be heroes or villains. All that matters is that its graduates prove to be exceptional. To that end, students rotate through sets of classes from day-to-day, spending roughly half of their time on superheroics (e.g., search and rescue, alien languages, teamwork, power usage) and the other half on traditional education (e.g., science, math, history). There are no general education requirements at the Margaret Carter Institute beginning at the high school level. The high school entrance exam assesses students in a variety of subjects, ensuring that the basics are mastered, before students go onto specialty education. The Academy operates on a quarter system, and some classes do have pre-reqs, which can be met by either taking further placement exams or taking classes at the Academy. No students are allowed into active combat settings.* Beyond classes, students are housed in the dormitories in Stark Hall, where each floor has its own faculty-in-residence. Many of the original six Avengers have hit retirement age, allowing others to take on their mantle. Rather than having a permanent roster of Avengers, the line-up fluctuates based on the need and situation, a concept referred to as the Avengers Machine. Once an Avenger, always an Avenger. Whereas one mission may be ideally suited for the talents of She-Hulk and Sam Wilson, the next one may require Captain Marvel and Thor. The Fantastic Four act as the Future Foundation, their ranks swelling with the addition of others such as Franklin and Valeria who share their noble mission: [i]solve everything[/i]. The X-Men have left the tutelage of Professor Xavier behind, with a similarly ever-changing lineup of the old guard and the new.
