Hiya! Been a hot minute since I've been around here, but this looked super nifty! And I've recently come into uhm...a lot of free time. So, I thought I'd try my hand at writing up a sheet or two. I maaay be a bit rusty, so please just bear with me haha. He has a number of tattoos incorporating and covering up the more noticeable scars. As for piercings, his tragus and nostril on either side are pierced, but he doesn’t often wear jewelry in them. Personal Style: Teddy is a firm believer of the holy trinity of broke and/or large blue collar men across the country - Hanes, Gildan, Wrangler. Given his…condition, the guy goes through clothes pretty quickly. As such, cheap is king. On any given day, it’s a safe bet that Teddy will probably be in a plain colored tee and a pair of jeans. If it’s a bit chilly or if he’s trying to dress to impress he might even break out the good flannel. For footwear, he tends to prefer sneakers and you better believe those bad boys are white New Balances. He’s essentially got the fashion-sense of a middle-aged Dad - all he’s missing is the lawnmower and beer. But he’s content. A walking, talking Shakespearean tragedy unto fashion, sure, but content nonetheless. He’s the kind of guy to give someone the shirt right off his back, then apologize for it being too big. He likes to be seen as somebody reliable and useful, but perhaps weighs that approval more heavily than healthy when determining his self-worth. When things go wrong, he only blames himself, rationalizing it by thinking that he just wasn’t good enough or didn’t do enough. And when things go well? Well they could have been better if he had just worked a little harder. In some ways, he channels it well - using those negative thoughts as fuel to motivate him to work on constant self-improvement, but the constant loop of self-flagellation into overworking himself towards unrealistic or unattainable goals leaves him feeling perpetually dissatisfied. Beyond the pessimistic feedback loop, however, there is an earnest, kindhearted guy. Sure, it may take him a bit to warm up to new people, but once you're in, he’ll move mountains to see a smile. His muscles became incredibly dense, his skeleton hardened. He is able to shift back into his mostly human form, but that requires concentrated effort and willpower to maintain for any length of time, and while it resembles a humanoid shape, his proportions are still a bit off. He takes a large number of pills daily to assist in maintaining the shifted form, but his default, natural state is his mutated form as seen above. It was a gradual change at first - he just seemed to be growing earlier than the other kids, yet by the time he was twelve, he was already growing a full beard, sparking some concern. His skull began shifting by thirteen, partial snout forming by fourteen, and by fifteen he seemed to be moving past the awkward in-between stage and landing about where he is now. By sixteen his appearance seemed to have reached maturity, with only his height and overall size really changing. Even at eighteen, his growth hasn’t really slowed all that much. While his appearance was rather off-putting to his community, obviously outting him as a mutant, the full extent of his powers wasn’t apparent until a schoolyard brawl ended with Theodore mauling a classmate - scarring the kid and leaving him with a pair of broken ribs. The resulting backlash, combined with Hannah’s failing health, led the two to leaving Fairbanks, Alaska to stay with Hannah’s sister Amanda, a widow struggling to make ends meet in California. General History: Theodore Thompson was born to Hannah Schultz and Michael Thompson out of wedlock, the result of a one-night stand and an ensuing whirlwind romance that ended when Michael walked out on the new mother only months after their son was born. Despite that, little Teddy was raised in a loving household, in a fairly nice community in Fairbanks. He played youth hockey, made friends, and had a rather average childhood. He didn’t have a Dad, but Hannah was a Supermom, so it all worked out. On Teddy’s street, was another boy Teddy’s age, Tommy. They played on the same youth team. They were in the same class. Their names were similar. They were best friends. So naturally, Teddy spent most of his time at Tommy’s house. And it was there that Teddy would meet the person who taught him how to be a man - Tommy’s father, Dante. The boys were close, anyone could see that, and Dante’s father treated Teddy as one of his own. He would always be working on some old hunk of junk, entertaining the boys’ pathetic attempts at ‘helping’ him until they actually started learning some things. So it became routine - the boys would come home from school/practice, then help Dante with the junkers while they all listened to the radio. But then the changes began. The hair. The nails. The mocking. The bullying. People were looking at him differently, treating him differently. Even Tommy began to find excuses as to why he couldn’t hang out with Teddy anymore. Teddy’s mother still loved him, he knew that, but he would hear her crying at night, when she had thought he had fallen asleep. In the end, it was only Dante that never stopped treating Teddy like who he was: just a kid going through some changes. Teddy would continue heading over to work on the junkers with Dante every day. Tommy, having long since outgrown both the cars and Teddy, would find places to go or things to do - for a while, before he simply stopped making excuses and just outright ignored him. So it just became the two of them, working on the cars to the sound of the radio. Sometimes Teddy would talk to Dante. Sometimes they’d work in silence. Despite everything, those were some of the happiest times of Teddy’s life. Teddy was fourteen when the incident happened. The wrong kid just simply happened to say the wrong thing to the wrong person at the wrong time. Teddy lashed out. He had gotten to experience firsthand just how fragile people could be. It terrified him. He was expelled, with the bully’s parents looking to press charges. It more or less bankrupted Hannah. Her health took a bad turn - cancer. And, unceremoniously, one eight hour flight later, Teddy was uprooted to California, living with an aunt and cousin he had never met. Auditioning for the Margaret Carter Institute was his cousin Micah’s suggestion. It was seen as more or less an opportunity of which Teddy would be insane to not at least attempt to take advantage. No one actually expected him to be accepted. Now starting his fourth and final year at the Academy, Teddy prepares for the next chapter of his life. It would be his final chance at the Contest of Champions. Between the prize money and the potential to be recruited into a team, victory would mean finally being able to pay for his mother’s medical bills and potentially help rebuild the life that he had ruined for her. Failure…failure wasn’t an option. Proposed Arc:

Teddy at this point sort of operates in a headspace where everything he’s doing is in spite of being a mutant. He places himself at a distance to others. He heavily medicates himself in an attempt to ‘hide’ it. It’s a point of shame for him. I think, ideally, he would arrive at a place where he accepts himself for who and what he is, as well as becoming kinder to himself, letting go of the guilt he puts on himself for things he really couldn’t help.
While the first point suggests him finding a way to live in his sort of in-between state, I’m open to an alternative path where he maybe completely rejects one side of himself or the other. He either finds a way to permanently shift to his human form at the cost of the Ursine, or he says ‘fuck society’ and goes full primal bear mode. Man or bear. Or shucks, we could even throw a pig in there somewhere just to spice it up, yeehaw.
I think that even if he ends up not having what it takes to become a hero, Teddy would want to continue on to something that still helps people. So, his plan B is to try to leverage the academy into a potential med school acceptance after undergrad. And if he’s not cut out for that, fuck it, he’ll move out to the boonies and start a garage.
