Leah craves the act of living her own idea of being untouchable, she wants to be the strongest person in the world and build the highest walls because she's afraid of what could come back to haunt her. Imperator had, allegedly, took a piece of his daughter's DNA when she was born, and scoured it for any evidence of the "X Gene." Once she was old enough to understand what a mutant was, he explained to her that she had superpowers. Leah didn't understand this at first, because it was strange that her father would know that before she displayed anything. Imperator explained that he ran a test shortly after her birth to "prepare for the inevitable." Two days later, they concluded she was a geokinetic, and possessed heightened physical abilities. Ultimately, someone else discovered Leah's powers for her. This was not true. It wasn't until long after Leah had attempted to kill him that she realized what she really was. A giant, from the world called Jotunheim. Her dad had gone there, kidnapped an infant giant, and then genetically modified it with a strange device to make her look mostly human. Then, her raised her as his own, in his usual sadistic ways. She's only gotten flashes of it, but having broken the fragile change after Andy was badly injured, it's now clearly obvious just how deep the trickery went. [/hider] [Hider=The Hidden Mountain] There once was a kid named Mayra Pavon, daughter of an absolutely evil man. Imperator was a high-profile mercenary who worked for people he did not disclose to Mayra until she was around 10, and wanted to bring her under his wing. His reasons were varied, but one of them was to allegedly teach her to control her new abilities. Mayra wasn't given a choice, and so for the next two years, she was trained extensively in close-quarters combat by a man who could outthink her every move five minutes in advance. It was painful, being knocked on her ass every time she attempted to make a single swing on him, and it put a massive strain on her relationship with both Imperator and her mother, who believed she was simply away with her father on business trips. She never fully understood why things had to be this way, and she eventually rebelled against him in an act of rage. One day when she was home, she confessed everything to her mother. Mayra told her everything, about her being a mutant, about the so-called training, even about Imperator's workshop. Unsurprisingly, she didn't believe most of that, but it didn't matter in the end, because Carlos Pavon came home just in time. When his wife questioned him, he didn't even react before he shot her. The whole house fell in on them. Imperator was a superhuman genius, but in his own hubris he failed to account for the possibility that Mayra's training had been more productive than he realized. There is nothing left of that house but a veritable mountain of stone and rubble. She ran, and ran, and ran. The rest is somewhat blurry in her mind, but she walked through the Arizona deserts for hours on her own, before eventually flying away on a rock when she came down from the emotional rollercoaster of watching her mother bleed out, and possibly burying her father alive. Mayra eventually found the Avenger's Academy, and used the opportunity to live a different life than what was destined for her. All she hopes now is that no one uncovers her history, or digs into legal records to see if her name is Leah or Mayra. [/hider] [hider=Agatha's Prophecy] Leah spent the next three years of her life at a school for superheroes, deciding to be better than the parent she killed. It wasn't easy, having to suddenly be social and make nice with an entire building full of people she didn't know. In fact, it [i]sucked.[/i] She didn't know how to talk to other kids, she didn't understand the little social [i]things[/i] they did where they looked at each other and immediately understood each other. Leah was only there because, one day, she wanted to fight the bad guys that made life hell for other people. Everyone was told and led to believe that her best shot at this was the Contest of Champions, defeating some of the schools [i]best[/i] to unseat them and be picked by the Avengers. For most of the time she spent here, she wasn't convinced. After all, she'd been training to fight before she could even form proper words. She knew better than to hold back and [i]spare[/i] terrorists, she only needed this place until she was eighteen. Right? Wrong. On day one of her third year, there was a carnival at the school. Fortunes were being told by Agatha Harkness, and Leah wanted to get an expert opinion on something she hadn't been sure of. Cards were drawn. Ten of Swords, Temperance Reversed, and the Queen of Wands Reversed. Agatha revealed a cycle to her. One where a tragedy struck, and an identity was forged only to be torn down again. Great forces reshaping her life on a whim, and she was at their mercy. It confirmed that her old man was still haunting her one way or another. But Agatha pulled two more cards, Five of Wands and the Hermit, to reveal that the only way out was through. She, and she alone could break the cycle before it happened again. She reached for a needle, and accidentally knocked the scissors off the table. Her hand went out to catch them, and her foot jerked back. The scissors stopped mid-air, only to go skidding off when she realized what was happening. She lifted them up again, from across the room, and figured it out. [/hider] [Hider=General History] Marlena comes from a family of two. Just her and Carl Evans, her father. Her mother got dreadfully sick when she was twelve, and didn’t make it. Growing up in a big building, in an even bigger city, there were always a lot of faces around and not many quiet spaces to hide away in. Between the hours of school and the late evenings, Marlena had a habit of pulling away and not telling dad or her sister where she’d go. Sometimes she’d just take a walk, or skate around and probably hang out with someone who was chill enough about her. But there were always nights when Marlena was the only person awake in the entire apartment building, coming back at midnight because she felt like staying out longer. Marlena had picked up the hobby a month after the funeral, and despite the problems of a kid running around New York City unattended, it helped. She’d come home smiling over a trick she finally landed, handling things well enough in her own way that her dad let it slide. It became more than a simple hobby. Marlena stuck with it. At fourteen, she came out as trans to her dad. It was an awkward talk, but he was always the sort of man who opened his ears more than his mouth, so he took it well. Some people at school weren’t quite as receptive, but Marlena was surrounded by enough support to know she was ultimately accepted. That Summer, she took a big interest in changing up her appearance and name, and went back to school much happier. Her father was supportive in all the things she did, even if he didn’t always understand, and she really couldn’t have had it better. Except for the powers. As she got older, Marlena got into a habit of staying out later and later. Sometimes, it’d be midnight before she got home. Sometimes, she’d be up even later than that. All those hours spent awake when the city was asleep were spent grappling with the secret of her powers, she’d developed the ability to move things with her mind. Marlena could propel herself along on a skateboard without her feet ever moving to push the ground. She’d keep a knife with her in case someone stalked her, and she could twirl it above her hand like she was a damn wizard. She heard the horror stories about previous generations of mutants fighting tooth and nail, struggling for every single victory they ever got, just to not get killed. It had gotten better over the years, she knew, but looking into it in decret didn’t fill her with much confidence. These days, mutants didn’t hide, they went off to learn how to use their powers. They didn’t just hang out at home and play fighting games witj the kids across the hall, they hopped across the country to fight terrorists. The world didn’t typically mind mutants when they were on a screen, flexing their powers while they fought bad guys and saved the world- When they were [i]palatable.[/i] Marlena didn’t want to be a superhero. Or, at the very least, she didn’t want to change her life. Leaving home to train in some school full of wizards, aliens, demons and other mutants felt like the wrong life for her. Her vision for her future involved being known as Marlena, the girl with a great fashion sense and awesome tricks. Not Marlena, the mutant who wasted her potential on being normal. So she kept her powers secret. In the late hours when she was alone, she’d experiment with them just to be sure she didn’t accidentally kill someone if she ran into them, but they were for her alone to worry ablut, not someone else. She went to school, skated her way home, and just did all the usual kid things. But then she went home from school one day, and her dad looked [i]hurt.[/i] He stared a hole through her from the kitchen table, and he knew she’d been keeping a secret. Apparently, a friend from work spotted Marlena skating around as usual the night before, using her powers to twirl the knife he insisted she carry. They talked, and talked, and talked. She told him how she felt about it, and he felt upset she felt the need to hide it. But Marlena got frustrated, and then so did he. Neither of them wanted to yell, so Marlena walked away. It put a rift between them, making it awkward to talk to each other for the next few days. They made up eventually, but Marlena’s dad sat her down one day, and had a serious talk with her about it. He wanted what was best for her, he did his own research into things, and told her that he was going to send her to a different school. One that taught people to use superpowers well. And then the rift split back open. She didn’t want to leave home, she didn’t want to go to another school to fight people, and Marlena made it abundantly clear that this was why she hid it from him. Out of fear her life would get turned upside down. This time, they resorted to yelling. But in the end, Marlena was the teenager and he was the adult. So the decision was final, and she was sent to the other side of the country. They haven’t spoken since. [/hider]
