Charlotte, △△△, Kazumin, Persephone &Lorenzo

Charlotte had been bringing her teacup to her lips when the sound of yelling caught her attention. Her brows furrowed as she concentrated on catching all the words. Her gaze slid to the window as the undeniable noise of glass shattering filled the air. She set down the teacup on its corresponding plate and rose to her feet to stare at the window wordlessly at the Damien estate. She felt more uneasy than usual as she looked upon that mansion. Across the road and through the fence, the movement of Calbert’s guards running about could be seen in flashes of color against the green grass. She looked to Count Fritz, who stood by the window, briefly as she considered if they needed to call for help or perhaps alert Lorenzo. It sounded as if there was an intruder. The count would never allow such chaos to occur otherwise. Though Calbert’s well-being wasn’t the first to plague her mind, she did find herself concerned, especially for Crystal and Violet. Servants who were working outside assembled along the estate perimeter, confused and alarmed by the commotion. All except one. Amongst the slowly growing group △△△ recognized his fiery friend. Although he blended perfectly in with Damien’s servants, the years spent together made △△△ adept at spotting Peter in a crowd. Peter emulated the others in their befuddlement, swiveling his head around to search for the answer in their surroundings. When the marksman faced the direction of the window, his gaze caught sight of the noble behind it and moved on without pause or recognition. For a moment, △△△ focused on his own reflection—the fluid mosaic—before returning his attention back to the scene outside. There was no point dwelling on this particular inconvenience. He knew the simplest way to free himself from this infliction, but △△△ had no intention of pursuing that avenue. He would gladly live like this for the rest of his days rather than be “cured.” The cost was simply too high for his liking. Even if it fulfilled the devotee of the eastern Sea Goddess’s innermost desire. The group of servants simultaneously turned to the approaching guards. They exchanged a flurry of words and gestures to each other then hurried into the Damien estate. Peter in tow. Growling filled the room when Champion positioned himself on top of the coffee table. She and Count Fritz looked down to see the kitten take on a defensive posture. He was positioned for battle as always. First was first, she had to make sure her guest was alright. She clasped her hands nervously and looked to the count. “Count Fritz, I am deeply sorry if what’s going on is startling. This is unusual and I believe you should be hesitant to depart for now until it has ceased… I am going to go alert my father.” “It’s hardly your fault, is it? There’s no need to worry about me. I’ll be just fine.” While she had been moving into the next room, the loud boom of unmistakable gunshots could be heard. She cringed at the initial loud noise and covered her mouth to repress a cry. There were only three shots, however, they sounded closer to the Vikena estate. Charlotte whirled to Count Fritz with panic in her eyes. “Please move away from this room and to the other end of the household. I will be right back!” The count partially followed her request, taking a few slow steps towards the door and nothing more. My goodness. If last night hadn’t deterred the Varian and Alidasht Kingdoms from visiting again, surely today will… I am beginning to feel motivated to never return to this city myself. With a self-comforting exhale, she moved to the window and ducked underneath to peek outside. Damien’s staff seemed to be looking about the road now. She was certain that the city guards would be here soon as well. Charlotte then made her way through the dining room towards the foyer. He was about to follow suit when tapping sounds halted him. At the window, a giant rooster repeatedly pecked the glass. The pecking briefly stopped when the bird noticed that they got △△△’s attention then resumed until the count finally took the hint and approached the window. Using their beak like a finger, the rooster pointed to the side. △△△ turned his head just in time to see what required his immediate attention. “Is… that?” Cluck. “Hm.” Coo. “Well, Peter might get what he wants after all.” The rooster squawked in reply and tottered after their quarry. He glanced down at the small bundle of nerves on the coffee table. “There’s nothing to worry about, little one. You’re safe here.” △△△ whispered to Champion. “Aros.” The kitten showed no signs that he understood what the weird human said. Just as he did before, however, he remained still, so △△△ rewarded him with a slow, reassuring scratch on the head. “Or don’t. No one will blame you if you did make a run for it. Do what you must to survive.” After giving a few more head scratches, △△△ left the room. I wish Peter’s crush stuck with leaving bread behind instead of blood and guards hot on her heels. He adjusted the cuffs of his sleeves with a light-hearted sigh. Outside the Vikena Estate, Persephone put a finger to her lips and patted Kazumin’s head affectionately, then opened a window as quietly as possible. Once she’d checked the coast was clear, she ushered him inside and kept the finger to her lips, and then helped him inside. She quietly shut the window and ushered for him to follow her. Throughout the whole ordeal, they remained invisible. A quick glance around the room told her it was the dining room which was empty. After being pushed so hard, Kazu found himself completely exhausted to the point his body was running on fumes. The cloaked individual’s strangely affectionate touches and reminder to keep quiet were the only thing keeping him from passing out. As such, everything around him was a blur, his mind having all but checked out at this point leaving the blonde almost delirious. Struggling with Kazumin’s weight, the sudden adrenaline from running and the effort to uphold the magic, Persephone quickly dumped Kazumin into a chair and then collapsed onto the nearby sofa. She leaned over her knees and wheezed until she could catch her breath and gulped in fresh air. Once she’d collected herself, she stared ahead absentmindedly. The assist was greatly needed with his body lacking the strength to climb up through the window on his own. And quite the struggle it had been; so much so that his hand slipped out beneath him at the last moment causing him to land on his face with a pained grunt. A good thing he was too tired to do anything but let out a muffled groan, not even noticing his being dragged and dropped into a nearby chair. The Previous Night Persephone raced over to the window and glanced at Ruby. Her voice became hushed: ”Charlotte, can I come over tomorrow?” Charlotte looked over her shoulder. “Certainly? I live down the street in a brick house.” While recalling the memory, Persephone struggled to contain her laughter. This would not have been what the girl would expect. The room began to spin while butterflies rose in her stomach. The noise outside told her the guards were searching and she did not have time to waste, nor could she afford to use the magic any longer. Thus, she regrettably uttered the countercourse, ”Visio-”, and the pair of runaway peasants became visible. Charlotte rushed past them and she quickly stood up. If she let the guards in, they were screwed. Panting, she rushed to the doorway and poked her head out. The handkerchief dripped with blood. The panic and fear swam in Persephone’s eyes and threatened to drown her. She held a hand to her lips for Kazumin to stay still and remain silent. Kazu saw the cloaked person moving about and motioning towards him which only made him giggle as he held a hand to his nose due to feeling something warm.” Ooh looky…I’m a leaky faucet.” He giggled sleepily while wiping some of the blood dripping from his nose. (not bleeding as much as the strangers, of course) Upon seeing the red on his fingers his sleepy eyes widened a bit with a small gasp. “Oh wow… did you know our insides are red..um…juice?”” The blonde muttered in sleepy confusion, his head slowly drifting as he gradually started to nod off. Something softly clucked in response to Kazu’s question. Before the barely conscious farm boy stood a huge rooster with orange, green, blue, and black feathers. It peered into Kazu’s face and cocked its head to the side. Said blonde blinked in confusion and curiosity back at the rooster. ”Hey there, pretty birdy. Got no crackers so please no poking.” After coming to some kind of conclusion, it waddled to the other entrance where another figure waited. Together, they vanished into the kitchen. Charlotte’s hand grazed the railing of the staircase when the sound of muttering made her halt. The house was quiet and the additional new voice was unmistakable. She stiffened. Before she could quite process the idea, a hushed voice came from behind. ”Charlotte. Behind you.” Persephone’s voice was quiet but pleading. She ushered her over hastily with urgency. ”In here. Please! Hurry!” She had nearly jumped out of her skin despite the low volume of Persephone’s voice. Charlotte glanced over her shoulder with a fearful expression, her body language rigid, “Seph? What… What are you doing here?” Though she had been welcomed the night prior, she had not expected the girl to simply show up and invite herself in. But after taking in her condition and the bloody handkerchief, she did start to soften. That is until her eyes locked onto the gun. Her heartbeat picked up in pace. After a thoughtful hesitation, she stepped into the dining room after Persphone, her gaze sliding immediately to the blonde strewn on a chair that came into view. Her brain quickly flashed her the memory of the smiling young man with the cute little cowlick and butterfly story. “Kazumin…” She recalled aloud. Charlotte folded her arms tightly, her eyes unfocused as she took a step backward. “...What’s going on? …Is he alright?” “ Hai, Candy. Did you know we’re tomatoes?” Responded Kazu deliriously, seeming to have recognized Charlotte even if somewhat. Charlotte raised a brow slowly at him, pursing her lips thoughtfully. She was perplexed to say the least. “...I did not?” Persephone stared at Kazumin in confusion. She had no idea why he was acting so strange, but she was worried. She had been a split second from losing him today and that terrified her. She swallowed and turned her attention to Charlotte. “Charlotte I…” She hadn’t even considered she had just broken into the poor girl’s house. Her vision blurred from watering. “I’m so sorry. I wouldn’t have burst in if it wasn’t an emergency-” She broke off with a wheeze. She needed to catch her air from all the running. The adrenaline was wearing off now and she was more exhausted than she had ever been. Charlotte moved to Persephone’s side with a frown and touched her shoulder. “Maybe you should sit down… I can get you some water.” “He’s barely conscious and he has a pretty bad nose bleed,” △△△ said as he entered the dining room carrying a tray with towels, a bowl, and a pitcher of water. He placed the tray on the table, poured water into the bowl, and dipped a portion of a towel in it. He gave the blonde man a quick glance. “I don’t see any other obvious injuries that could possibly lead to his current state, so unless he’s sustaining internal injuries, has hemophilia, or is hemophobic, I don’t think blood loss is the root cause. But I’m no doctor so I can’t say for sure.” Charlotte’s lips parted open and she stared at Fritz at a loss for words. How did he know we’d need those ahead of time? △△△’s eyes moved to the blonde woman. More specifically, to the bloody handkerchief covering her face. “Are you alright? How are you feeling?” He handed the partially damp towel to her. Persephone had not expected the man with the towels and water to appear out of nowhere. How he had known to bring those items was beyond her. She clenched her jaw and stared at Fritz, guarded. “I’m fine.” She wiped her nose with her own handkerchief and turned to ask Charlotte who he was when another voice interrupted. “The better question is. What in Edin's scraggly beard is going on here? Lottie, why are all of these people in our home? I thought we only invited the doctor… And… and why was there a turkey here?” The bewildered Lorenzo had just come upon the scene after having been woken by the sounds of gunfire, broken glass, and yelling from outside. The duke wanted answers. Charlotte whirled around to look at Lorenzo as he burst into the scene. She wanted answers to the first few questions as well. The last one made her take a deep breath and then pinch the bridge of her nose. The tension and confusion was starting to slowly get to her. After a sigh, she looked at him exasperatedly, “What turkey, Lorenzo? …There is no turkey here.” “ Ooh! It's the jester! Hello, jester! You have a very lovely circus here.” Waving his hand tiredly while giggling, his body now heavily slumped against the chair he sat in.” But where did the pretty rooster go?” “Now it’s a rooster.” Charlotte muttered to herself. “Ahem.” Lorenzo felt as if his other pressing questions had been ignored. So subtly, the man attempted to draw attention back to his concerns Persephone hurried over to Charlotte before she could answer Lorenzo, causing the black-haired woman to take a step back in surprise. It would not be long before guards wanted to search the house and now her father had come down. If she didn’t act soon, they could be kicked out. “Charlotte. Listen to me please. Calbert invited Kazumin over for lunch and I saw him put a gun to Kazumin’s head. I had to distract him so I could save him and now the guards are trying to find us - I’m sorry - It’s just..” Persephone’s voice was hushed for only Charlotte to hear. Tears streamed down her face. “He’s the only family I have. I just didn’t want to lose him… I can’t lose him. Please help us.” “Ahem.” Charlotte stared at her as the girl pleaded with her. The story may have sounded crazy to anyone else, but after the ordeal she experienced with Calbert, it was certainly possible in her eyes. She had recalled that Kazumin had mistakenly upset Crystal at the ball. Knowing the protective father Calbert was, he was bound to have struck at Kazumin. Something must have then gone terribly wrong at the exchange between the two of them. Whatever Persephone had done to rescue him had only escalated the situation and things were at a point of no return. Calbert would accuse Percy of the worst of the worst and get them executed very easily. If Charlotte became involved here, she knew she’d be at the same risk. After some further thought, her expression relented and softened. She put her hands on both of Persephone’s shoulders briefly and offered a small smile. “Alright… Since the assumption is that they’ll try to look here, we’ll have to find a place to hide you two. Leave it to me.” She whispered to Persephone then turned to face Lorenzo. “Ahemmm.” “I’m sorry Lorenzo. I should have told you.” She still wore a smile despite feeling empty. Lying to Lorenzo was the last thing she wanted to do. “I met some friends at the ball and forgot that I invited them over for tea today… It’s been really nice to have company and I may have gotten ahead of myself with the invitations.” She folded her hands behind her back and rubbed her own palm soothingly, “You have the horse race to host soon, right? You may want to have Benjamin take you now so you aren’t tardy…Need to put your best foot forward after everything.” Despite her words of reason, Lorenzo stared into her eyes intently. Perhaps this wasn't the answer he wanted or maybe it just wasn't as convincing as Charlotte thought. “Absolutely! I mustn't be late again! I mustn't indeed. Well, Lottie, ensure you are a grand host to our guests, especially with Count Fritz in your company. Have Delilah take a look at the young man there. He looks very under the weather. He has the look of a drunk but it's much too early for a man so young to be in such a state. And…” Lorenzo's eyes finally stopped on the cloaked and concealed woman. Skepticism slowly creeped through him. “Actually, before I take my leave, could I get some introductions. Be quick with it, I have important matters to attend to.” The cowlicked blonde had his attention on his bloody fingers giggling, barely paying attention to the ongoing tense situation. Hell, he could barely focus and his signature cowlick drooped, lacking its usual springiness as if matching its owner’s bodily state. His attention came back into focus though upon hearing the jester request for introductions. “Ooh! Are we doing audience participation for this show?! I am..um..uh.” Struggling to recall his own name; inside his head the gears sputtered to turn. Persephone faced him and a scowl curled at the tips of her mouth and eyes. It was a gaze only visible to him. Her gaze held a dangerous warning as she moved over to him and patted his head. ”You don’t need to talk. It’s okay.” She took a small container of pudding out of her pocket and handed it to him with a spoon. ”Enjoy.” If that wasn’t a code for shut up, she didn’t know what else she could do. Then he was handed a spoon and the most delicious pudding he was promised. Just like that he forgot what he was going to say, instead being busy nomming on his treat. Persephone slowly turned to face Lorenzo with a neutral expression after he busied himself. Being this close to him made her nervous. Lorenzo wasn’t trustworthy enough for her. If she could have erased his memory or made him leave, she would. Unfortunately, more magic wasn’t an option now and their time was running out. ”I’m Mary and that’s Vincent. He’s hungover from the ball.” The lie left her mouth so quick it made her dizzy despite being used to lying. ”Do have a good day at the horse race, Sir. I trust you’ll do a great job.” Perspehone bowed slightly so as not to remove her hood nor disrupt her bloody nose anymore. Kazu followed suit by giving a wave in a manner similar to a child before going back to his pudding. Persephone sighed in relief when he remained quiet. If she believed in a God, she’d have thanked them. For now, she faced Lorenzo, not wavering in eye contact or body language until the threat was neutralized. In her mind, she was replaying other spells she could use if she had to, but only as a last resort. “I like those names. I knew a Vincent once. He was a very bad chess player. Even I could beat him.” He chuckled lightly. “But...who are you two?” Lorenzo was scratching his head as he tried to recall them from one of the noble families, the girl being more difficult to recognize with the cloak over her. They didn't appear to be affluent, so that made recognizing them ever the more difficult. “Do I know your parents, perhaps?” He looked to Count Fritz, searching for the answer from the man wondering if he knew them. Lorenzo found the count to be a sharp one from his limited interactions with him. But the count was nowhere in sight. Up until a moment ago, he had been tending to “Vincent”: examining the blonde’s body for other potential injuries, washing off blood and stray globs of pudding, and instructing him to pinch his nostrils closed for at least ten minutes. He informed “Vincent” that he was going to get something for him to drink before retreating into the kitchen. An approach by a complete stranger that was met with resistance as the blonde viewed him as a pudding thief at first. He pulled a way and shifted at first; annoyed at being touched by some unknown person, but gave in eventually just to get the man to leave him to enjoy the last of his pudding in peace. Just as the count’s absence registered, something shattered. A squawk, an oof, some rapid beating of wings, and multiple shushes followed the noise. When the count reemerged from the kitchen in a slightly disheveled state, he was carrying the fabled pretty-turkey-chicken-birdy. “I found him!” He announced. The rooster, none too pleased, struggled in the man’s arms with such force that they propelled him forward, dragging him over to the group. They kicked the air in front of Duke Vikena, showing off their spurs. Before they could deal any damage, the count swept the rooster away and tucked them under his arm. He stroked the bird. “Many apologizes, Your Grace. I believe he is just scared.” “Ngh.” Lorenzo had flinched. △△△ turned to the two blondes with the same apologetic expression. “I am so sorry. Can we arrange a meeting for another time? I’d still love a proper tour of the capital.” He tried to reach for his pocket, then abandoned the attempt when the fussy bird let out a low and drawn-out caw. A somewhat glazed and suspicious stare aimed at the unknown individual. Still unsure if the man could be trusted, Kazu’s usual friendly demeanor was replaced with delirious paranoia. Noticing the duke’s gaze, △△△ smiled. “I was told they knew the city very well,” he said as if that was the only bit of information Duke Vikena missed from an ongoing conversation. He did not elaborate, leaving blanks in the story for others—including the duke—to fill. Charlotte stared wordlessly at the rooster in disbelief. There was a lot going on in her head at that moment, but none of it left her brain. After it had seemed Count Fritz was finished speaking, she gradually turned her gaze back on Lorenzo and smiled as if this all made sense. “Beautiful creature, isn’t it?” “It's indeed something of the sort… He stared at the creature for a moment before bouncing back to another matter. The bird could be discounted for now, he didn't have much time to spare. “Uh well, now that everything in here is sorted… Anyone mind letting me know what's going on out there?I thought I heard gunfire and screaming.” He looked from face to face for an answer. △△△’s eyes widened, “Goodness! Gunshots? Is that what that sound was?” He looked down at the rooster, and they looked up at him. “I heard the screams, but I thought it was just you being a menace.” The rooster pecked him. He flinched and turned the rooster around so that their beak faced the opposite direction. “Do you know where the sounds came from?” The count hurried past Duke Vikena to the closest window. Taking advantage of the new position, the bird nipped at the duke once they got near enough to do so, but only succeeded in plucking off a feather that had been stuck on his coat. While the count peeked out the window, the rooster changed their target to the cloaked woman. They tried to kick in “Mary’s” direction as though they had a vendetta to settle with her. They waved their feet around futilely midair until it tired itself out once again. Only astute observers noticed that, during the entire display, the rooster’s beady eyes remained on the duke. Watching. Making sure their performance caught and held his attention. “It seems like the commotion is coming from next door, Your Grace.” △△△ gestured the duke to come over to see for himself. He and the rooster laid out as many props and distractions as they were able to provide. What the others decided to use was up to them. Would the guests flee or would they continue to play “Mary and Vincent”—Lady Vikena’s new friends and Count ◆◆◆◆◆’s tour guides? Or will they go with option three? “I wonder what happened.” Persephone swallowed as she watched the bizarre scenario play out in front of her. She had moved away from the rooster and glared at it with confusion and aggression. Her heart hammered so fast she wondered if it would be audible. Adrenaline coursed through her veins, and an inexcusable exhaustion was waiting to consume her. She glanced at Charlotte while keeping her back to Lorenzo with wide eyes. It wouldn’t be longer until the royal guards came here, and if Lorenzo didn’t leave, they would be screwed. Charlotte and Count Fritz were covering for them but she doubted Lorenzo would. Persephone swallowed and cleared her throat while glancing at the clock, while eying Charlotte inconspicuously. To help keep Kazumin occupied, she pulled out yet another cup of pudding and handed it to him. Kazu could hardly follow anything that was going on though he did find the huge rooster adorable. Any other time he would be trying to chat with and pet the huge bird, but for now was kept satisfied with his pudding. Just when he ran out; another was given to him causing his sleepy face to light up with joy.” Ooh, thankies. Is this because of the bang bangs? Old Calbster was pretty adamant to meet me.” Giving a swishing flick of the spoon as he tried recalling the events, his mind a hazy, jumbled mess.” What was the meeting for again? A party? Oh yeah! Big bangy bang party!” Laughing while doing finger guns twice with his free hand. Persephone turned to Lorenzo with a stressed smile on her face. ”...He had too much to drink. He had some drugs last night because he was having trouble sleeping. He often has delusions of…an interesting nature. Please, don’t mind him.” Charlotte had moved to the window, her eyes following the movement of the guards across the street. She wore an expression of growing concern as her thoughts drifted to Violet and Crystal. “...I hope it’s nothing and no one is hurt…” She glanced at Lorenzo once again,” Once the guards leave, I’ll make sure to go check in on the Damien's. I’m not sure what’s happening but I am really worried.” She had found this question much easier to answer as there was no need to lie. At this point, she still did not have a completely clear view of what exactly had happened and who had been there. “Troubling…” Lorenzo was concerned by how much he still didn't know of the violent commotion that had occurred just outside. However, he was also troubled by what was happening within his own home. Charlotte was possibly the only grounded element in the room. I wouldn't have guessed Count Fritz to be such a peculiar character… His company is quite strange. A large rooster, a hooded girl who's pulling out cups of pudding from gods' know where, and a drugged hungover young man speaking nonsense… The Duke's look of concern morphed into one of uneasiness. “Um… Uh… Ugh… I'm wondering something. Um… how long do you intend on staying in my home?” “I don’t want anyone to be sent outside when it’s possibly dangerous with Vincent’s condition currently. ” Duke Vikena’s palpable unease made △△△ flash a sympathetic smile. Too much was happening so fast. He had no chance to process it all. A short-lived diversion at the expense of the duke’s trust. Every second gave him time to think and the more he thought about it, more questions arose. Questions which stoked his ever-growing anxiety. The group’s unusual behavior did nothing to ease his concerns. Lady Vikena invited friends she never mentioned until now and was trying to get the duke out the door–where “possible danger” awaited–without going through the proper introductions. Did she not want her dear father to become better acquainted with the new friends she made? Especially with how things ended in the past balls the Vikenas participated? “Mary’s” fear and paranoia permeated through the room, putting everyone on edge without her even trying. The picture of a fugitive on the run. “No.” Udo said when Peter recommended her as a potential ally, “she’s already proved herself nsogbu, a liability. Why in Nnenne’s name would we want a thief who always leaves evidence behind? First bread, then blood. Next time she’ll leave something with her name on it. She has more use as a distraction. Have the city focus on hunting her down.” Seeing her now, △△△ wondered if she could evade the authorities for long, without help. The presence of a drugged stranger in one’s house would be enough to make any decent parent worried about their child’s safety. However, it may be more than that for Duke Vikena: perhaps “Vincent’s” drugged state reminded the duke of himself on the days when life was too hard to face sober. A grim reminder of the feelings that followed when the blissful haze lifted and reality hit with a vengeance. High or drunk, the inebriated blonde did not paint the guests in a flattering light. Then there was Count ◆◆◆◆◆ carrying a large rooster for unfathomable reasons. At this rate, Duke Vikena was more likely to report “Mary and Vincent” to the first guards he encountered. But only after careful reconsideration of associating with Count Junglefowl. “It’s terrifying when you don’t know what’s going on.” The statement was directed at no one in particular, yet it addressed everyone in the room. He fell silent, waiting to confirm that the others did not consider honesty to be an option. Though it was not always the best policy, it was a good policy given the right circumstance. “It is.”Charlotte agreed softly. After a thoughtful sigh, she turned to Lorenzo, “I think we should have Benjamin take you east and around. I don’t want you to be at any risk… The guests will only be here a little while longer.” △△△ closed his eyes at her answer. It was the bird who sighed. Now that Kazu had finished his second pudding cup and saw how the tension in the air still refused to abate. The tired blonde let out a small sputtering sigh.* This situation isn’t getting any better so might as well be up to me to clear things up.* Were his thoughts before hopping up onto his feet and right into an appropriate respectful bow to Lorenzo. ”Apologies, my lord. It is clear that this entire situation has become one of pure and utter nonsense, what with us two injured and suspicious-looking blondes and a man holding a giant rooster.” Glancing over to the man and rooster previously mentioned while still in mid-bow. ”Ahem, an explanation is in order and best it be given through truth.” Clearing his throat before carrying on as he stood back up. ”Simply put. An invitation for brunch by count Calbert that has gone horribly awry. Of why, I can not say but it is clear the count is not of sound mind and was determined to bring harm to me until the poor miss and my dear friend over there saw to it to save me. As one can tell by our appearances that while successful; an escape that proved difficult though thanks to our wonderfully kind friend, Charlotte here for offering an invitation last night. It is thanks to such that we have found ourselves here in your lovely home. So I assure we mean no harm and merely seek shelter, at least for the moment…” Stopping to take a breath as if he had more to say. Persephone suppressed the urge to ring his neck and instead, let out a slow, deep breath. She turned to Charlotte as her eyes flashed with aggravation, then slowly turned back to Kazumin. ”You’re talking nonsense to a coat rack. Best go to sleep, pudding boy.” Her body quivered while her vision became blurry and her heartbeat quickened. The change in the air surrounding the blondes caused the feathers on the rooster to bristle, giving the illusion that the bird doubled in size. Underneath the surface, their muscles coiled, ready to spring. Both the rooster and the count prepared themselves. At his companions' words, Kazu’s eyes went cross-eyed as the realization hit him. His whole cool speech proved to be nothing more than him speaking gibberish at said coat rack. Ahhh…well shit. Yeah, I think I’m done. Pudding boy’s last thought before his brain finally shut down and he collapsed to the ground having passed out. Persephone bit her lip in concern, but didn’t comment. She pulled him onto the couch with difficulty, and sighed when his head landed on the sofa. Kazzy … Why are you like this? “Listen, Charlotte.” The Duke straightened up some as he was feeling more and more uncomfortable with the scenario playing out. He noticed the desire for his daughter to have him leave even more so when the dangers of going outside became one thing for the blondes and another thing for himself. “We don't even know what's happening out there. I think it might be best if I have a word with the authorities. If the danger is gone, Benjamin and I can take everyone to Count Fritz's abode… If not then… then maybe it might be best for them to remain here. I don't have much time to dilly-dally so…” Lorenzo started down the hall to head to the front door. “Count Fritz’s abode” or “remain here.” Two options. He suggested only those two options. △△△ swallowed down every lie standing by in his head while the rooster deflated in his arm and began preening. He opened his mouth, but closed it when Lady Vikena spoke. “Maybe Count Fritz and I can speak to the authorities so you don’t have to waste your time?” Charlotte offered. She came over and took his hand as she assured him, “I’ll be okay, Lorenzo. Promise.” “And be left in the dark, wondering what's going on around here. I just want to know what's going on. Count Damien and I have our differences, yes but dear Crystal also lives there. I will risk tardiness at an event for people I don't really care for if it means I'm made aware of the potential dangers to those I love. So Charlotte, please.” He removed his hand from hers and continued to the door. There was a loud knock on the door. Charlotte turned to Persephone and said softly. “You’re going to need to hide. I was hoping to get you all up to my bedroom, but that’s not an option anymore.” Charlotte then moved after Lorenzo and touched his shoulder. Her heart raced as she knew this wasn’t going to go well, but there was no way of hiding it from him now. Persephone jumped at the sound of the knock and stared like a deer in headlights. She grabbed Kazumin under the armpits and glanced around wildly. Tears blinded her eyes. Using magic like she had in front of Calbert and his guards was a death sentence waiting. Her heart beat so fast and loud it sounded as though it was a drumline. She pulled Kazumin roughly off the sofa and groaned in pain. A few unruly words escaped her. She cursed under her breath and dragged him hurriedly towards the cupboard. Once there, she stuffed him inside of it unceremoniously. Persephone rushed back into the dining room and slid under the table quickly while simultaneously wrapping her handkerchief back around her nose . Next, she whispered while touching something inside her pocket: ”Volant.” She floated up to the underside of the table and clung to it like a cat, concentrating with all her might, while staring with terror and anxiety towards the kitchen. Her nose continued to bleed, but she didn’t dare move to fix or tend to it, nor move a muscle. She was prepared to use more magic, however the effects of using two spells in under an hour remained to be seen… “Lorenzo, I’ve been lying. I was hoping to avoid involving you. ” She began softly. “The blonde boy was invited to Calbert’s home and something was misunderstood. You can imagine why. “ She took a shaky breath in between. ” Then the girl felt she had to save him and now Calbert’s sending guards after them. I don’t want them to get caught and possibly executed, especially without knowing the full truth… I know it’s a lot to ask since I’ve just lied to you, but can you please not tell the guards?” Her voice took on a pleading tone that was unusual for her. Lorenzo raised an eyebrow with parted lips, more confused by the scenario than ever. Why is this my life? Lorenzo sighed, dropping his head. Now he wished he didn't know. He should have just minded his business and left. “Well… You trust them? The blondes? And these guards are being sent by Calbert, correct?” Charlotte rubbed her hand anxiously. “Yes they are being sent by Calbert… I don’t know if I should trust those two yet, but I know I don’t trust Calbert.” Another sigh escaped her father before he nodded silently to himself. He had made a decision. All on his own. “Do not fret Lottie… I will fix this. Trust your father and ensure your new friends remain unseen.” Lorenzo's tone was solemn but he wore a brave face. Walking to the door, he took a breath and opened it. “Greetings! Oh, guards… Well what brings you to my estate, and in such numbers? Have I… Have I committed a crime?” Lorenzo was genuinely quite nervous but it helped him play off his act. Persephone clung to the underside of the table. Her hands shook violently and a churning in her stomach told her she would be sick. She glanced towards the foyer and to the kitchen, praying repeatedly that the Duke would keep them safe. There was an entire entourage of guards on his steps. One of them with a well-groomed beard stepped forward. He cleared his throat before declaring, “Good evening Duke Vikena. There were a few criminals on the run spotted in the area. Thus, we would like to search your property to ensure your safety.” “Criminals? In the area? That is pressing. Well, you are free to search my garden, but please do not disturb my tulips. Please, they've been through enough this season.” “... May we search the inside as well?” The man gave a little flimsy wave with his hand as some of the men broke off to move about the perimeter of the house. The sound of footsteps arrived at the doorway of the Vikena house from behind the guards, brushing through them casually, even moving somebody aside with his cane. “Duke Vikena, your entrance into the carriage has been requested. The racing horses shall not wait for thou if thou are unpunctual and horsing around.” It was Benjamin. Lorenzo's face almost lit up at the sight of his peculiar speaking carriage driver. “Benjamin! Yes yes I know. Just a moment my dear friend.” Lorenzo gave him a nod before turning to address the guard in charge of the others. “Searching inside is unnecessary. Do you think I would not know if criminals have infiltrated my home while I've been in it? I respect men of service, but I cannot allow you to go barging into my home while I have guests and especially not with me having to leave for an event sponsored by our king.” He raised his brow matter-of-factly. “Now, the vast garden would be an excellent hideaway. Or do you think it makes more sense for a fleeing criminal to hide inside the neighboring house where Duke Vikena, an officer of the Kingdom rests? Hm?” “... Well I suppose that does make sense. Thank you, Duke Vikena.” The guard gave a polite half-bow then turned on his heels to descend the steps. He cringed after meeting Benjamin’s gaze and began to make haste. “Alright, now it's time to prepare for the race! I will grab my outfit to change into and Kier.” Lorenzo hurried inside at full speed, briskly passing Charlotte without a word, and ran upstairs. A few moments later, Lorenzo appeared, coming down the steps with a partially opened suitcase and Kier clinging to his back “Farewell Charlotte! And absolutely no more guests while I'm out!” He nearly flew through the hall and slammed the front door behind him as he made his exit. “Benjamin! Hurry! I'll change in the carriage!” “Good luck!” Charlotte then exhaled as if she had not done so in years. Back in the dining room, claws tapped against the tiled floor. The large bird strode under the table and fixed its gaze on the shaking figure above with an air of amusement. A different set of footsteps followed soon after, stopping next to the table. Sound of water reached Persephone’s ears. “You may need to work on building a habit of checking your surroundings more often, Miss Mary. It’s… becoming quite concerning.” △△△ slid under the table on his back, facing “Mary” squarely. “Interesting hiding spot.” He looked around to get a better idea of how she was preventing herself from falling, “I’m impressed you have the strength to hold that position.” He removed the bloodied cloth and used a wet towel to wipe the woman’s face. “I’d advise against performing another trick, though. You already looked like you were seconds from fainting before Mr. Vincent beat you to it. I can’t imagine how exhausted you are right now.” A clean handkerchief replaced the old one. “If you’re planning to pass out soon, it’d be best if you list the things you want or need us to do, now.” As the man withdrew his hands, something tugged at Persephone’s clothes. The rooster buried its face into her pocket and was attempting to extract whatever was hidden inside. △△△ gently shooed the rooster away. “Especially if your health condition is of a particular variety.” “ No passing out.” Charlotte interrupted as she moved into the room. Subsequently she began pulling the curtains shut. “ Percy… My father just covered for us. The guards aren’t coming in.” She turned to stare toward Count Fritz and the table. “I want the whole story, Percy. You owe us some honesty here please.”
