Mercy. Life support technician slash hydroponics gardener slash cook slash everything else. [sub]...Nice to meet you.[/sub]” Mercy, the perennially quiet life support technician aboard the Guernica, is a girl far from home. She comes from a rocky, near inhabitable planet within the Vangarian Empire known as X-3817. X-3817 is, coincidentally, home to a solitary, primitivist religious sect of humans known as The Unaltered. Their core tenet, although Mercy would argue with anyone who mentioned it, is that technology, especially used to alter a human being, is the root of all evil. Yup. She’s space Amish. Mercy is a human girl, short in stature, with blue eyes and dyed blue hair. She’s been known to shuffle around the Guernica like some sort of ghost, back hunched and blending into the surrounds with drab, unassuming clothing. She usually has this look in her eye- like she’s always just a bit startled, a rabbit ready to bolt back to its hutch at any moment. Mercy is, unsurprisingly, not a great conversationalist, although many say that she’s pleasant to spend time with and occasionally has something interesting to say.

What do you bring to the table?
“I don’t mean to be prideful, but I do my job and I do it well. Otherwise, I’d be useless, and that’s worse than anything else, isn’t it?” Mercy, with her unique skill set, is often described as one of the few things keeping the crew of the Guernica alive and happy. As such, she’s been christened with the title “life support technician”- a position that really doesn’t exist, but is vague enough to suggest the wide variety of occupations she performs. While she can’t fire a gun or lift a sword or fly a ship or fix a machine, Mercy is uniquely skilled at keeping the atmosphere aboard the Guernica at levels hospitable for a human. She can often be found fiddling with life support systems, and will call the mechanic if she needs assistance. Mercy has also been granted a large space to use for hydroponics gardening, in which she can usually be found tending to green things. She grows food for the crew, of course, but, in the interest of making profits for her captain, grows… other things. Things that wouldn’t be welcome anywhere else but a criminal’s barge. She’s a skilled herbalist and cook, and can be seen in the kitchen at certain times of day. Her soups are legendary.

What's your problem?
“Most people from 3817 never leave. I did.” X-3817, the religious colony Mercy is from, is colloquially known as being absolutely, 100% bizarre. Most will never meet a member of their congregation, as they’re incredibly insular. Most never leave. It’s not that they’re forbidden- they just wouldn’t know how to operate in the modern world. Mercy certainly doesn’t. The Unaltered believe many things, although the most important ones are the subject of the universe’s fascination. One: humans should live free from all robotics. Cybernetic parts and modifications any more advanced than a stationary prosthetic reduce one to something less than human, and any computer attempting to mimic a human is an abomination. All AI is strictly banned on X-3817, as well as most computers. Two: the use of Aura is a sin. Three: humans should live simply. It’s unknown to what extent Mercy adheres to her strange religion, but it’s clear that she has not abandoned her faith completely. She refuses to consume Aura or modify herself in any fashion. But she does not hate or even dislike androids and augmented humans, and has no qualms against using a computer. A crisis of faith and a fervent desire to see the universe made her leave X-3817 behind, possibly forever, and venture into the unknown. So far, she has found the world incredibly disappointing. In a world of AI, Mercy, a naive girl who does not know how to operate a computer or fix a machine, is incredibly obsolete. Before the Guernica, she found herself mostly working as a hydroponics farmer on illegal, illicit projects- a lowly job, one that saw her being treated like less than an animal. For many of these jobs, she was never paid. She found the Guernica a few years ago and quickly made herself indispensable.

Life in the crew
Mercy is utterly bewildered by the rest of the crew, but loves them all the same. She’s quiet and sweet, preferring to stay in her gardens with a mat rolled out or in the kitchen cooking, but her biggest desire is to be helpful. She purposefully takes a very low pay, just so she can stay on the ship for as long as possible. She likes everyone but an obnoxious few and would gladly stay there a while more.
