Even when he agreed with her he had to make it snarky. In some way, Lyra thought this was probably some sort of punishment for her own dryness--she usually had no problem throwing back what she was given, but again, an argument [i]here[/i] was counterproductive and she was [i]trying[/i] to be a team player.
