Due to her circumstances, she is rather skinny and gets sick easily, despite her stomach of iron. The only clothes she has that isn't damaged or dirty in some way is the academy's uniform. Her eyes are a brilliant green, skin pale, and her long hair a light blue with a large section of silver. She keeps a scruffy brown scarf wrapped around her neck and considers it one of her most crucial possessions. Why? Because it's one of the most useful tools she owns. [Personality] Lapis is a young woman who is, admittedly, borderline feral. Her time wandering with no place to call home has kept her in a constant state of survival mode. Will a bandit come and try to rob her blind? Will she go to sleep hungry for the third time in a row? Will she wake up and realize a wild animal has ruined her remaining clothes? Because of this, Lapis has her quirks that others would find very strange or what nobles find “beastly”. For instance, she doesn't care where the food comes from, just if it’s edible. She is incredibly frugal with whatever money she has and tends to be protective of anything she cares about. Lapis is also used to owning only essentials, which means her receiving a gift of any kind would have her feel she owed the person a favor. She will try to figure out what that favor is in order to make things even. Aside from this, she is kind with a calm disposition and a love of books and stories. It helps take her mind off her harsh reality for a few hours and allows her to follow the footsteps of someone who will amount to greater things. Lapis also has an air of playful sarcasm to her and is a bit “eccentric” in some ways. Her time homeless has also nurtured a distaste for nobles as they tend to think they’re better than her (they always make sure to let her know this too). Lapis likes to give people nicknames to help her remember them, and she is very perceptive of any people she meets. She has to be, or she would risk being robbed or killed. TLDR: -Borderline Feral -Trust Issues -Food is food and I will eat -Frugal -Protective -Receiving gifts makes her feel she owes them a favor -Calm disposition -Playfully sarcastic -Eccentric -Dislikes Nobles -Nickname giver -Perceptive, good at reading people and their intentions [Personal History]
Misfortune constantly followed Lapis ever since she was young. She was born to a young nobleman and his maid who were eager to get rid of her. It was a simple night of rendezvous that shouldn’t have led to Lapis, but it did. His parents were not so keen of keeping a child their son had with “the help” and said son wasn’t so keen on keeping a daughter that didn’t even have a Crest. So, they abandoned her at the doorstep of the Church in the hopes that they would care for the baby, which they did. Lapis grew older within the Church, studying the God Yhirel and quickly proved to be an excellent student of Faith. However, the Church itself was small and underfunded. It seemed to be a popular location for runaway children, abandoned babies, and innocent people seeking refuge. Since the Priest did not want to turn his back on them, he welcomed every single one with a smile. This led to food shortages and stress, but they were pulling through as best as they could. One day when she was 11 years old, the leader of Minor House Zuval came to the Church and spoke to the Priest privately. He had a proposition. He wanted to adopt a child from the Church, and to show he was full of nothing but good intentions, he would donate 100,000 gold to help their cause. The Priest hoped Yhirel would understand that the loss of one child from the Church would drastically help the others that sought his aid. The nobleman was granted permission, and the questioning began. He would smile and ask the children questions. He encouraged them to show him their prowess in magic and their knowledge of Yhirel. His attention landed on Lapis, who not only looked familiar, but expressed immense talent. He chose her and kept his promise of donating the large sum of funds to the Church. Lapis overheard this and felt a sense of betrayal. The Church had sold her, didn’t they? Is that what adoption meant? Regardless, she packed her belongings and went with the Zuval nobleman to his home, where to her surprise, were more children. The children were immensely welcoming of Lapis and she quickly made friends with them. For the next year, the children were pampered and given hearty meals. It was the greatest year of Lapis’s life… Though that quickly came to a close when her adoptive father made an announcement. The man’s name was Gabriel Zuval, and he made his plans for them clear. He was in search of an heir to the Zuval noblehouse, and unfortunately, he couldn’t have children of his own. So he adopted children that showed immense talent in the hopes that one of them would be able to bring power to the Zuval name. Unfortunately for them, he only had plans for one heir. That one heir would keep the house, the money, and all the luxuries that he’s granted them so far. The rest would be tossed back to whatever slums or dump he picked them up from. Do with this information what they wished, but he expected progress. He’d have no problem kicking them all out if it came to it. With that, the wonderful friendship Lapis shared with her adoptive siblings quickly turned to bitter rivalry. There was no more play time. No more fun. And no more love between them. Lapis had to pour herself over tomes and studied Reason magic religiously. She, like everyone else, had the help of tutors to assist in her education. She studied and trained hard. The motivation was prevalent, and she learned quickly. One by one, children started disappearing from the noblehouse. There was only one or two who had been adopted by a Zuval branch house, but the rest, she wasn't sure what happened to them. All she knew was they didn’t make the cut. And unfortunately, she was the seventh of nine children to be released from the home. She was to be placed in another Minor Noble house as their bargaining chip for arranged marriage deals, but Lapis had other plans. Lapis, while being transported, managed to slip away and escape her fate. It left her with a very small amount of money and the clothes on her back, but with the hope that the Church she was adopted from would take her back in, she persevered. Imagine her heartbreak when she discovered that the Church had been ransacked and abandoned. Now with nowhere to go, Lapis was left to wander for the next seven years. She could have gone to another Church and hoped they took her in again, but what if what happened before happened again? Lapis couldn't deal with that. She wanted to live as peacefully as this lifestyle could offer her. During her time on the streets, Lapis claimed that her parents were working within the Church and she was selling her singing or storytelling for coin in the hopes of repaying them for their kindness. It worked in some areas, and didn't for others. Lapis quickly learned just how grueling and miserable being a drifter was. Bandits, basic needs, and seeking shelter were all constantly on her mind. She had to defend herself with magic and whatever impromptu weapon she had often. Sometimes she'd wake up and find all of her stuff gone, or she'd find herself starving with not enough money to pay for food. But she remained hopeful. Luck seemed to shine on her when she came across a Church who'd suffered from a bandit attack. Lapis assisted with healing, and when the brutes came back to finish the job, she assisted in holding them back long enough for the knights to come run them off. The head of the Church, who was called Mother Matilda, thanked Lapis and Yhirel that she showed up when she did. Had Lapis walked away, Matilda feared that the remaining sons and daughters of Yhirel may not be alive right now. She welcomed Lapis inside for a meal and at least a new set of clothing. Lapis, though hesitant, was easily won over at the sight of freshly cooked meat. So of course she would stay! Mother Matilda kindly asked that Lapis stay to hone her magic abilities. She recognized that Lapis's healing abilities were quite strong for the level she was at now, but she needed a little guidance. Lapis said that if there was more meat and a place to bathe, she was happy to stay. There, Lapis's abilities grew stronger and Matilda was impressed. She saw a lot of potential in this one, as did the nuns and monks of the Church. They heard Lapis's story and knew that Yhirel must have guided her here for a chance to become what she could be. Lapis had been planning her departure when Matilda stopped her with a proposition. A sponsorship to The Officer's Academy, where she could hone her talents and become something wonderful. After seeing her bravery and prowess, they believed she was capable of something more than drifting around. Lapis would have been an idiot to say no.
