I prefer to root it in Canon and be careful about what legends stuff gets let in. 

But I am open to bad guys, with the understanding that there's a bad guy at the top of them all pulling the strings and of course we haven't revealed that bad guy yet. I wouldn't get too attached to antagonists, and we sort of mark the protagonists that can be iced as well with no big deal to the writer.
