Or camping. But here she was doing just that. Sitting with a handful of other students as they were trying to get their sleeping situation set. For some reason or another, she didn’t complain; an oddity considering the fact that Lakisha was a talker. She’d do things, but usually there’d be a word in if she felt it was stupid or pointless. It was hard to put a finger on, though she didn’t think much of it. A large part of that was easily explained in one sentence: she hadn’t really had the time to process it. And by it, it meant the whole university and all of its very esoteric ideas about house assignments, team building disguised as nature retreats, and all of the elements of the school that gave her red flags. But the P.R.C.U. was the best chance she had to have a life after high school. What could she really complain about and not seem like an entitled bitch? As she walked around, arms crossed taking in the scenery that was all she could think about. This was the first time she had been away from Windsor, ever, and she hadn’t been able to have a moment to herself since she arrived. Not for long enough. She tapped her right foot against the ground. ‘Not now.’ she told herself. ‘Plenty of time for that later.’ She took a breath, her eyes moving back to camp where it appeared the food situation was getting handled. Truthfully, she wasn’t too hungry. Ever since her hype-gene manifested it seemed like the only way she could feel tired was exerting herself, and only by exerting herself did she feel the need to eat more. Comic books depicted speedsters as people who were always hungry, which Kisha realized was basically true. Exerting herself on a run led to her losing energy and the only way to replenish was to rest and eat or rest and sleep. Given she had been stuck hiking, she hadn’t really exerted herself. To feel hungry or tired would require running. It was one of many reasons why she had not slept a wink on the plane flight across the country to get to the island the campus called home. She thought about the tents. Would she get any sleep at all tonight? Probably not. Not without a run. She moved back toward the camp, figuring she could eat a little. By the time she reached the collection of personal pizzas she heard another student talk about not eating the ham. “You a vegan?” she asked, without considering her tone, “Burning?”
