Kevin's mother, Ms. Wu, was a beautiful woman, and she knew it. Like a butterfly, she danced between men in the high society of Hong Kong, ones she could gain favors from. She never prostituted herself, of course. Selling oneself for a set price was below her. It all ended when she fell in love with a certain married man and intentionally bore his child. Her true love couldn't and wouldn't ruin his marriage, being a political one in nature, and she knew that as well. So, she picked one of her other suitors, also well-to-do and powerful, to settle with. Of course, she lied about the father of her child.

The man, Kevin's non-biological father, thought what they had was true love, but he grew suspicious after a hospital visit when Kevin was 3 years old. Upon DNA testing, the cat was out of the bag. Within a year, the divorce proceedings went through, and the mother and son were exiled to America. Kevin was also stripped of the man's last name and now bore his mother's.

The man was generous enough to leave the two of them a decent sum, but Ms. Wu was used to the high life, and it wasn't long before their fund ran low. Ms. Wu obviously resorted back to her old ways, but she was growing old and had a child. She eventually had to become the very prostitute she once looked down upon.

Kevin grew up watching different men come and go in their home. He was taught by Ms. Wu how to use beauty and sexuality as a weapon. He was taught the importance of money and power, which he could only obtain through other people. He was also taught how to endure pain, mental and physical, as she took out all her anger and frustrations on him. Not to mention, the particularly depraved would ask him to take part in Ms. Wu's work as well. Of course, Ms. Wu was all about appearances if nothing else, so her customers weren't allowed to go all the way with Kevin and marks were left only in areas unseen by outsiders. The most useful skill she taught him was how to hide and deceive. 

Living in such an oppressive environment, Kevin had considered seeking help, but Ms. Wu had scared and guilted him into never taking action. It was only after her death when he was 14, that he was finally freed. Well, "freed" would not be the right word, since her teachings had already been etched into his very being.

Social services had let him finish middle school where he was (he wasn't very affected by Ms. Wu's death), but when it came to high school, they wanted to relocate him. Their plan was originally planned to put him in another school. Once Kevin overheard about Edgebaston, where a lot of rich kids were attending, though, he worked the charm that Ms. Wu had trained and landed himself where he wanted.

At Edgebaston, he fabricated a whole new backstory and personality, hoping to get into the "right crowd" and maybe attract the attention of one or two rich boys. His sexuality stemmed from his loathing of Ms. Wu -- despite not hating all women, he would feel nauseated thinking about them in a sexual manner.

He managed to get himself a job at the sketchy gay bar the summer before high school started, to finance his fabricated lifestyle. He was only a waiter for the first 2 years, but becoming a performer meant more hourly pay and the chance of getting requested for "outings". So, this summer, he trained under a current performer, and was now a drag stripper.
