In simple terms: A complete and utter weirdo. In a town that will judge you without hesitation, the Kaines are a family that have found themselves in their own little bubble, and because of their eccentric tendencies no one really fucks with them. The Kaines have always been around, just like the well known Scott Street royalty, but instead of wearing their history like a medal of honor -- their family, at least to public records, were part of the workforce of the Liberty Tobacco Factory, previously a match factory -- Arthur Kaine built his own legacy. This legacy being known as Swerve Arcana. In truth, if one actually asked the patriarch of the Kaine family about the Kaine history, they would find out their ancestor, Sarah McKinley, led one of the biggest workers' strikes by women for women, which improved working conditions for the Match factory. A "little match girl" turned the Boston work environment upside down as a whistleblower that uncovered the phosphorous being handled was unsafe, infecting and killing all those that took in the dust and vapors. Meaning all her coworkers. During this time, a humble journalist, Harold Kaine, son of publisher giant at the time, Thurman Kaine, found her endearing and saw the power of the little people through her boldness. He offered a proposition, which would allow her protection from people who mean her harm, especially that of his father. His father wasn't against such a proposal of marriage because he believed this would get the girl to shut up. This led to a series of events where the Kaine family went into financial ruin and the last ones standing were Thurman and Sarah. From there, they kept a low profile and worked simple jobs, Sarah returning to the factory, until it eventually led to the Kaines we know today. Arthur Kaine found love with his aloof next door neighbor, Zella Little. The Littles had moved from Portland, Oregon, out of a whim, when Zella was only five. Like other love stories that happen throughout Edenridge history, they moved right next to the Kaines, which allowed Arthur and Zella the time and space to always be near each other, falling head over heels for one another. She, like him, didn't really care what people thought of her. It did lead to them getting bullied, but together they survived these trials and even made friends with people like John Callahan. Arthur's dad at the time simply owned a convenience store, Whistle Stop, but after his passing, the business changed into something else. With the Littles help, he was able to make something based purely on his nerdy interests, ie. comics. The Littles are a quiet family, that keep to themselves, and indulge in commission work for the town, like painting murals. They live a life where they basically do what they want, like glassblowing, and sell their items at the local market and online. A family clearly with money, but keep that fact to themselves, not wanting to be seen like those that live on Scott Street. Arthur, however, has no more living family aside for his own. If his name dies with him, he is okay with that because at least he was able to build Swerve Arcana and he knows that at least one of his daughters would continue to build on top of his legacy, a small piece of heaven filled with hope and escapism. He understands what it feels like to be different and he wanted a welcoming place for those who were just like him. Little weirdos. The daughter that clearly grabbed onto the mantle was his youngest, Avery Kaine, since his eldest, Zarissa, grew up unlike the rest of her family, and perhaps that is her way of wanting to stand out. She was surrounded by color and wanted a life more in black and white. And that was okay. She was the smartest one out of them all and he would encourage whatever pursuit she saw fit, if that meant she would be happy. For her, that happiness rooted in examining evidence to help solve the many cases of their town. He did wonder if being surrounded by fantasy constantly was the reason she chose such a real career path. Regardless, he would continue to be proud of her, just like he was proud of his Avery. Avery Kaine, unlike her sister, was content with her environment. Growing up surrounded by comics and games? What more could you ask for. In preschool, when she was drawing unicorns, she would find herself looking outside at the Elite playing kickball and ask questions a child wouldn't usually ask. It wasn't until a sweaty boy with big, fluffy hair and a dumb goofy grin probed about her art and asked if she wanted to go play with them. That was the defining moment of why a weirdo was never really judged, or bulled, because as long as she had Clayton Costigan as a friend, no one would touch her. It helped that their mothers were friends, seeing how her mom was the art teacher and his mom was a painter. When he wasn't with his crew, he would find comfort with her to just be himself and drop all expectations to be stupid. Together, they were stupid but that was simply how their dynamic was and always will be. Dumb, fun and full of love. Because of her friendship with Clay, Avery found herself drawn to the Coach's daughter, Jamie O'Hara. She and Laura Costigan were usually always together. The honorary Elite members since they were sisters to the core boys, just like Caitlin Cleary was. Caitlin, however, had a little age gap between the rest of them, so she would always be seen as THE little sister, which likely impacted her relations with the rest of them. The sisters naturally gravitated to their brothers and that whole crew were in the light. They were the sun, popular and with all the power in the world because of their lineage, and Avery Kaine was on the ground looking up at them. Jamie, like Clay, saw her though and showed her so much kindness that Avery couldn't help but think about her day in and day out. This crush led to a feverish longing but because of fear of taking a risk and ruining what they have, Aves decided to simply stay still and watch from afar, rooting for her Unicorn's happiness instead of chasing it and giving her a stable, loving home. With the events that have transpired recently due to the letters of the infamous Charlie Decker, life has been... moving for Avery Kaine. With her best friend a part of the police force, she gets to learn about more things than not of the secrets of Edenridge. In addition to that, there has been a surprising development with her Dream Girl which is forcing Avery to stop reading stories but instead live her own. Who knows what's to happen next but for the first time in her life, Avery is excited and willing to take a chance. She just hopes someone would be there for her, like she's been there for everyone else, if she's in over her head...
