“GIVE ME” “I’m HUNGRY!” said Ratty in its language which Penumbra completely ignored. They understood very well what Ratty wanted and learned.

“[color=gray]You’re a hungry creature, aren’t you? Hungry even if you just ate. You might be smarter than you look. Very well, let’s try something else. If you do it, you’ll get a treat. If you don’t, well, you’re going to [i]starve[/i] and we’ll try again in a few hours. [/color]” said Penumbra with their many voices. 

Ratty returned the favour and clearly didn’t understand them back but still continued to beg on his two hind legs. Asking for more and more food.

Penumbra cut a few more pieces of themselves and showed them to Ratty, just outside his reach which made Ratty get very excited making sounds and pushing against the bars, then Penumbra threw inside the cage a tiny plank of strong wood. Ratty went straight away to it and after a few seconds of intense smelling, he shook his head and went to beg for more treats. 

“[color=gray]Bite. Ratty. Bite it and you’ll get treats. Don’t and you won’t. [/color]”  said Penumbra in a stern tone as they pointed at the wood. They kept doing that for hours at a row, hoping Ratty would learn one of two things. Either he’ll learn to attack on command or his teeth would get strong enough to break through. In the end, it didn’t matter. Ratty had to be taught. He had to transform and the only way to do that was for him to learn all the important commands.

Penumbra sets themselves a new goal - get Ratty to transform into a Giant Rat that can either change shapes at will, change their natural element or swap between solid and liquid form. and that has very strong teeth which is a more close and achievable goal.
