He has rarely taken action off of his own volition having always been told what to do, led around like a dog. Sure, there were times where he was let off leash but still, he had been given a goal and a purpose. Even when it comes to his religion, he seemingly cannot take a step unless it is the will of the Loa. Perhaps his mother was right and he truly was born with no soul, no fire in him, or perhaps it was her who placed the curse upon him. Regardless, it was easy for him to be this way being a part of the Voodoo Boys. Between Maman Bridgette and Placide, orders never ran dry, well, until V came along. With their leaders now dead and the Animals tearing apart Pacifica, his Grandmother urged him to flee, to save what little he had left. Now without the gang, he’s having to think for himself for the first time but struggles as it’s a frustrating affair. He’s turned to short term medication, spending what little they have on booze and drugs. F L A W : Apathy: As a child, JV learned from his mother that he was cursed with no soul and that atonement would only be found in fulfilling the needs of the Loa. As such, he is apathetic towards his actions. Good or evil, he has done whatever is asked of him. F L A W : Self-Destructive: "Never have I dealt with anything more difficult than my own lost soul." V I R T U E : Loyalty: JV is loyal to the Loa and his family, what’s left of them at least. V I R T U E : Modesty: Not all of his actions are negative, though even the good ones are not done by him but by "The will of the Bondye." Humanity's twisted treatment of mother nature had stirred her into fighting back. The small island nation was battered by a series of horrific storms, with many refugees fleeing to the states. In modern times, the majority of the Caribbean has been lost to the sea along with the lives of anyone who had dared stayed. Bundled into a leaky dinghy, in the darkest hour of the night, JV could never remember why they left Haiti. Sure, there were the storms but something had occurred, a tipping point between his parents. His father, only referred to as 'the Pagan' by his mother, was nowhere to be seen at the time, leaving the two to island hop around the Caribbean and Central America for the next 3 years. Though never revealing why they left, his mother only ever told him that it was because JV was cursed. A child, born with no soul, incapable of being anything other than a pit of emptiness was used by his mother to get across the border in hope of a better life. Left like garbage on the other side, she abandoned the child on the steps of the Voodoo Boy Church. "The Loa are the only ones who can grant you salvation, boy." Were some of her last words to him, leaving an ever lasting imprint on him. Raised in an orphanage by Maman Nadège, JV grew up as an outcast among his own kind. Orphans, in lieu of their own family, tended to band together, becoming brothers and sisters bound by circumstance. Such was not the case for Jean-Vallet. He would oftentimes be caught doing nothing but sitting on his bed, staring out the window. Those around had heard the rumours, that he had been born with no soul, so most were happy to stay clear. Not Maman Nadège though. A tough but fair woman, she pushed JV forward in childhood and adolescence, finding the young man responded well to direct guidance. He spent most of his time running errands either for her or small things for the Voodoo Boys. As puberty hit, JV shot up in size and stature, quickly daunting most around him. Maman Nadège pushed him into the gym where he took up boxing and weight training. It was there the woman finally saw a spark of personality with the young man taking to the sport like a moth to a flame. Soon he was a local champ, fighting in rings across Night City and even making a name for himself among the amateur world of boxing. It was during this time he met and impressed Oshun, a beautiful local woman. The two quickly fell in love and the boy's grandmother was happy to see the young woman bring him even further out of his shell. The two wed only a few years after knowing each other. Boxing didn’t last though, the gang had needs that trumped training and even matches, meaning JV could never qualify professionally and eventually had to give it up. Things became worse after the birth of his son, Oshun was diagnosed with breast cancer, a curable disease in the modern age for those who could afford it. JV couldn’t and despite his hard work for the gang, they never rewarded him well financially. The cancer spread to her lungs and Jean-Vallet could do nothing but watch the love of his life waste away. With her death, any semblance of personality faded as the man became nothing more than a grunt in the gang. Care of his now 3 year old son fell to Maman Nadège, who, as always, took pity on JV. The final straw came when the Voodoo Boys attempted to use V to achieve their goals of godhood. Like Icarus, the gang flew too close to the sun and were killed when V let loose in their base of operations. JV didn’t even see the famed solo coming his way, a system reset left the man writhing on the floor and the merc vanished without a trace. He was lucky, V killed most of the others but the gang was now crippled. Taking advantage of their long time rival, the Animals swooped in and waged war. It was a vicious and bloody fight but even in the chaos and carnage, Maman Nadège managed to convince JV to flee for the sake of his son and the memory of his wife. Doing so, the man took his grandmother and boy renting an apartment in downtown Heywood. Having lost almost everything, JV now spends his time and ennies on booze and drugs, for what is he but a man cursed with no soul? It is on one of these nights where he slipped out of his apartment to head to the groceries where he was set upon by Scavs. Drunk and high, he is still able to fight off a few of them but is eventually overpowered. She is associated with beauty and love with her followers often leaving offerings to her at river beds. Oshun Sanon, JV’s deceased wife has melded with an image of the Goddess. It’s been so long he’s not sure which statement is true, does the God resemble his wife? Or does his wife resemble the God? Whatever the case may be, she's his opposite, full of energy, love and wisdom. She advises on the will of Bondye, God of all and is constantly out for JV to embrace her.
