If you would mention her name in any town or village it would not ring any bells. They would tell you they know a lot of Smiths and none of those Smiths have any connection to Katelyn. Yet she somehow stormed the scene to become a notorious outlaw.

Kate would go into saloons to pick fights with established gunslingers only to beat them in the duels. She would chase after dangerous bounties that other, more experienced bounty hunters might think twice about and yet somehow she managed to succeed. Every action the girl seemed to have taken was to build up her skills and fame.She would eventually become known as Swift Hands Kate for her godlike drawing speed.

It took Katelyn some years to build up the notoriety required to attract the people for her one true objective. The retrieval of former Emperor Augustus’s lost gold. Many have searched for it, no one was ever able to find it. Some would say the gold does not exist. That it is just  a legend from the civil war. However, Kate knows better as she is in possession of Hadrian Augustus’s diary detailing a part of his journey through the desert and how to find the next part.

However, the Kharakhi desert is a dangerous place and it is ill advised to travel there alone. If you are ill experienced in navigating and surviving the place, going there is a death trap. Even when you know what you are doing, then there are still many dangers that might kill you. Going alone is a good way to die. That is why Katelyn is recruiting a gang of outlaws. For hundreds of years the emperors of Iridia have ruled the empire with their iron fists and expanded the borders in all directions. Many of the emperors had been great politicians who understood statecraft, however that was not the case with Hadrian Augustus, the last Emperor.

Hadrian came to power when his father died in 1829. He was the only child of Felix Augustus, his progenitor. Where Felix was a smart and capable statesman, his son was the opposite. He preferred to throw lavish parties and was more concerned with his image than with affairs of the state. Under Hadrian’s rule, the economy declined, poverty rose and the court increased taxes to fund a new preposterous palace. It only took Hadrian 5 years to drive the empire into the ground.

Fed up by the mismanagement of the court, the ever increasing taxes and the absolute disconnect between the emperor and the  rest of society, a group of powerful industrial elites plotted a rebellion. Riding on a broad wave of discontent, many of the commoners and military joined hands to overthrow the Emperor and create a new Iridian Republic ruled by elected officials with a president as head of state.

However Emperor Hadrian decided that he would not go down without a fight. He assembled what loyal military he had left and ordered them to march on the stronghold of the Republicans. The battle was short and deadly. It ended in a decisive defeat for the imperial faction.  Running out of options to thwart the rebellion, he grabbed the state's coffers and made a run  for the kingdom of Adaigo.  

He formed a party consisting of his wife Adriana, his then 20 year old daughter Aurora, some retainers and around 30 men of his personal guard. Rumors say he took at least 2.5 million imperial gold coins and numerous other treasures with him as he left the capital. In today's Republican dollars, that would amount to something around 25 million. A huge fortune. With access to the sea cut off, his only option to reach Adaigo was to travel south through the Kharakhi desert. An inhospitable and hard to travel place. It is unclear where Hadrian and his party entered the desert but well known that they never made it to Adaigo. It is assumed that they all perished in the Kharakhi desert and that the gold is still somewhere waiting to be found.

[h3][b][i][color=FFD700][center]The Iridian Republic[/center][/color][/i][/b][/h3]
The Iridian republic was founded 1834 as the successor state to the Empire with the disposal of Emperor Hadrian Augustus. Under the emperors the country slowly expanded from north to south, creating a frontier region at the outskirts of the Kharakhi desert. In the frontier it is not really clear where the republic ends. Most of the towns and villages in this area are predominantly self governed and some are even unknown to the republican government. They mostly live and operate by Iridian law but if no government official comes to collect the tax they would not notify anyone.

The north and east coast is mostly urbanized and industrialized. Here the Republican rule is the strongest while the southern lands near the Kharakhi desert mostly consist of small towns, farming communities and ranches. Due to the climate cattle herding is one of the main agrarian enterprises in this region.

The border region between the Kharaki desert and the Iridian republic is formed primarily by the Kharakhi mountain range that runs from east to west across the continent. Together with  the great north-south mountain range these mountains effectively block most rainfall coming in from the sea.

With the start of the Republican era many migrants have arrived from all across the world and settled into the Republic. Many stayed in the larger cities up north to work in the factories but others went south to acquire lands for cattle herding and created new communities in the borderlands. Two of the larger settlements in the border region are Christiana town and New Hope.[/hider]
