His blessings are always burdens, and his presence is agony to withstand. No being born of Itzal's word lives its life without terrible suffering and vexation, be it of the body or the spirit. Misfortunes are his footprints, and black spells are his art. Recurring nightmares are a tell-tale mark of his attention. No weapon forged in Itzal's name is swung without piercing the skin of its wielder. He is wise in the ways of ill speech and ill hearts, and listens always to the sound of hateful magic on the winds of time, no matter where it may be called, or who its caller.
Description
Itzala- the Itzala, or Itzal in direct speech- asks neither permission nor forgiveness for his existence. He shoulders no timeless duty towards creation or its inhabitants. The god of hatefulness, he does not hate; the god of pain, he does not suffer. Itzal basks in his own power, delighting in mercy that is abundantly his to give. By willingly turning his evil eye away from life, he reaps praise and adoration without raising his voice or lifting his hand. All the world is play to Him, whose work is simply to remind its people of who He is. There are some benefits to Itzal's presence. He is a generous giver of weapons and magical arts, and his greatest curses are clever, spawning strength and clarity of purpose. That's not the point of the curses, of course. They are simply within his nature to give. But he does seem to enjoy blessing the world in this back-handed kind of way. It doesn't make amends for the great agony that Itzal radiates into the world- how he laughs at this! But it does please him to see his own power at work in strange ways. Itzal inhabits the Sun, or- in some horrible way that only nightmares hint towards- is the Sun. He manifests as shadows, ghosts, and the gazing Evil Eye at the corner of mortal awareness. Most of all he is fond of possession. Itzal puppets his favourite mortals like dolls, seizing their bodies in a moment of sunstroke or fever-dream and carrying out his will through their aching bleeding hands. His victims are often delirious and confused, especially at first, but always remain sane, even to the very end. Itzal has no unique love or hatred towards other gods. They are his peers and colleagues, brothers even, the shapers of his subjects, and the greatest witness to his terrible might. He cares little if his curses are undone by them- it's even a kind of honour to have won their acknowledgement in such a way. He enters alliances freely, and leaves them as it suits him.
O Sun who burns, we turn our eyes away from thine. May thy glory and thy power remain forever hidden. Untitled sun art by Doomed Sarcoma.
