Since the dissolving of the colleges and guilds of magic four centuries back the arcane arts have been declared heresy against the Word of The Creator. Those who practice or study magic or take magical items and texts for themselves - regardless of intent - are declared apostates and are judged as such. Yet despite the many decades of zealous efforts by the Prelacy and their knightly orders magical practice continues to exist, the arcane arts never truly dying out. Druids, elementalists, enchanters, necromancers, and of course blood mages continue to walk the earth always vigilant for the militants of the cathedrals and their cronies. One blood mage in particular has long been hunted by the Templar Knights and the Inquisition. Having achieved immortality, an affront to the divine powers of the Creator Himself, for passing generations has this man fled the wrath of the clergy. When he is finally found he is slain by the Knights Templar who then destroy his lifetime of research and torch his estate. Only his two young apprentices manage to escape and barely so. On their own and with the Templars and Inquisition at their heels these two apprentices must take all that their master taught them and choose how to employ this knowledge. Wether they seek bloody revenge or to merely take up their masters’ legacy and transcend mortality is to be seen. Their lives will only grow more difficult and these two must choose what path they will follow in the hard and grim journey ahead. While at first they are fleeing persecution they come to see that they hold the key to limitless power, and they must decide how to use it. Your upbringing in Leaxstead led you to learn the skills of the common folk; fishing, trapping, and the tending of animals mostly. When you came of an appropriate age your father taught you how to use a sword and a bow alike. He taught you about the import of diligence, commitment, family, integrity, and honor. Whether these lessons meant anything of course was up to you in the end. Though you were not his own blood the kindly captain did all he could for you, intent to give you the chance at a future you otherwise would not have had. Now this humble reality has come to a devastating end. When a raving, wild-eyed man comes charging from the woods into town screaming of a great black dragon in the sky you and all the townsfolk immediately look upon him as a jittery fool. “A dragon? There have been no dragons in Brevonnia for generations!” they all said. But as a thundering roar tears through the sky and a horrific shadow covers the sun grumbling and laughter turn to screams of terror as fire rains from above onto the innocent folk of Leaxstead. As the wyrm destroys all you know you and Lynet are left to your own with only your learned skills and raw wit to guide you in a cold world. My partner and I will respectively role as the adopted child of the captain and his blood daughter, Lynet. After witnessing the savage destruction of their home by a dragon - beasts long thought to have been driven from the realm - this young pair are lockstepped into a perilous quest to help save the kingdom from an ancient evil. What part will they, two simple folk of a small town, play in the coming days in what is something beyond commoners and kings? Despite this layer of stochastity and improbity, or perhaps because of it, Tescalia has always attracted those seeking wealth and power like moths drawn to flame. As one can expect, of course, not all who seek their fortunes in Tescalia mean to do it through noble or legitimate action. Thieves and assassins are as common in Tescalia as merchants and would-be heroes. It is a warm midsummer eve, a ship comes gliding into the port just making it to harbor as the sun dips down over the western horizon. After a long voyage from Alesia the men of the ship are eager to return to land and stretch their legs and spend their hard-earned coin. Among those departing for shore are a pair of well-armed individuals newly arrived in the Fickle Port. It is late and the pair, uninterested in spending another night on a rocking vessel, decide to head for the nearest inn. But only fools walk so openly in the night in Tescalia and this lesson is to be learned harshly. As the two turn a corner together they are waylaid by an armed band, robbed of all they have and left for dead in the street. Just as the darkness begins to envelop the unfortunate arrivals they are hoisted from the cobblestone and taken to the nearest clinic. After recovering from their wounds the two travelers will come to discover that crime has surged in Tescalia due to the appearance of some new criminal organization unlike any seen before. The attack on them just one in a string of more violent crimes that have plagued the city in recent weeks. Having lost all their belongings and coin, and very nearly their lives, the new arrivals have no choice but to set out after the thieves. My partner and I will of course take up the mantle of these two victims as they look to reclaim what was theirs and settle the score with their attackers - along the way uncovering the truth about this new group of cutthroats and a greater conspiracy at hand that threatens not just Tescalia but the entire region. As peddlers and bright-eyed travelers flock to the streets by day brigands and footpads skulk in the shadows by night - all beneath the towering presence of the cities’ great stone walls and the wealthy estates of the nobility and merchants. But there are those that look upon the city with a pulsating greed that reaches beyond stolen goods and chests of gold, they see Shanjing itself as the true grand prize that they might take for themselves. While these shadowy forces are at work so are the city guard and of course the Free Wardens, sworn protectors of the Empire and heroes of renown across the realm. The game is afoot, the fate of Shanjing hangs in the balance as heroes and villains draw their blades in contention. And in the midst of this bloody feud will come forth two unique but humble travelers that will be forced to choose a side - be they hero or villain? Based in the world of [i]A Thousand Legends[/i], this RP is set in the city of Shanjing along the southern coast of the Eternal Empire. My partner and I will role as a pair of travelers who have recently arrived in the city seeking something or the other - maybe new employment, perhaps greater fortunes, or maybe just a fresh start with their life. These travelers will inevitably be swept up in a course of events plaguing the city, all surrounding a growing conflict between the city authority and a cryptic league of fiends and criminals with an unknown goal. They can go their separate ways or join forces in restoring the old order or usher forth a kind of new order in the city of Shanjing - be it for the sake of morals or personal gain. They will make friends and foes aplenty in their pursuit and it is sure to be a tale of blood and honor - or dishonor. The calling horns are blown, Jarl Ivarr Hakonsen musters a grand army of over a thousand strong warriors and they sail west for Brevonnia - an island realm of wealthy cities, fertile fields, and a weak people easily set upon. Despite the warnings of the seeresses Ivarr and his fellows set out, eyes gleaming with thoughts of conquest and plunder. Alas the words of the oracles were not to be disregarded for on the second day at sea a terrible storm that smelled of the wrath of Ustora berated the Víkingr ships - the salty waves dashed their hulls, the wind tore at their sails, and the angry sea roiled and sent the brave warriors hurtling into the deep. The rumbling above as the storm ravaged the fleet was like the vengeful bellowing of the god of storms as she raged through the night. Finally, as the sun rose on the next day, the last of the waves came and the skies began to clear. The sea was littered with the dead and the remains of the destroyed vessels, the bold expedition doomed at its’ start. Two fortunate souls manage to survive, washed ashore on the sodden beach of a strange island - they are without food, shelter, or a way back to Nordrhald. Having no other choice these two warriors gather themselves and move inland and they soon discover the island is far from deserted. With only their wits and blades at hand they must brave the dangers of this mysterious island as they explore and ultimately try to find a way home. My partner and I will of course role as the two stranded warriors, exploring the island, uncovering its’ secrets and meeting those who inhabit it. As they fight to survive along the way they will come to grow closer and face the trials of true shield-siblings in this fantastical story of greed, kinship, and perseverance. Following the humiliating loss of the battle of Manzikert the Imperial court is rife with intrigue and an aroma of paranoia clings to the air. All the while the Muslims continue their expansion and Turkic hordes flood into Anatolia giving further embarrassment to the supposed prowess of the Romans. Now Andronikos Doukas, the man who betrayed the Byzantine monarch at Manzikert, has declared the Basileus dethroned and seeks to place his cousin Michael as the new ruler. With civil war on the brink, order fraying at the seams, and the lingering threat of the Mohammedan infidels, strong men at arms are needed for the trying days to come. One such man is a brave soul who comes far from the north, seeking to join the renowned Varangian Guard - men of Thule and elsewhere that have pledged their blades in service to Constantinople. This man’s reasons are known only to him, wether he seeks adventure or a new life in a new land. On his way to Constantinople he stays in the city of Preslav for some days and it is here that he meets a promising new liege lord, a powerful dux looking to strengthen his realm for the coming struggles. Impressed by this vagabond warrior the dux invites him into his personal retinue and it does not take long for a stronger trust to grow. However, when this valiant northman eventually comes to meet the dux’s wife at court he finds himself ensnared in a scandalous entanglement of forbidden passions with this fine Greek woman. With his standing and his very life hanging in the balance this northman must decide on his loyalties to his liege and his growing affair with his new lover whom his heart burns for even as his soul is riveted by fear of discovery. My partner (male preferably) will role as the warrior from afar who has come seeking employment in Byzantium’s Varangian Guard - ideally this character, fitting with the historical mold, will be Rus, Anglo-Saxon, Norman, or Scandinavian (Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, or Icelandic). That will be up to my partner. I will role primarily as the dux’s wife, a Greek woman who is the youngest daughter of a noble from Constantinople. Trapped in a loveless marriage she falls easily for the strong, fearless, noble warrior that has joined her husbands’ retinue. These two will face the challenges of their intimate affair as well as navigating the harsh, unpredictable life of citizens of Byzantium. Shame and certain death are ever present dangers in this romantic epic. They form alliances and coalitions and make war on their rivals, their ambitions the spark that drive them. One such ambitious man is Oda Nobunaga, known by many as the “Fool of Owari”. Having succeeded his father Oda Nobuhide and seized lordship of Owari the young Nobunaga would then go on to defeat the Imagawa clan at Okehazama. This paired with gaining the fealty of many great samurai afterward emboldened Nobunaga who then set his intentions on further increasing his power. Nobunaga turned his attention to Mino province to the north that had long been the domain of the Saitō clan. The current head of the Saito - Saitō Tatsuoki, young and foolish - has proven inferior against the Oda, having lost much ground and likewise many of his retainers to the Oda, the latter through both betrayal and death in battle. The Saitō clan now face their doom, Oda forces have laid siege to Inabayama Castle and it is here that our story begins. The Ikari clan have long served the Saitō faithfully, even now in the face of certain defeat they stand steadfast and unwavering. As the castle is about to fall the head of the Ikari sends his son and daughter away despite their protests, his final wish that they might survive and see to the continuation of their clan. He also asks that they visit vengeance upon he that has disgraced them and their Saitō masters alike. My partner and I will role as the son and daughter (brother and sister) mentioned above as they set out on a quest to avenge their fallen kin and rekindle the prestige of the Ikari clan, washing away the shame that Nobunaga has wrought on them. We will be playing upon the events following the historic seizure of Mino and Oda Nobunaga’s revelation of his intent to conquer all of Japan, these two siblings seeking out enemies of the Oda clan and forging alliances of their own in a bid to stop the man who would come to be known as “The Demon King”. Victory or an honorable death is all that there is for them. [hr] [b]Synopsis[/b] After the death of Agathocles, tyrant of Syracuse and self-proclaimed king of Sicily, the large number of Italian mercenaries he had hired to aid in his long struggle for lordship of Sicily have been left without employment. While many returned to their home region of Campania some would stay in Sicily, finding the island comfortable and relishing the adventure to be had in a foreign realm. One year has passed since the death of Agathocles and these mercenaries have come to the city of Messana where they were welcomed with open arms. The people of the city have always been peaceful, kindhearted folk and absent to the ways of war. The mercenaries while enjoying the comforting hospitality in time grew restless and thirsted for spoils. Late one night the small band betrayed their hosts, attacking the Messanians savagely. The few surviving men of Messana fled south while the women were taken as wives and the children as slaves. With Messana now serving as a stronghold for them these mercenaries have found themselves in an unchallenged position. While Syracuse would make for a strong and dangerous foe the Greeks cannot risk leaving their city vulnerable to an attack by the Carthaginians who seek to expand their hold over Sicily - by coin if not by the sword. The Carthaginians meanwhile cannot be bothered with so minuscule an issue as a band of mercenaries on the far side of Sicily, and with Rome so near any aggression on Messana would be seen as Carthage moving to seize the island for themselves. Rome is of course the most immediate and likely threat, but the Republic is surrounded by enemies and any commitment on Sicily would sure enough encourage their other foes to make a move. It is this that the mercenaries have to mind as they prepare for further exploits across Sicily. The choice roles for this RP are slightly looser. My partner and I can role as a pair of these Mamertini - “Sons of Mars” - mercenaries and partake in raiding, robbing, and ransoming, and other forms of depravity as we navigate the delicate political and military situation of Sicily at this period in time. We can follow history as it happened shaping our characters around it or we can go an alternate history route if we so choose. Aside from the Mamertini there are other possible routes to take, a pair of local sellswords or would-be adventurers that try and take a stand against the marauding mercenaries, or perhaps two brave warriors enlisted by Syracuse or the Carthaginians, maybe even vengeful Messanians looking to oust the mercenaries from their home as well as take bloody revenge for what was done. The options are aplenty in this gritty Hellenic story. [hr] [b]Setting[/b] Nisa, the capital of the Arsacid Empire, skipping to key dates/events within the range of 20 BCE to 2 CE. [hr] [b]Synopsis[/b] Frahāt IV, Shahanshah of the Arsacid peoples, has long been in conflict with Gaius Julius Caesar in a bitter struggle for the lands of Armenia. The Romans have proven a brutal adversary but the Parni King of Kings has time and again refused to relent - until finally he did. Amid his ongoing war with Rome, Frahāt’s son was captured by a longtime rival of the Shahanshah and flighted away to Rome where he was held as a token of diplomatic leverage. At this time Caesar was embroiled in conflicts elsewhere and sought a temporary end to current hostilities with the Arsacids. With little choice - at risk of losing his son - Frahāt agreed to a truce with Caesar and in exchange for the return of the prince Frahāt released all prisoners of war, returned all captured Roman standards, and paid a large monetary sum. A deal that heavily favored Rome in the end. However, along with the returned Arsacid prince came a woman; a beautiful slave girl named Musa that was sent as a “gift” of goodwill for the King of Kings. Graceful, radiant and delicately pale in the desert sun, she had thick brown hair and a face shaped by Venus herself. When she arrived in Nisa and was presented to Frahāt he was instantly ensconced by her elegance and beauty. Musa is now the wife of the King, or rather his fifth wife. Yet presently she has purloined all his affection and consideration for herself, the King’s first wives and their sons set aside and stewing in scorn. With the King of Kings now so suddenly wound around her finger merely by way of her charms Musa holds the fate of the Arsacid Empire in her palm. This RP follows the real historical narrative of the Italian-born slave known only as Musa who would go on to become the favored wife of Frahāt/Phrates IV of Parthia, later baring his child who himself would become king over all of his fathers’ first sons in a very forward but gripping tale of plotting and manipulation. I will play the role of Musa and my partner (male preferably) has the opportunity play a role of their own specification. Maybe Frahāt’s first son and heir, or his most trusted advisor who holds deep suspicions of the Roman slave-queen, or maybe even a secret lover of Musa’s aiding in her ambitions. In this world of Persian political intrigue there are few to trust and many to suspect in the grand game of power. As the world recovered from years of bloody and devastating global war various nation states arose in the now former US. The Commonwealth of Augusta, the Boston Federation, the Eerie-Ontario Confederacy, and the Democratic Republic of Raleigh - these are the major powers of the north. The year is 2090, roughly sixty years since the end of World War Three. The powers of the north and east coast coexist in a “cold peace”, false smiles and gestures of serenity cloak acts of assassination and espionage. The people work in the factories and shops and toil in the fields for their respective nations, in the evening time watching and listening to propaganda from the establishments. Culture has stagnated as all resources and labor go into domestic development and the militaries. Isle au Haut, Maine - the capital state of the Commonwealth of Augusta - has come under scrutiny after allegations that the military base built on it is a front for a black site where “enemies of the state” and other priority detainees are kept. A leak from a supposed inside source has suggested that the facility also conducts secret research on prisoners aside from cruel methods of interrogation and usual executions. Since becoming a one party state twelve years back the Commonwealth has grown increasingly aggressive and more militarized under the policies of the Chesuncook Lobby which has lead to colder relations between it and its neighbors. My partner and I will role as two operatives from factions/nations of our selections sent to infiltrate and investigate the Isle au Haut naval base - an alias for “Camp Rho” - and uncover the sinister secrets of the facility, ultimately revealing a plot by the ultranationalist Chesuncook Lobby that must be stopped for the safety of the surrounding nation states. Spies and double operatives are everywhere, for in this Cold War information and espionage are an edge any nation worth it’s salt will utilize. When a brilliant scientist seeks to defect to the West, offering valuable research data and other intel, the CIA send an operative to help him in his escape to the other side of the Iron Curtain. The operative goes dark and no further word is heard through the contact chain from the scientist. A Central Intelligence mole soon reveals that both the operative and the scientist have been detained and are being held in Mavgora though their location is unknown. Mavgora was originally a part of Romania though would be officially established as its own socialist republic after the end of the Second Great War. Like its parent Romania, Magvora is not part of the USSR but is among the Eastern Bloc nonetheless. The folk of the small Republic are fiercely patriotic and devoted to the communist cause. And very suspicious of foreigners. Faced with the danger of losing the defector and the agent, as well as the possibility of compromising, Langley takes immediate action. Two of the finest agents that the West has to offer are dispatched to Mavgora, their mission: to locate and recover both the scientist and the missing operative as well as the scientists’ dossier. Failure means loss of a valuable asset and information as well as the dangers of leaks if the agency man breaks under the reds. My partner and I will embark upon this daring mission as the two agents sent to Mavgora. And you will never know for none of that matters. All that matters is your lot in the system and that you repay your outstanding debt to greater society. So says the Ministry of Judgement. You have spent the last decade working in the mines on the desert world of Vesoria. This was not a “profession” of choice but a sentence placed upon you for past misdeeds. For you are a convict, a foe against the good of the Commonwealth and a nuisance to the betters of society, this you were told the day of your “rebirth” as an amnesiac forced laborer. Your crimes were terrible and far-reaching, deserving of death. Yet the Ministry of Judgement marked you as “possibly redeemable” and instead of a public execution you were sent to the penal colony of Vesoria on the edge of Commonwealth space. Every day you toil soaked in your own sweat for twelve hours. Pounding at the cold rock of Vesoria with pick and hammer and drilling into the chalky scuff with power tools as your muscles scream for relief. Those who try to sneak a break or slow pace the guards quickly remind of their expectations - or make a cruel example of them. Come days’ end your reward for your travail is a single foul tasting “meal” and a container of water. Your place of refuge a one room shanty with a hard bed to recover on before the next shift. Today, however, - after ten unchanging, agonizing years - something [i]happens[/i]. A guardsman is found dead inside the mines, stripped of his armor and equipment. His heart torn from his chest and on his forehead a crude “R” is cut into the cold flesh. The guard work themselves into a frenzy as do all the other inmates as an investigation is put forth. The guards ensuring the laborers that the perpetrators will be found and a painful punishment administered for those guilty and any others who would even think of such further vile defiance. Soon after tempers flare as the brutality of the guards and overseers grows worse than ever and the longstanding feelings of resentment begin to boil over. And you, unbeknownst as of yet, will play a great part in what is to come. When the shackles of oppression have grown too heavy so shall the rage of those oppressed. Set in the dystopian setting of a penal world my partner and I will take up the roles of a pair of inmates that are pulled into the heart of chaos as the fires of rebellion ignite across Vesoria. [hr] [b]Synopsis[/b] It is the dawn of the twenty-third century and humans have long broken the chains binding them to Earth, spreading across the furthest reaches of space. As humanity explored and settled itself on worlds beyond the United Terran Federation was formed soon after and an interstellar government established as the nations and peoples of Earth came together to embrace the future at hand. As the generations have passed humankind has branched far, colonizing entire star systems with adventurous zeal - the wonders and riches of the galaxy without end. But like with all great endeavors there are no shortage of perils to be found exploring alien worlds - many of which are beyond human comprehension. When an emergency call goes out from the frontier planet of Gaia A-7 a response team is dispatched to survey and handle the situation as necessary. The team consists of six marines, an engineer, a medic, and their starship pilot - all enlisted in Terran Federation military. As the team are inbound a freak anomaly causes them to arrive days later than they were scheduled, the distress signal however remaining. With their communications equipment not working and a mission still to complete the team follow through with the original plan and touch down on the planet. What was believed to be a simple outpost on the jungled planet is revealed to be more than meets the eye and the response team will soon discover just how sinister the situation at hand his. What began as an investigation becomes a desperate fight for subsistence as the team must get off-world and warn their superiors of what they have found before it is too late. In this RP my partner and I will take up the mantle of the UTF response team and attempt to unravel the bizarre happenings on Gaia A-7. As the team consists of nine total characters there are three approaches to take. (A) My partner can create and role as a single team member while I control the rest of the team as well as all other characters. (B) My partner and I can split the team between us - and possibly other characters to be seen. (C) My partner and I can create two paired "main" characters while the rest of the team takes the background, perhaps even being killed off early on. This is open for discussion! [hr] [b]Synopsis[/b] The “sickness” first began in Lambour City in the early morning hours on what would have been a usual day in the bustling east coast metropolis. Clinics and hospitals across Lambour City were swamped with an unexpected and shockingly massive wave of patients suffering from what appeared to be a severe flu and a citywide quarantine was immediately put in to effect. Roads out of the city were closed and the harbor sealed off from entry or departure. As the mayor reached out for national aid the sudden crisis went into full swing as roughly twenty hours after the outbreak patients began dying in scores across Lambour City. Morgues were overflowing and panic set in as people were literally dropping over in overcrowded waiting rooms. It was then that the true horror began. Just after midnight frantic calls came out from hospitals and morgues claiming that patients "stated as deceased" were rising up and attacking staff. At the same time calls were coming in from all across the city of such bizarre attacks; sick people bursting from their bedrooms and attacking their spouses, neighbors breaking in and pummeling and biting victims, the list continues. Attempts at detaining and reasoning with these "plagued individuals" have been for naught and the military has been rushed in to seal off the whole county. The nearby military base of Fort Wayne has been tasked with rescuing and evacuating those that are not sick and clearance has been given to put down any assailants. There are three ways I have in mind for my partner and I to go with this concept; a pair of soldiers, a pair of police officers, or a civilian pair - siblings, a married couple, two close friends, etcetera. The military and police pairing will be more focused on evacuating civilians while contributing to finding out the cause of this sudden "outbreak". A civilian pair will be focused on survival and escaping Lambour City and perhaps given circumstances have a hand in finding out causation. [/color] [/hider] [/center]
