Okays, how to explain... Death and black metal were never about being pretty. They were about evoking a certain atmosphere. The vocals especially get a lot of flack by people who don't understand this or take it into account, since... They're not like the vocals of any other form of music. They're not supposed to be treated as vocals, but as another instrument used to evoke this atmosphere. It is ugly, ugly music, but that's the point. In addition, the actual musicians happen to be some of the best in the business. Death metal guitarists are able to pull off incredibly technical stuff, and the drummers are, well... Being a death metal drummer is very hard, physical work. To be able to drum that fast and that intensely is not something a lot of people can do. ...Same with the vocals, actually, since you need to put in a lot of training and actually know how to do it right to not completely wreck your vocal chords whilst doing it. I understand completely that it is most definitely not for everyone, and it's a very acquired taste, but it's also very misunderstood by people who just call it "noise" (when it's not; it's brutal and harsh, but there's still an essense of songmanship to it) and those who completely ignore how skilled the musicians are just because they can't get past how brutal and harsh it can be. ...Ahem. ^^;
Real metal is the nerdiest music. Like Manowar.
FUCK YES.
