He has a few nicks and scars normal for anyone that spent a majority of their life playing around in snowy forests and mountains. His rich brown hair is fluffy and hard to tame, and it reaches down to his mid-back if it isn't tied up or braided. He normally wears sturdy shoes and warm layers (though will gradually shed them in hotter climates). Wears a single earring at the moment, though both of his lobes are pierced. Carries a spacious brown backpack with a wooden charm attached to it and a bed roll on top. At first meeting he seems friendly, inquisitive, and helpful, and that is all generally true about him. Nils is also playful, enjoys teasing others, and complains about small things just for the sake of complaining. However, some emotional baggage actually makes him a much more private person than he appears. He doesn't talk in depth about himself, and though fine with expressing most other feelings he doesn't like when his true frustrations show through on the outside. Rarely one to outright lie, he prefers to speak around his issues or simply deflect and change topics. Even if he were to talk about his troubles, his words usually get caught in his throat. Though he has little experience with the world outside of the Ymir Mountain Range, he is far from naive. Nils is patient and steadfast, and once he sets his mind to something he follows through with it even if he has to think up alternate ways of tackling his goals. He is understanding of others, but when it comes to himself he never seems satisfied. For example, rather than admit he is oblivious on a topic, he will feign like he knows what he's talking about even if he has no idea. It's a good thing that he's fairly clever and a quick learner, at least. Background: Growing up in the eternal winter of Frostford City was not as rough as most outsiders might think. Old families were well adapted to it, and even for new residents (as rare as they were) the community was always more than willing to help each other out. It was easy to feel close to other Frostford natives, even when you lived nearer to the mountains than not and your closest neighbors were a ten minute sled ride away. Nils' family home was one such case, and it still stands on Frostford's outskirts. Though snow was always present, the environment he grew up in was made warm by the kindness of neighbors, the antics he got up to with other local kids, and the love of his small family, made up of himself, his parents, and his grandfather, even during the years Cipher was still active. His days were spent meeting up with friends and exploring the wilderness, hiking, snowshoeing, poking fun at tourists, competing with grandpa, and attempting to emulate the craft work of local artisans, all the while keeping up with homeschooling. Yes, while young Nils was just like any other child in Frostford... almost. He never was quite the same as the others. He knew it, his friends knew it. It was apparent in his earliest years, but he really began to notice as he grew up. And the same was true for his family as well. Where other folks had uncles and cousins, great-grandparents and stories to go along with them, the Sokki family had none of that. And when they didn't have guests over, they tended to do things differently from the other households in Frostford. Sometimes only a little different, enough to notice but not to question, a word or gesture no one else in town seemed to use; other times it was in ways that completely baffled his friends when he happened to mention it. And yet, whenever Nils asked about it, his normally talkative parents grew tight lipped and uneasy. Their uncharacteristic silence on the matter affected their son, and eventually he adopted their reticence. He tried harder to blend in with other kids and stopped talking about their family's 'oddities' in public. Only in public, though, as with most young boys being denied something only made him crave it all the more. That, and frankly Nils didn't want to be made to feel ashamed about something he didn't understand. As he continued to grow and expressed his feelings on the matter, his family did end up sharing some things with him; a remark about the land of more than a few thousand years past, a name that they called themselves by. But no more than that. It wasn't enough, especially since nearly every conversation was chased with empty promises to explain things at another time, or when he was more mature, or when he really needed to know. The secrets that they kept from him became a sore point between Nils and his family, and remains so to this day. Eventually it became clear to him that he would have to find some other way to learn what he wanted... and one option was by getting the information out of his grandfather. Even though the man had never actually agreed to give said information up, Nils figured there wasn't much else he would rather ask for as a victory prize. Oh, that thing about spending time competing with grandpa? Another 'odd' thing that no one else in Frostford seemed to do with their own grandparents, but it was a frequent event heartily encouraged by the man himself. Nils' grandfather, the small family's patriarch, was an accomplished man. He left the city every now and then on business (the nature of which Nils wouldn't find out until right before starting his own journey), but every time he returned grandfather and grandson would go at it in all kinds of contests: skiing, whittling, wrestling, foot races, games, even eating competitions and tongue twisters. There was one time that Nils even borrowed an experienced Pokémon of the family to try and win against him in a Pokémon battle. No matter what competition Nils suggested, he never once won. That old man was unreasonably strong...!! And so, at fifteen years old and a record of 74:0 in grandpa's favor, Nils took a different approach. He applied to be part of Evig's introductory Pokémon League. In his application he listed his honest motivations for wanting to travel Evig: the pursuit of both truth and power. Either he would find what he wanted out there, somewhere, or the experience would give him the strength he needed to return home and wrest it from his kin. Nils wants to discover a lot more about the world and the region, but especially about his family and himself... and the League would be his next avenue to do it.
