[@Whoami] That is an option! I'm actually in favor of using the rules to frame our characters, but I'm not requiring it. 

The only edition I've had experience playing is 5th, so those would be the rules I'm familiar with. I've actually got links to an online copy of the book, as well as PDFs for most of the expanded material for 5th.
