[color=gray]Wulde's father Walter was a successful mechanical engineer who was an avid outdoorsman and sportsman in his spare time.  At some point, Walter became convinced that end times were nigh, whereupon these latter activities morphed into an obsession with survivalism.  

Walter owned a hunting cabin where he and his family would visit on summer weekends; eventually, Walter began to spend more time there alone year-round, to the point of neglecting his family and even his engineering practice as he modified and fortified his cabin into a doomsday bunker of sorts.  His attitudes grew increasingly paranoid and antisocial.  In the end, his wife Judy, Wulde's mother, filed for divorce, which Walter did not contest, insisting only that his oldest son, Wulde, be allowed visit regularly.

This Wulde did, and he spent many a weekend with his father honing survival skills Walter was convinced his son would need:  shooting, hunting, wilderness survival, first aid martial arts, carpentry and metalworking, basic mechanical and electrical repair.  Walter died when Wulde was 19 when an escape tunnel he had been digging from his underground shelter collapsed on him.

Judith had already remarried by then, this time to a forensic accountant named Ben Gerber, who often consulted with the police.  Wulde liked his stepfather, different though he was from his dad, and heeded his advice to pursue a career in finance.  Accounting might not be exciting or glamourous, but it paid well, and promised a better life than hunkering in a hunting cabin's basement, awaiting the collapse of civilizations and escape tunnels.

But Ben Gerber's profession proved no safer in Halcyon than Walter Riddenhouse's.  His last audit unearthed the machinations of a vampire-run criminal enterprise, and when his investigation got too close, somebody had him killed.  He had followed the money to his doom.

In the wake of this tragedy, a police detective approached Wulde unofficially and offered to put him in touch with the Wardens.  The detective's intent had initially been simply to Wulde ask for their help, but instead he ended up joining them. [/color]
