Two souls from different generations — different worlds — were staring up into the sky. The little boy's head rested on his father’s lap while the older man gently petted through the calico curls of his son. ‘Do you see that star sign above son?’ the raspier voice of an older man asked while he focused on one of the signs that could be seen during this time of year. These were simpler times. Better ones. Dad wasn’t sick… Anatoliy looked up at his dad’s thinning face, it was gaunt from years of stress and a hard life, but the majority was covered with a well groomed beard and loving eyes. The young boy’s eyes moved from his father’s face and up to the starry sky. He laid on his back, putting his hands over his chest and stomach area, and shook his head, ‘I don’t see a thing,’ he responded. ‘It just looks like a starry sky.’ he clarified more. Voronin chuckled at his son’s answer which got Anatoliy to look at him, ‘Maybe you can’t see a thing because you don’t know what to look for. Look a little harder. You should know about the sign you were born to,’ he pointed up into the sky to give his son some guidance. ‘See those bright stars, where it makes a very light v-shape before those other bright stars from the center of that shape branch off and curl into something of a cane shape?’ Anatoliy looked in the sky for a minute and his face scrunched up as he continued to search, ‘I don’t see a thing,’ he spat out those words before sitting up and looking at the sky again. ‘What do you mean brighter stars? They are all bright!’ the boy was getting frustrated as he continued to try and search for the shape his father was talking about. ‘Toli, please, just look a little more,’ Voronin tapped his son on the nose before extending that same finger out towards the sky and towards the bright stars that formed the astrological sign: Scorpio. ‘What do you see at the end of my finger?’ This caused the little bow to grumble as he looked past his father’s finger and focused around to see the shapes that were being spoken about. That was when he gasped, ‘There! Is that it!?’ Anatoliy got excited, he noticed the brighter stars that looked like what his father was talking about. ‘Draw it for me,’ Voronin leaned over and grabbed a few items. He handed Anatoliy a sketchbook and a pencil — this book had so many sketches that were very impressive for a nine year old boy but he was a natural artist like his father. The little boy took the items before getting to work. Sketching the formation that he felt like his father was talking about before giving the items back to his dad. Voronin took the sketchbook and pencil before a smile appeared on his face, ‘Very good. Do you remember anything about the signs or Scorpio from what we learned this last week?’ he asked his son while giving him the sketchbook and pencil back. ‘Da! Scorpio is a water sign. Cancer and pisces is also water,’ he wrote around his sketch of Scorpio that it was a water sign.'And you said I was born near the beginning of the reign of Scorpio,’ Anatoliy glanced at his father when he brought that up because he couldn’t remember the days Scorpio reigned. ‘Do you remember the dates from when Scorpio starts to when it ends?’ his father asked with a gentleness. Anatoliy shook his head no. ‘Can you guess?’ he pressed. The little boy looked at the sign, ‘I know Scorpio starts sometime in late October because I was born on October 31st and… it ends in November,’ he looked at his father for some reassurance. ‘Good. That is correct, Scorpio starts on October 23rd and ends on November 21st,’ Voronin watched as his son wrote those dates down with a dash in between to indicate when Scorpio is. It kept a smile on his face. ‘Do you remember anything else?’ Anatoliy looked up at his father with a smile, ‘Da! I do! You said Scorpios are passionate and loyal! And you always say just like me,’ he was excited to mention that to his father. Something that he remembered about his own star sign. Voronin tapped the sketchbook, ‘And they are known to be strong, inuitive, observant, protective, intense, secretive, and mysterious,’ he explained. This caused Anatoliy to write around the sketch of Scorpio even more, listing all the traits that a Scorpio could have, and smile back up at his father. That was when a sickening sadness clouded his body and he frowned. ‘I wish you were here…’ he whispered. That was when he looked back to notice the sketchbook and pencil was gone. That he wasn’t a little kid anymore and when he looked back to his father that was right beside him — his father was gone. He was alone on that worn out stargazing blanket and the campfire began to die. Anatoliy stared at the fire which was once roaring and now it was coals. Hot embers. ‘I wish you were here.’ he said with more conviction as tears began to roll down his face. ‘It’s not fair that you had to go. Why couldn’t it have been someone else? Why couldn’t it have even been me?’ Anatoliy curled his arms around his legs and placed his face into his knees.
