Evelyn turned her head to get a glimpse of Ocean who was with Iliana then back to River. “I know, we’ve talked,” she joked, humoring herself with a smile at least. “You’re not so bad,” she assured. Conversation went on decently enough. “And let me guess, one of those people would be Andy? I think she'd rather eat broken glass than talk to me again.” Evelyn’s lips danced in amusement. “One of those would have been her, yes. It’s good to hear you’re making impressions.” Maybe she gave her, essentially, ‘play nice’ advice too late in the instance of Andy and River. But she was willing to bet they could both be bullheaded and set in opinions in their own right. “The layout of camp seems pretty straight forward. I think I can manage. And I’ve never been much for gossip. I think knowing camp exploits and drama would only sully my opinion more.” Evelyn was pushing her food around but stopped to look at him as if he had said something of genius. She nodded and while she doubted he was after her approval she still commented, “Smart.” They both indulged in their meal and drink for a time. She always undersold the importance of a meal, energy input verse output especially after the box and during healing. That, with some of the other physical demands camp forced out of them, food shouldn’t have been taken for granted, particularly with the hall’s abilities. She wondered how quickly camp would struggle if the hall ever collapsed. “If there’s somewhere else you’d rather be, I won’t stop you.” River interrupted her train of thought. “I’ve been made very aware that I have the personality of a rock.” She shook her head softly dabbing at her mouth to speak to him. “No, I'm where I want to be. I think you’re fine,” she assured. “A little more interesting than a rock anyway.” She smiled. “Thanks for uh… Being decent. It’s been nice having a normal conversation before everyone hates me tomorrow.” He gave a defeated chuckle. Evelyn’s brows pinched together for a moment as she looked past him like the answer could be there. “Why would I hate you?” Then her eyes flickered back to him. Unless he was the new contender for camp leader with the intense training schedule and he assumed that would drive people against him. It wasn’t favorable, a new person coming along and giving demands without earning respect or rapport first, however, drill sergeants didn’t exist to make friends and take things slow. As the threads joined together, she inclined her head in silent understanding. Poseidon must have raised another soldier or two, depending on Ocean’s position. Evelyn thought about telling him about the deceased siblings that came before to camp; that it seemed Poseidon was pushing his rule on camp via his heirs. Whether to help and discipline camp or stir trouble was unknown; therefore, not her place to say. He also already mentioned he didn’t care for gossip and it would sound awfully accusing. The information did make her relook at River. She was talking to the potential new leader the whole time. Was he stressed about it or born ready? Was it a discussion or an order from Poseidon? It must’ve been tricky coming for such a position as an outsider but River seemed mostly unbothered, aside from some odd self-dismissive comments on his own company: that he was like a rock in personality, that she could go elsewhere, even thanking her for being decent to him. Evelyn braced to say something, she needed to say something - even she was unsure of what – encouraging or assuring or more wisdom of camp but by that time he had stood up and taken their plates. She exhaled through her nose. “Thank you,” she said towards him taking their dishes. “It was nice meeting you. I’m sure I’ll see you at this party thing tonight.” “You too. You will.” Once his back was turned, Evelyn rested her elbows on the table, chin perched on her clasped hands, eyes drifting after him head to toe. What an unexpectedly delightful yet odd man. After he showed quite evident disdain for the idea and had no faith in his own social charm, he was still going to drag himself to a party. But if they were expected to bend to his rule, he could flex a little for them before everyone hated him tomorrow, according to his predictions. Evelyn had to wonder how he’d demand obedience from an unruly bunch of demigods especially when he showed dashes of disparaging himself. Maybe a whole new façade would step forward. She sighed to herself. She should have broken her own rules and stroked his ego and assured him more, or, if he was open to it, given him some advice on how to handle some of the acquaintances she had come to know. No sooner had the thought come, it was dismissed. River still had aspects to show yet. “Psst.” Evelyn glanced in the corner of her eyes to spy Daniel leaning over like he was asking for answers to a test. “You been okay? Haven’t caught up with you much since...a lot.” True enough, the two hadn’t conversed or checked in on each other since Pandora’s Box at least, but she didn’t overly mind with her own ugly wound to nurse and Sylas business. She shifted her arms to rest on the table as she turned to him. “It’s okay. I’m fine. I barely got scratched. What about you?” she said, adopting a much smoother and easier voice. If Daniel was up and about, she could imagine he was currently in a good enough state and he would thrive in the party environment. Which she should have been sharp for too. She gave a small apologetic smile as she excused herself from the hall. “I'll see you later.” Evelyn would be sure to catch him at the party if circumstances permitted. For now though, she headed for the likes of her own cabin.
