Well, it seems the secret escape tunnel isn't so secret, clearly not cleaning it for a few centuries didn't hide it well enough.  
Verinric's life has been largely safe in the Imperial City, but he surprises himself with his calm reaction, he murmurs under his breath as he draws upon his reserves of magicka and weaves it into the form of a summoning, his mind reaching out to a Dremora, luring it, binding it and pulling it through the liminal barrier, as the creature appears he simply points towards the nearest assassin. With a guttural cry the dremora lunges forth with its axe.

Then, just in case the assassins are smart enough to attack him, he quickly follows up with a classic Third Barrier, wrapping himself in a glowing shield of magic.
