The truth of the matter is, well, the observations are mostly correct. His only regret of the events that transpired from his infidelity is repeating the vicious cycle of his own mother’s infidelity and the brutal divorce that shaped him as a sixteen year old. While his interest in Diane has long since faded, he still would do whatever he needs to do to make sure his daughter is safe. One could suppose that makes him a bad husband, but not particularly a bad father. Though he doesn’t really think he did a bang up job on raising Amelia either. As far as he is concerned, he let his wife do too much, and himself too little. And that’s why he’s appealing the courts for full custody. Okay, that’s not why but it is a good foundation for the case in his mind. It’s 100% a spite play for his wife going through with the divorce rather than weathering the storm. People have faults and Paul has a very bad problem when someone crosses him, makes him lose, or generally embarrasses him in public. It all stems from the emotional and physical abuse his father started all those years ago in the eighties as a result of the divorce. Don’t get mad, get even. Just like a woman to kick a man when he’s down. The worst thing in life is to be a loser and you’re the champion of losing. When he was younger he thought he had pushed all of his father’s words down, but they still shape him to this day. But who was Paul before this middle aged crisis? This divorce? Him being reminded of his father who he ensured died alone? He was a good man. Maybe. Always polite, albeit with a gruff midwestern sense of humor and snark. Charming and intelligent, able to follow most conversations. Deeply passionate about basketball and music, a byproduct of his two coping devices to prove to himself and his father that he wasn’t a loser. He was in a band once, and his career aspirations were never in accounting but in basketball or music production. He’s still not sure how he ended up where he is today. If he saw a therapist he’d probably agree that his infidelity was a result of boredom and a lack of satisfaction in life. Diane was a wonderful piece of him once, but he lost the plot. If she hadn’t embarrassed him by formalizing the divorce, perhaps, his actions would reflect differently. However, “should’ve could’ve would’ve” are the last words of a fool. His father was an abusive piece of work, and his mother divorced him (and seemingly abandoned) her son at the tender age of eight years old. His father’s only became worse following the divorce and his emotional and physical abuse laid imprints into Paul that would last his whole life. The only decent person in his life was his twin sister, Carol, whom he protected the best he could from their father’s wrath. A young Paul swore to never be like his father, though the echo of a petty alcoholic man would indeed be in his future. He and his sister dove into sports and other hobbies, anything to be away from the house, and the two of them only separated when college came calling for them both. They went to schools on separate coasts. They found success and love, but without the support they had found themselves accustomed to. Paul began attending Norfolk State University in 2001 with a basketball scholarship and ended up with a Major in Finance. One year later he began dating Diane Foster following a connection at a Christmas Party he found himself attending. Both of them graduated from the university in 2005 and soon married before settling in Glen Rock, New Jersey. On paper it seemed pretty idealistic as Paul withdrew his dreams of playing professional basketball in lieu of using his finance degree to create a foundation. He soon found work at an accounting firm led by Andrew Conti and William Trachtenberg. The ideal family life suited Paul well enough for a time, but in 2014 he met Sarah Jackson, whom he had a sexual relationship with while she was working at the firm. A year later, she bore signs of pregnancy, a situation they elected to keep to themselves. He thought about telling Diane at the time and trying to figure things out but was told by his bosses that it would “look bad for the company” and that it was a “losing strategy” if he was to get a significant promotion. So he kept it aside and supported both Diane and Sarah to the best he could. The pregnancy would end with an abortion, a bitter irony, but secrets don’t last long in this world, however, and eight years later it came out he was having an affair. Diane was shocked by the affair, but moreso that he had essentially been keeping it under wraps for almost a decade. The stickler, however, he didn’t tell Diane about was that Sarah had been diagnosed with cancer, a sickness that would take her only a few weeks after the divorce was finalized in 2023. So he had lost both of them, whether he liked it or not. The emptiness in the house doesn’t bother him as much as the echo of his father in his head, calling him a loser and a moron. Before the state of emergency, in a fit of anger, he conspired with his lawyers to cut Diane out of Amelia’s custody and had the papers about the court appeal sent to her only a few days before all hell broke loose… literally. Survivor's Personal Journal: Paul had decided, for whatever reason, to call this particular day a sick day. He had attended the funeral of his secretary the previous day and he was still reeling from the effects of dropping off paperwork at his wife’s apartment over the weekend, the loss of someone he was involved with, and of course the Brooklyn Nets terrible moves in the offseason. He had decided to hit up the streets and head to the recreation center to find his center. There was also his ex-wife blowing up his phone over what his lawyers had drawn up and the appeal of their daughter’s custody pending. Some may consider her “moderately upset”. In his eyes it was a light revenge to get her so anxious, because she hadn’t realized just what she had done by finalizing the divorce in the first place. But with no assets, barely any money in the bank, and a teacher’s salary there was no way an accountant was not going to find a way to get the court’s attention if they really had to. And he felt it necessary. When the state of emergency came to note, however, his smug day of relaxation soon changed. He left the rec center with only one concern on his mind: the security of his daughter, and unfortunately this would require him to deal with that very moderately upset ex-wife. Because who else knew about bus routes for the girl’s lacrosse team?
