Whether they acknowledged it or not, there had been a shift in camp along with the season after Pandora’s Box. Usually the camp was more abuzz but perhaps during the party, the new demigods could inject energy and life into the environment once more. Perhaps the old campers would abide by the stigma of a fresh slate for a new year and everything would be less oppressive. Her pen had found its way between her teeth as a half-attempted puzzle sat on her table. Rae, Liv, Nick. The three casualties of late, not including the few sudden exits. How could that all be wiped in the new year. Outwardly, she held no real attachment to any of the deceased or the ones that left but Liv…Liv who appeared so unapproachable and cold as good as saved her when she went under for Sylas. Evelyn couldn’t hold her breath that long, swim that hard, retrieve Sylas and break surface in time. As much as adrenaline pushed her, something else did too and Nick had passed too far away in the woods. A fleeting smile tugged on her lips. It would be big to title Liv her guardian angel. The notion would probably make the stony daughter of Poseidon ill. But Evelyn felt a sadness she could never express her gratitude to her. Nick could never grow into his potential. The confidence and beauty mixed with primal prowess of Rae was missing. Likewise, Cherise’s unique light presence was absent. Last was Liam. What on earth spooked the intimidating mountain of a man away? He never seemed one to shy from challenge or leave when things got rough. Some mysteries may never be solved no matter how many times she unpacked it and rearranged it. Evelyn was particularly guilty of finding no peace in a lack of closure, try as she may not to dwell or wonder what ifs. When she caught herself, she would often affirm that there was no turning back time. Yet she revisited that day often. Leaving Sylas with the Kraken, fighting that winged warrior, the panic, the pain, the carnage. If it wasn’t for the most unlikely of pair, she would have ended up dead too. Her gaze fell to her paper again. She delicately plucked the pen from her mouth and resumed her sudoku, trying to bury her thoughts in something slightly more productive. Later... She had turned off the heater and stripped her coat, beanie and scarf off a while ago, finding the temperature to reach something more comfortable. It wasn't impossible for the elements or weather to be tampered with at camp, and it's something she quickly learned to embrace without too many questions. While the party wasn't compulsory, there was some obligation to go. If River could force himself to attend then she surely could. Besides, she had told him she'd see him later, both to the likes of him and Daniel, and she'd rather be a woman of her word with that particular company, big or small. Plus, there were fresh campers to meet yet. Evelyn opened her wardrobe and weighed her options for a moment before pulling a dress from a hanger. She gave a soft hum. It might have been a bit glamorous, better suited for an indoor party but it was New Year’s Eve, why not wear something a little more for the occasion. She peeled the rest of her layers away, substituting her bra for a strapless one and light underwear. She stepped into the white dress pulling it up and shimmied into it the rest of the way when it got difficult and hugged to the wrong places on her body. Evelyn smoothed down the creases and turned to her side in her wardrobe full length mirror testing the side-on view. Her scar was hidden beneath the material from either angle and the dress fit her form snuggly. Evelyn shifted to her knees looking for the right shoes. She tucked some hair behind her ear as she grabbed the white open-toe pair with criss-cross straps. She rose to sit on the bed as a brace as she slipped into her heels and did them up then went into her bathroom for some cosmetic touch ups. As a shimmering silver stroked against her eyelids, she did catch herself wondering what her intentions were and why she was dressing to impress. It always felt nice to be validated and feel beautiful and confident but there was something under the surface she didn’t want to admit. Nonetheless, she resumed with her mission, coloring her cheeks a fraction, plumping her lips with a natural tint gloss, eyeliner, mascara. She styled her red hair to slink over one shoulder. With nothing else left to do, she forfeited her cabin for a party. An openly foolish mistake but she wouldn’t be alone. The first step out the door she was expecting to be met by the harsh bite of cold but nothing came. It remained snowing but felt the same as inside. When the field came in view, she was taken aback by how it had transformed into a winter wonderland, minus the temperature. It could almost be on a family advertisement poster with all its activities, the bar, table full of food and lighting caught in one frame. However, less poster-friendly was the drama that indubitably bled into the parties. With her head high, she smiled to Andy and Trinity gently as she got herself a serve of punch. “Evening ladies. How are we today?” She offered pleasantly. The last demigod she wanted to feel snubbed by her was an Ares child. Otherwise, she held a decent relation with Andy. “So good. And only gonna get better. Right?” Trinity nudged her friend, but Evelyn saw the blonde all but elbow the daughter of Hecate. “The night's young,” she said with her friendly smile in place. What way the night tipped for them was dependent and subjective. Evelyn looked at Duke by the food table, happening to be in the middle of an apparently delightful treat. His shoulders looked slack and him at ease. Maybe they had some hypnotizing property in them. The thought brought an amused smile to her features. Then there was another man she was yet to meet by some assembly of kid games it seemed. She would rather have watched and observed but who knows how long both would be standing there waiting for something to go underway. Evelyn approached carefully. It wasn't that she expected him to pounce into attack or anything, though it was always possible at camp she supposed, but she mostly wasn't sure he wasn't reserving spaces for particular company. She smiled at him. “Hi. Do you mind if I...” join you, join the game, stand in your company Evelyn wasn't sure which she wanted. So it just hung there until he granted or rejected her company as a whole. She pointed to the setup. “What's this?” There were holes and ladders and balls and things. The objective seemed transparent, but then what? Suddenly, Evelyn caught herself in her dumb question. What if he viewed her as an idiot for not knowing such an obvious game or as uncultured? Either was unfavorable. “I never really played much...of anything,” she confessed, her voice dipping in insecurity. She shouldn't have had to explain herself to anyone and he didn't ask but she felt the need to justify her lack of knowledge still. Evelyn took a sip of her drink before another realization struck. She had done it again. Raced ahead with curiosities without introducing herself. “Mmm.” She frowned, hurrying to swallow her latest mouthful. “I'm Evelyn. Sorry.” She held out a hand.
