The rule for Prestidigitation does say for one of the options, "You instantaneously light or snuff out a candle, a torch, or a small campfire,", so I'll allow a flame to appear above the finger. But he won't be able to light anything other than a candle, torch, or a small campfire on fire. 

Keep in mind that there is also an orb of light following the party around to light up the room as they investigate. ^_^
