She had consumed a fair amount of alcohol and her mind was swimming a bit. She enjoyed the conversations she had though, it was quite the eclectic bunch of people gathered here. She set her glass down and proceeded to make her way out of the room. She waved to some of the others like Ralph and Sam (those two were annoyingly adorable for each other) but before she could make it up the stairs she nearly ran into someone else. She glanced up, annoyance on her brow before she settled when she saw it was Miguel. He had been gone a decent portion of the evening; though Millicent wanted to pester him about it she felt it was unwarranted at this stage. ”Oh, Miguel. Nice to see you. Are you all right?” Miguel practically jumped as he ran into someone, breaking out into a cold sweat. It was almost like lying about having indigestion had cursed him with actual indigestion. Or maybe that was just the nerves getting into him, making him think he was on the verge of shitting himself, when that wasn’t the case at all. Either way, he felt his stomach growl as he struggled to remember the name of the person in front of him. He’d barely interacted with any of the other nominees. “Oh hey… you! I’m doing so great! What about you…fam?” Millicent stared at him as he stumbled through his sentence. ”You forgot my name, didn’t you?” She’d have been more insulted if they didn’t have the barest of interactions from before, and he disappeared during dinner. ”Millicent. Again.” Now she was irritated and a bit tipsy and that was not a good combination. ”What have you been up to then? Looking around where you shouldn’t be?” Miguel blew air through his lips. “No way! That was just a test to see if you remembered,” he paused, hearing the words come out of his mouth as this quickly spiraled into the most awkward interaction he’d ever had. ““And if looking in horror at what I just did to the toilet in my room counts as looking around where I shouldn’t be, then I’m guilty as fuck. If this place wasn’t haunted before, it’s definitely haunted now.” Millicent eyed him. Something was off. It could be related to….his bathroom problems, but Millicent doubted that. He was lying. She couldn’t quite prove it, though. ”Come off it, Miguel, I know that’s not true. I’m not faulting you if you were going around looking at things. Lord knows I want to scour this place from top to bottom if for no other reason than to figure this family out. So let’s drop the pretenses that we are both doing something totally innocent. You missed out on a lot at dinner and I can fill you in if you haven’t heard, but this family is tense.” He stared at her for a moment. “In here, now,” he said, before opening the door to his room and rushing inside, slamming it shut behind Millicent if she chose to engage. “Can I trust you? No cap?” She didn’t seem outwardly evil. “Because someone here is fucking with me - someone put this in my room!” Out of his pocket, he produced a photo of a grave, with a single sentence written on it in neat penmanship - asking how an offrenda works. Millicent followed him inside quickly, realizing she may have just entered the room of someone who wanted to do her harm, when he pulled out a photo and showed her, asking if he could trust her. She looked at the photo, unsure what it truly meant, but recognized it meant a great deal to Miguel if it had him worried. ”I mean it would be weird for me to say no you can’t at this juncture, but yes. Because, truthfully, I am being blackmailed too.” She didn’t have the newspaper clipping with her, but still. ”Someone clipped out part of a newspaper and left it in my room with a message.” It felt good to get it out since she had been holding it in for a while. ”Okay so someone here is fucking with us. I tried to get a feel for the people we were eating with. There’s a few that are off, but I am not sure if they are behind this. And we can’t rule out the family; they knew who we were before we even came here.” “Oh, I have a man on the inside - that kid, Jeanne. We’ve been DMing since I got the invite to come here. She’s a fan,” he explained nonchalantly. Trust with him was very all or nothing - with the exception of one thing, of course. But he had decided Millicent wasn’t behind all of this, and finding out she was being blackmailed too… He had to wonder what for - if she had done anything like he had… or if she was just being blackmailed for being a hack. “But that older lady? Eleanor? I’m almost positive it’s her. I can’t prove it, but the handwriting is so neat and old white ladies love to show off like that.” He paused for a moment, before starting to pace. “I haven’t talked to really any of the other nominees - talked to Sam a bit at dinner, but I think he was mostly interested in my meat - in my food.” Millicent nearly grabbed Miguel’s arm at the mention of Eleanor but she controlled herself. ”Yes! I mean I didn’t think it was her right away for your reason but I do not trust her. She had a weird vibe to her at dinner, especially to the two people who asked for steak sauce, oddly enough.” That still struck her as odd. ”Yeah, I bet Sam is interested in your meat. Seems he is with Ralph also.” Millicent didn’t fully trust either of them, but they weren’t at the top of her distrust list. ”I talked to a few. The Drag Queen seems on the level, but I do not know if I trust the preschool teacher. Something’s off about her. Or the doctor. We had a conversation and I couldn’t get a read on him.” Miguel flinched as Millicent said that Sam was interested in his meat - and he knew that she didn’t mean food. “Well, unfortunately for him I am very very very straight - as straight as they come, really - not that there’s anything wrong with being gay or anything, it’s just not me. Nope, I, Miguel de la Cruz, have no interest in men. I’m just a bro.” He then paused. “Doctors have shit handwriting, so it’s not him. Hmm. It has to be someone in the family, yeah? No one else knew both of us were coming - hard to blackmail people unless you’re prepared for it.” Millicent ignored the question of sexuality, that was Miguel’s journey, but focused on the topic. ”Definitely. The family all had a choice in nominating us, though Eleanor had the final say. If we are here based on someone’s nomination it stands to reason they know of us and our history potentially, but Eleanor is the one who approves a nomination or not. They’re all sketchy.” Miguel gasped. A horrible thought occurred to him. “Do you think everyone who came here is being blackmailed? Not just us? And if that’s true… is that the point of this? Is this entire award ceremony pretense some bullshit to get us here?” ”Oh, 100% everyone here is being blackmailed. I highly doubt it is just us two. See, I knew it was weird that a bunch of random people were called here to win a huge sum of money from these random jobs we have. I told them and they said I was weird.” Millicent felt justified. ”Oh, it’s incredibly weird - like full disclosure, I’m not here for the money. I’m here because a video on the truth behind this place will get me set for life,” he admittedly easily. ”Like beyond the ghost hunting shit - this award is cursed. Not everyone who wins the award is heard from again. To be honest, I assumed that they were going to try to hunt us for sport.” Of course, the award being cursed was by far the craziest rumor he’d heard about this - he’d heard one rumor about another nominee that was actually insane. ”Maybe we should get them, before they can get us.” Millicent felt her energy run high. Miguel was having that effect on her. ”So you looked into this award? I mean these people do seem like the type of have people run around on an island while they pick them off. I told Sam and Ralph I fully expect someone to be killed. Not sure I want to be the one to do that, but if I find out they have like….a murder basement? Then sure.” ”Yeah, of course I - wait… wait wait wait. Millicent. Bestie. The world’s greatest magician. Are you telling me you didn’t even google this place? This award? You just… accepted a weird ass invitation and showed up??” he asked, completely incredulous. He assumed everyone would have looked into this place - that no one would show up completely blind. Well, maybe Sam would have. He wasn’t the world’s greatest ghost hunter, not like Miguel Millicent held her hands up. ”In my defense, it was more so the offer of a free vacation. I didn’t much care for the award. And I know some information on the family. But apart from that, no, I didn’t do much investigation because I assumed, wrongly so it appears, that this would just be a peaceful trip, drink some wine and enjoy some food, maybe win money but even if I didn’t it was a break away from…everything.” Millicent trusted Miguel, but would not go into further detail. At least not yet. ”I’m willing to admit it was probably a mistake, but one I can help correct. I don’t trust any of the family and can help look into them if need be. I’m pretty good at reading people. Part of the perks of the job.” ”You’d die first in a horror movie. Except you’re white and a girl, so you might make it further than you really should,” he said, shaking his head. ”We’re going to work on your survival instincts. But maybe - maybe we start off by getting some more numbers. See what other people know. Like Clue, except we’re peaking at cards with consent.” There was no way that could backfire. ”Whom do you trust out of everyone else then? Sam seems fine, but it could be a front. I guess out of everyone him and Ralph seem the most trustworthy. Everyone else I coudn’t get much of a vibe check on. All right, if we are going through with that I suggest we rope Sam and Ralph into our Scooby Gang.” Millicent ignored the insinuation she would be killed in a horror movie. She knew the tropes, she just didn’t expect this to be a horror-movie-scenario. ”Bet, I call dibs on Shaggy then. Who do you wanna be - Velma? She’s kinda nerdy.” He figured all magicians were nerds. And if Millicent trusted those two… well, Miguel hadn’t really talked to anyone here, and maybe this time, he could trust Sam to not fake evidence. ”Sure, I can be Velma by process of elimination because Ralph is clearly a Frend and Sam is obviously Daphne. She solved basically every mystery anyway. Ok, we have a plan. Are we grabbing them now or waiting until tomorrow?” ”Now. I can show you all what I found in the basement - and get some more shots for my video while we’re at it.”
