The storm raged on. As the day broke, the worst of it calmed, but the sea did not. The waves were high, making the crossing unsafe. This was unfortunate because just at 8 am, the body of Renee was found at the bottom of the stairs. One of the maids, Aurélia, found her. She screamed. This alerted a few of the other staff, primarily those in the kitchen. Gordon and Felix came quickly. Gordon pulled Aurélia away from Renee. Felix kneeled close, without touching her. “Gordon, take her into the kitchen. Get her something to drink. Send Aziza to get Elenore.” This was not a good spot. He knew leaving Renee’s body would mean spending more time away from protecting her than he would like. He, however, wanted a sheet to cover her. To protect those still living from having to see her. He made a mental list of everything he knew; everything he would report when the moment came. Now he waited. It had been a weird, awkward night, but in the end, he had had fun. He woke up with a start. He frowned, trying to figure out why. He had expected to sleep in late due to jet lag and alcohol. Ralph grabbed his phone; it still had no signal, and checked the time: 8:00 am. That wasn't enough sleep. He knew how he reacted to the messy effects of jet lag. If he didn’t get more sleep today, he would likely get sick later. However, now that he was awake, he should check and see how breakfast worked today. Hopefully, it would be straightforward, and with like 75% less family drama. Ralph changes his shirt and rinses off his face in the bathroom before exiting. As he enters the foyer and heads for the stairs, he sees Elenore in a dressing gown coming hurriedly from the family rooms and stopping at the top of the stairs. She wasn’t looking at him. She was looking down the stairs. Ralph followed her gaze and took two steps back. His heart was pounding. What happened? How? Ralph didn’t see it, didn’t watch Elenore. Her hands shook; she opened and closed her fingers, trying to get rid of the shake. He didn’t see the look on her face. He couldn’t know what emotions crossed them. She gathered her wits before him and started down the other set of stairs that didn’t lead to Renee’s body. She was talking to Felix, but Ralph didn’t hear or understand it.
