I wouldn't exactly call it a pet.

Any separate monster from an ability isn't a separate being--its effectively a drone that's an extension of the base character. So you'd really be like Vinnie & Spike the whatever whatever and your character would be fundamentally inseparable as a duo. One side would be the left hemi (the "thinker") and the other side would be the right hemi (the "instinct")--both would have half a brain if you want them to both be able to have thoughts.
