Although the barrage of Zeus’ thunderbolts had already thinned the enemy herd, enough of the Arlaaekans had survived to remain as a threat to the city and its citizens. Chris made a timely catch as a broken chunk of an unstable fell precariously above a group of civilians. Now holding an impromptu weapon, he hurled the rubble at an incoming alien fighter. Because the aircraft’s wings were clipped, it whirled out of control and crashed into the empty street beyond where Chris stood. He then turned to find the next foe who might threaten the civilians he was defending. However, he instead noticed that the Arlaaekan forces were deserting Lost Haven and returning to their mothership. Moments later, a bright light blasted through the smokey billows of Lost Haven’s destruction, with a missile—the Omega javelin—burning red as it entered Earth’s atmosphere. But just as suddenly as this doomsday weapon illuminated the sky, a blue and silver blur burst skyward towards the Omega Javelin. Chris’ heart raced as he watched Icon attempt to slow down this weapon. Once the guardian of Lost Haven had not only prevented it from impacting with the city but also reversed the missile’s course back at the Arlaaekan mothership, Chris would be a liar if he said he was surprised at Icon’s monumental feat. Because Chris had witnessed Icon perform miracle after miracle, the only sensation of wonder Chris felt was witnessing Icon usual superhuman strength. “There you go, Big Blue” With the destruction of the Arlaaekan mothership via their own weapon of last resort, the day had been won. However, the Guardians’ work was not yet over. Even with the alien threat no longer present, they still had civilians in need of rescue. Before Chris took to the skies, his suit’s sensors picked up two signatures moving at lightning speed. When the two individuals finally stopped, his suit’s databases identified them as two people Chris had not encountered since the Pax Metahumana crisis from a few months past. “Sorry we’re late, Iron Knight, but we were—” Thunderbolt said, but he his words failed him when he saw Radiance’s lifeless body before the wrecked monolith. His sister, Boom, gasped before placing a hand on Thunderbolt’s shoulder. “Radiance paid the ultimate price so the entire world wouldn’t,” Iron Knight explained to the two speedsters. “But we should give Icon some space. There’s still people needing to be saved. You can fill me in on where you two have been later.” Thunderbolt and Boom nodded before zooming away across the city to look for civilians in danger. “Take all the time you need,” Chris muttered. With these somber words, Chris departed to join the rescue effort.
