Even as a kid before experiencing any education, when angered, when happy, when panicked, things would simply happen around her. Ness's parents would know what was happening of course, being longstanding witches themselves, and soon coming to the rescue with counterspells and repairing whatever might have broken, but the number of such incidents if Accidental Wandless Magic would put a seed into their minds. Ness would, at the age of six, begin learning hedge magic and wandless casting from her parents. Guided by books and teachings made long before wands had turned the fashion, often in the most obscure of Gaelic dialects, she learned a number of methods in magic, conjures and invocations. Her parents, aware of the limits of middle schooling, would also begin teaching the basics of education. Writing, Reading, basic mathematics, geography, these would also be gone over with some degree of outdated information. Ness would excel in some of these, her reading especially so, and grow more than passable in wandless magic. She would also accompany her parents in their occasional travels around the country, at one point attending a small gathering of Irish witches at Derryoober Bog where she would approach an old Womping WIllow. Picking up one of the fallen branches, as the willow was busy defending itself from a flight of birds, Ness brought the branch to a wandmaker who was among those in attendance. The man was overjoyed, considering that few were willing to bother such a tree, and by the end of the week Ness was handed a wand carved from that very branch. Her father was proud as could be, and boasted of the event often, while her mother was a bit more severe. It near-became a running joke by her father that Ness would bolt for the first Womping Willow she saw, though quickly the joke died down. Altogether it had gone beyond her parents’ wildest hopes, though soon enough Ness was off to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and soon enough after that Ness decided that Hogwarts was altogether not the place for her. The castle was drafty, uninviting in its size and cold stone, full of strangers who jabbered and ghosts who gossiped, and of the teachers she found most to be cold, unfeeling folk who taught strictly. She would get in trouble on several occasions as a First Year, from using disallowed spells while practicing to sneaking out from the castle at night to camp out in the near countryside. As a result, the young girl found herself in detention, and the company of the Groundskeeper, far more often than most. It took some time for her to settle into the rhythm of the school, struggling as she was in interacting with the more worldly wizards, but eventually Ness found herself with a small group of friends from similar hedge backgrounds. In time, Ness would garner a reputation as an outdoors witch whose sense of invention and ‘rules breaking’ countermands general Hufflepuff tenets, at one point carving a flying charm into her shoes, at another spending a week camping in the Forbidden Forest, and lastly declaring as a pet a Kneazle named Oisin while a Second Year. The Irish witch's skill at duels, however, has been not at all in question, using a number of more dirty tricks as often as not.
