The Beginning

The Awakening didn’t happen in a vacuum. The world was already fraying at the edges. Corporations had grown so powerful that governments bent to their will, and the police seemed less and less interested in protecting the people—especially when crime served the interests of those same corporations.

So the people took matters into their own hands. They donned masks. At first it was desperation: duct-taped armor, stolen bats, cobbled-together gear from pawnshops and scrapyards. An age of vigilantism had begun, where ordinary men and women tried to play hero—or villain—with whatever they could get their hands on. And the movement spread like wildfire.

Corporations soon caught wind of the public’s obsession. Some even endorsed the rise of masked crusaders, sponsoring vigilantes and stoking the flames of a new cultural phenomenon. No one realized then that these same corporations were laying the foundation for something greater: the guilds.

Then came the first Awakening. A warehouse in downtown Chicago erupted in chaos—fire raging, water flooding the streets, dozens dead. No one had a clue what had happened. The media spiraled into panic: was this the work of a rogue “supervillain,” a corporate experiment gone wrong, or some terrifying new weapon?

Soon after, others Awakened. Their manifestations were less catastrophic, but no less shocking. It became clear the world was changing: humanity had entered the age of superheroes. Yet these heroes weren’t like the ones from comic books. No one could fly or shoot lasers from their eyes. Instead, each Awakened wielded a weapon drawn from the stories of humanity—myths, legends, fantasies made real. And with their weapon came transformation, reshaping their very bodies into something stronger, stranger, or entirely new.

The corporations who had once cheered on masked vigilantes seized their chance. They built the guilds, pouring money into them, branding them, and selling the public an image of safety and glory. Crowds donated. Merch flew off shelves. The Awakened became celebrities, soldiers, icons—while the corporations pulled the strings—for better or for worse.

Character Sheet Template
Basic Information
Name:
Alias/Hero Name: (If any)
Age:
Gender:
Appearance (Before Awakening) (What you looked like before your body transformed.)

Appearance (After Awakening) (How your body changed — from subtle improvements to dramatic alterations.)

Awakening Details

Vision: (Describe your Awakening vision. What message was spoken to you? Usually involving a woman standing in the waters of a mountain lake, offering their weapon and speaking a message only they can hear.)
Rank: (1st–4th, which denotes how many items can be summoned; 1st and 4th are rare, most characters should fall within 2nd–3rd. Must include at least one weapon.)
Summoned Weapon(s) (Name & origin of the weapon. Can be drawn from mythology, folklore, or fantasy — but not sci-fi.)

Lore & Power

Origin Story: (Where does your weapon come from? Historical myth, fantasy legend, or iconic fictional source?)
Relative Strength: (Remember: power is tied to how well known the weapon is. A famous mythic blade like Excalibur will naturally outclass something obscure. Let's do a scale from 1 to 10 and I'll ask for adjustments if needed - for example Excalibur would be 10 and would probably be the only 10 since it's a world famous legend.)
Manifestation: (What does the weapon look like when summoned? Any unique glow, aura, or traits?)
Attributes (For the ease of use of roleplaying battles out, you'll assign up to 15 points to your attributes that I'll match up against enemies and do very simple dice rolls, then you're free to RP the result however you see fit - minimum of 1 and a maximum of 5 in any category)

Might: (Raw physical strength, lifting power, and the force behind weapon strikes. Affects how hard you hit and how imposing you are physically.)

Agility: (Speed, reflexes, and coordination. Useful for dodging, acrobatics, and precise weapon handling.)

Endurance: (Stamina and toughness. Governs how long you can fight, how much punishment you can take, and how resistant you are to fatigue or injuries.)

Presence: (Not “intelligence” or “charisma,” but your force of will and confidence. Presence affects leadership, intimidation, morale, and how strongly you embody the hero ideal.)

Instinct: (Represents combat awareness, reaction speed, and intuition. Helps with reading the flow of battle, sensing danger, or making split-second decisions.)

Resonance: (Your bond with your weapon. The higher your Resonance, the more stable and powerful your summoned weapon becomes — and the stronger the physical/magical transformation of your Awakening.)

Guild Information

Guild Assessment Result: (To be revealed IC—leave blank until after your initiation scene if you’d like.)
Affiliation: (Is your character loyal to the guilds, skeptical of them, or just in it for survival?)

Background

Personality: (How does your character view their Awakening? Optimistic hero, reluctant fighter, or something else?)
History: (A brief look at their life before Awakening. What led them to this point?)
Motivation: (Why did they choose to become a hero rather than a villain?)

Optional
Side Roles: (Do you also want to play a supporting character — civilian, journalist, opportunist, etc.?)
Theme Song / Quote: (Just for flavor if you like.)

There is a lot more for me to write, to be honest, but this should be a good setup for everyone. Just note that everyone will be joining the same guild - probably one of the newer, more noble-intentioned ones, so we can play proper superheroes. If anyone has any questions, let me know! I'll bump this as I add information, so everyone has a grasp on what their characters would know - if you want to hold off on backstory until then, that's perfectly fine. ^^

Guess I'll ask here since it's new and all: do our weapons have to be distinct named objects? Or can it also be things more esoteric? For example I was thinking of some kind of cudgel, a sorta cross between "speak softly and carry a big stick" and the traditional Caveman club, if that makes sense.

Ok, I don’t mean to jerk, but the Character Sheet has soooo much information about the weapon, powers, and etc. But why isn’t there a personality and history section for the actual character?

I'm just widening out the 'background' part to have more information on that

@TruthHurts Yes, the weapons/items need to be named because they need to come from some sort of legend, myth, or cultural reference:
"...strength isn’t just in the wielder—it’s in the tale. The more well-known the weapon, the greater its power."

Very extensive OOC! I am still interested, I'd just need to think of a good character and weapon for this.

@Lyla What about something like, "Death's Scythe" or "Bow of Apollo", things that are rooted in their stories but aren't properly named?

@TruthHurts - In cases like that, yes, that's fine... though note that the weapons that are normally unnamed and less known - thus are less powerful. Nothing against that of course and it doesn't at all mean your character won't have their spotlight moments. ^^

@Lyla what's the timeline like for the start of the RP? Is everyone meant to be brand new to a guild/very newly awakened, or is there some wiggle room as long as everyone is in the same guild? I probably have more questions but that's the main one that comes to mind at the moment.

As for everyone else, there's a lot to pick from, and a lot of weapons in fictional works (especially videogames like jrpgs) have weapons based in myth. There's also lists that might help! This one I linked is just a wikipedia list that also includes armor (and other objects that might be fun if they're permitted).

Like for example @TruthHurts if you wanted to go with a bludgeoning type weapon, as long as Lyla's cool with it maybe you could reimagine something like a world pillar as the weapon? Yggdrasil or Djed or something. Just imagining that class from Vindictus where you swing a huge pillar around lol.

just confused a little over the weapon and rank

do we get multiple legendary weapons? is it one weapon with multiple copies or "aspects" of it? do we get one legendary weapon with just adjacent things that don't have to be legendary to summon alongside it determining our rank?

As for questions, in a lot of media involving stuff like this the weapon or object can be stored in a kind of hammerspace. Does that hold here, or do people have to just keep 'em in a corner?

And also, though it seems that they are, it's worth asking since it's pretty major for my character: are the bodily effects of Awakening permanent, or only when using the weapon?

Actually found a cool mace (Sharur) that'll work for my character idea, but that could be fun too...

@Yankee - Timeline is newly joining because we're going to go through assessments at the start, but they could be awakened for a couple months if you want, but not much more than that.

@Burger - I think the answer would be yes to all of those. I originally intended it with the idea that you could have 1-4 different legendary weapons, but some people are also including pieces of armor. I'm also perfectly fine with doing the "aspects" of the same weapon, but only a maximum of 4, of course. I hope that answers that!

@Lemons - Bodily effects are permanent, though if you wanted a "transformation" while using the weapon, I'm fine with that~ And yes, "hammerspace", as in they can summon them from thin air - was the idea.

Here's a little funny:

One of the initial intrusive ideas that popped into my head was dragging someone into the RP and having two characters with the Lance of Longinus. One with Lance of Longinus (Christian mythos) and one with the Lance of Longinus (Evangelion). The punchline being that they were equal in power.

Technically she's 4th rank? Conceptually 3rd? The Wind and Fire Wheels are more or less inseparable as a concept, but they are vaguely two weapons since they're named separately.

I think Murphy's stats are over by 1, which I only note 'cause point buy always gets me the same way somehow lol.

It's usually the minimum 1 are included in said points but I might as well ask if that's the case or is it start at 1 in everything then add 15?

Also this might be answered IC or not even that important, but another timeline question. How soon after that first awakening is this taking place? Since there's mention of merchandise and celebrity awakened so I assume a couple years at least?

I got owned by me going 15/5 is an average of 3, meaning I get 10 points to allocate), then getting crushed by the mysterious sixth stat.
