His younger sister, Clara, was diagnosed with a chronic illness when they were both very young. Since then, most of the family’s emotional and financial energy has gone into her care.

Beneath the light, though, Noel is deeply self-sacrificing. He avoids burdening others with his own problems, even when he’s exhausted. He believes, consciously or not, that being “the good one” is the best way to help his family and be worthy of love. He represses his fear, sadness, and frustration behind a smile. He’s scared that if he lets himself crack, everything around him will too.

Despite this, he’s not joyless. He genuinely loves people. He finds beauty in small things. He laughs easily, but often for others’ benefit.
