This lot had the trail head that would take the group of delinquents to the old camp grounds. An older man, with a large pot belly, sun darkened skin, and well worn hiking boots waited for them at the trail head. He wore hiking appropriate clothes and dark sunglasses. He was probably in his 40s or 50s. Once everyone had left the vehicles, gathered their packs and the cop had driven away, the older man introduced himself. “I’m Dobbs.” He watched as the state vehicle’s dust started to settle. “This hike is long, if we do it quickly we should be at the campgrounds in about fourty-five minutes. No dilly-dallying, I have no desire to be here when the sun goes down.” He turned and started up the trail. They were expensive and the bus system, or her own two feet, were her usual mode of transportation. She probably could drive if push came to shove, but she had never gotten her license. Marco, also didn’t have his license, so the pair of them had been driven up to the trail head by the cop. He was stern and didn’t talk the whole drive. Em and Marco hadn’t talked much either because of how awkward it felt. Getting out of the vehicle and pulling on the oversized hiking backpack Emily didn’t struggle much. She had done a few long hikes, and even a couple of overnight backpacking trips over the years. It was one of her favorite ways of seeing the country. It was why when she had been assigned this community service job she had put down that she had wilderness survival skills and lots of hiking experience. She looked at the group and was surprised to see that Aster, Marco’s friend from UBC, was also there. Em nudged Marco, and nodded her head indicating where Aster was. He was driving a ridiculously ostentatious car. There was another car, a jeep, with a trio of people piling out. She didn’t know any of them. At least they were more sensible. Em was not surprised by Aster deciding to drive that car here. He would probably have a conniption fit once he realized it had dust on it. ”Aster really drove that thing all the way here. How much do you think he paid for gas?” The man who introduced himself as Dobbs started hiking without much fanfare. Emily followed him, she had a little bit of a bounce in her step excited for a nice hike. She hoped that all this community service would at least be fun. If the others were cool she figured they’d make their own fun. They had a week until kids started showing up to get the campgrounds ready for them. Em had plans to do some scavenger hunts and neat hikes for the kids.
