The world spun sideways as Yumi hit the ground. For a moment, there was only sound — a deep, throbbing roar that might’ve been the mammoth, or the blood in her ears. She tried to stand, but a pain like she’d never experienced exploded in her right leg and side, a white-hot fire through her bones. She couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think. She gritted her teeth hard enough to hear them grind as she held back tears. She had had some lingering doubts about the reality of her situation, even when she had felled the mage, but the cruel absence of a pain absorber here swept them away, leaving her with an undeniable fact: This was not a game. This was real. Yumi’s fingers clenched around the haft of her scythe. The handle trembled in her grip, slick with sweat as she pulled herself up to stand on her good leg while leaning against the weapon like a cane. Through the haze, she took in the situation: Roscoe unconscious, Androph and Evie battered… and Aramis in bad shape. A sharp inhale hissed through her teeth; as much as she wanted to help the mage, she had nothing in the way of healing. Only thing I’m good at is killing. The thought echoed solemnly through her mind. Her eyes fell on Evie, whom she had seen use some sort of potion. She’d have a better shot at helping him, she thought. However, before she could move, the beast’s trunk rose, coiling toward Evie as the behemoth inhaled hard enough to start dragging her toward it. Her body moved before she could tell it to. She bit down on the scream that wanted to tear free from her lips as she ran toward the outstretched trunk. Her injured leg buckled slightly, almost giving out, but she drove the spike at the end of the scythe’s haft into the ground and pushed off the ground with her good leg, using the handle as a makeshift vaulting pole to leap high into the air. Yumi used the rotating momentum of the pole vault maneuver to swing the scythe around, rotating her in midair. As she turned toward Evie, she looked her straight in the eyes, then at Aramis, then back to Evie. The exchange was less than a second, but Yumi’s urgent, desperate message was written across her face, plain as day: I’ll distract it; help him. Then she rotated past, and the scythe connected. Yumi landed hard, nearly collapsing as her wounded leg buckled, but she forced herself upright, scythe leveled, chest heaving. Blood filled the air — though whose it was, she could not tell. Her stomach lurched, her vision swimming, but she stood her ground, trembling, but refusing to fall. She glared defiantly up at the monster and shouted, “Oi, debu!
