Children don't enjoy being yelled at by grown-ups. This child in particular finds it rather scary. Tolomeo is also relatively new to Zephyr, so he doesn't know Cascade as well as the other villagers. Factor all this in with the fact that children aren't known for thinking logically, and you’ve got yourself a child who would very much rather swiftly leave the vicinity of the scary shouter than answer questions or give up the first reliable source of warmth he's had for a while.
