And [@Lord Wraith], if you're still stuck on how to get Clark out of his programming, might I suggest combining matt's idea of being startled by people fearing him with the smell of Ma Kent baking his favorite apple pie? Scent is the sense most closely associated with memory and Clark is also supposed to have an incredible nose...So it would be a bit goofy but also quite in character for him.
