Jake didn't know to be ashamed, or to conceal things, so as the pressure escalated he did not stifle his scream. He did not hide the tears that fell from his eyes, as he wished so desperately for it to stop. He didn't like candy. Not anymore. It hurt so much. It hurt so much that he would have done anything to make it stop, including die. And as he held his head, shrieking in pain, the pretty boy stepped on him. Had he forgotten he was there? But no, it hurt too much for Jake to think - too much for what the boy had done to really register. And then suddenly, it stopped - warm vibrations spreading throughout his skull, as a horrible pit opened up in his stomach. He was on the ground, cradling his head, and he felt like he was drowning. Something terrible had happened. But what? All of the voices around him felt like tiny blades, pricking his skin. He just wanted everyone to stop - for everyone to go to sleep. Then he could figure out what had happened - then he could fix things. He sniffled slightly, as someone came to help him. It wasn't one of his friends. That realization made the bad feeling even worse. His heart was beating faster in his chest, and he found himself wishing he could be anywhere else. He didn't know what this feeling was, but he didn't like it. He didn't like things that hurt. "But I'm... I'm supposed to protect people, I think," he mumbled. "And I'm not wet - so why would I be put out to dry?" he asked, accepting the help as he got back to his feet. He didn't remember the way back to his dorm. But Barty had said if they didn't remember, they should go somewhere else in the school. And as Jake looked around the Haven, he saw everyone else seemed to be with someone. Cassie and Annika both were heading out with other people. And he wasn't part of the group that was supposed to stay behind. He blinked slightly, his throat feeling almost swollen. He didn't understand what was happening. But he could follow directions. "Thank you, for helping me," he said, a smile on his face that didn't quite reach his eyes, before Jake left the Haven. And rather than return to his dorm, he set off in no particular direction, his mind preoccupied with one question: Why do I hurt? He'd never felt alone before. He didn't know the word.
