For each witch, the gift is different, as unique as its wielder. Florence's mother, Valentina, brews potions and other remedies; her grandmother, Sofia, can reshape flesh to her desires; and her great-grandmother, Ana Lucia, could erect great constructs, crafted only from bone. Yet for just as long as the di Angelo women have been witches, so too have they been cursed. A terrible curse, transforming the witch into a mindless monster, filled with rage and bloodlust. Her great-grandfather had passed when Ana Lucia transformed, her newly razor-sharp teeth more than suitable to pierce through his chest, as she devoured his heart. She hung herself in shame the next day. Sofia used her gifts to help victims of the war, reshaping their features into ones that were more recognizable; she was slain by monster hunters and died alone. Valentina has lasted the longest of any di Angelo witch in ages, yet she has abandoned her craft entirely, and spends her nights sleeping in chains. And even with such measures, her transformations are increasing in frequency; she has little time left. It is into this context that Florence di Angelo was born, the seventh child of a seventh child - and the only daughter in her generation. Her family lived in Venice, as her father was a caretaker of the nearby island, Poveglia. While two of her eldest brothers were already grown, with spouses and children of their own, they lived in the same home - all thirteen of them, squeezed into a space far too small. All of the adults worked, with the exception of her brother's husband - he stayed behind, minding the younger children while the older ones attended school. Most of Florence's fondest memories of childhood are with him. He would take them all on outings across Venice, teach them to read and to write, and played games with them whenever they wished. In some ways, he was more of a parent to Florence than her mother or father ever were.
