Paul didn’t quite understand why. They always had a ton of fans at every race. He didn’t understand the explanation that had been given to him that Argentina fans were a little more crazy and intense. Someone had cited issues at other sporting events in the past. Paul was set up in front of Team Valkyrie step repeat backdrop greeting fans and posing for pictures and signing autographs. There was a commotion that started in the Carrera fan zone but it seemed to travel through the crowd. All at once Paul found himself being whisked away by his guards as the fans. Paul was disoriented and confused until he saw that the fan zone had become a free for all brawl. He saw a little girl get separated from her mother as fighting broke out near him. Paul forced his security guards to stop and gather up the frightened child as he forced his way through to the frantic mother. He then allowed security to whisk them all away from the manic crowd. Once they made it to a back stage area one of the security guards escorted the mother and daughter to an exit. Paul was trying to calm down in the pilot’s trailer but he kept seeing the meaningless violence that had spilled into the Valkyrie Fan Zone from the Carrera’s. He kept seeing the face of the frightened crying little girl. This was supposed to be a family sport. Paul couldn’t help thinking what was wrong with the Argentinians?
Alexander was reluctant to reopen the fan zone after the fans broke into a brawl. Unfortunately the team was under contractual obligations with FIAR. They made some changes to the security and established clearly defined areas with rope stanchions to help separate the various areas in the fanzone. It would hopefully prevent any further incidents along with a heavier security presence. Alexander ensured that the meet and greet for Paul and Dorian had extra security and more control. They had also mapped out escape routes to extricate the pilots if violence broke out again. He also made sure there was food and drink available to hopefully help cool tempers and reduce frustrations that fans might be feeling having to wait in line. He had gone through his prerace oxygenation therapy. He was as ready as he could be. His race suit’s compression felt good and supportive. Paul went through his prerace checklist with Carmella. Paul was sitting at the starting line ready for the qualifying race to start. His hands rested lightly on the control yoke and throttle. Alexander was sitting with the race engineers. He had a headset on. He spoke into the microphone. Alexander: “Okay Paul, remember to use the ELS thoughtfully. Your timing will need to be flawless. Remember that the ELS capacitor and battery are starting off topped off. You are ready for this. Remember to use the mag tracking to your advantage. You got this!” Paul smiled and answered back. “Damn right I do!” The race started and Paul was clearly focused and in his element. His racing lines were smoother and more elegant. He was picking up microseconds in every corner and chicane. He was not afraid to take the mag track up the wall if it was a faster time for him. Paul’s run was fearless as he tried out new racing lines that favored his ELS strategy for speed. Paul brought the ship across the finish line. Carmella was screaming in his ear. Carmella: “That’s P2 Paul! P2!” Paul threw his fist into the air triumphantly. The run had felt good and he felt in control. He knew what he was doing and why for every move. Paul felt good about the new direction his racing was taking. He pulled the ship into the paddock garage. The team was celebrating around the garage. He climbed out and thanked everyone on the team for their support. This time the set was on a rooftop terrace of one of the buildings at the track. Paul had taken off his racing helmet. His hair was matted to his head by sweat and he had a Zap drink in his hand. He slugged back the electrolytes to replace what he had sweated out during the race.
Aurora: "Paul, second on the grid, showing that whatever it seems to be that you're doing! How are you feeling about fighting with Beatrix tomorrow, and making the best of your grid position, and what looks like a breakthrough ELS system?"
Paul looked as relaxed as he was going to get. He was grateful that he was not strapped back into an upside down couch. “I welcome a rematch with Bea. I really enjoyed our fight at Spa. I am looking forward to the rematch. Of course this time I am chasing Jenn. I have been working on improving my skills in ELS. I have been working on some new strategies with ELS to help our speed issues. It seems to be working.”
