Just my two cents: If a scenario or campaign is too lethal players will act like dead men walking. They won´t be careful as chances of survival are slim anyway and even the best plan won´t ensure that they end up in one piece. So most likely they will act in a gung-ho manner which might be detrimental to the tone of the game.
Well, that would actually fit the source material more believe it or not. Borderland itself is a test of willpower more than anything, and they have many MANY characters that's totally gone insane from pressure in the source material. I'd argue most game in the series reward the bold more than the cowardness. I understand your concern but for me death is unnegotiable, it is the essential part of Alice in Borderland.
Funny you mention 'dead men walking' because they ARE the dead men walking. Borderland is literally the place between the earth and the afterlife where people fight for the last chance to live, even if they don't remember it.
