Here's what I'm thinking. I would likely play a woman who has lived in the town for a long time. She has been deep under the spell, but lately it has been slipping. She has begun noticing the strangeness of the routine life she's led. She doesn't understand why she always ignored certain things before, and why everyone else still seems to. It's like her perception has been altered - mistaken in some way for as long as she can remember. But she is starting to see the truth, here and there. And her behavior is changing. She also has faint memories of a different, colorful life - either from outside the town, or before it got this bad. But she can't remember the details.

This kind of set-up could eventually lead her to a state similar to "the Basket Case". But I don't want to claim that role really, as I would rather spend more time getting there: waking up, noticing, and facing the consequences of that.
