With a joint in one hand, and a cast iron skillet in another, Ettie is what some would consider the epitome of a hippie southern grandmother. Having lived a long life, she aim's to spread kindness and has always been considered a shoulder to lean on by members of her community. She's quick witted and has a blunt nature about her - though like most older southern women, she hides her bluntness under the floweriness of words. The older woman is known as one of the town gossips, but not one that will spread your information - just someone who likes to gather a lot of info on others simply because they're nosey. Yes, Ettie Mae is a nosey little shit. 

She enjoys nurturing the minds of others, especially if they are younger than her by a generation or two, and always has a spare glass of sweet tea with a side of conversation for anyone who find their way onto her porch. A hardworking woman, if Ettie is not in her kitchen, she can be found in her small yard doing things like gardening and the like. An extrovert at heart, Ettie loves being around people and helping them in whatever ways she can. [/indent]

[list][*]Born Ethel Mae Shaw, Ettie grew up right here in Pines Holler. Her family was poor, and struggled to make ends meet. Despite that fact, Samuel and Myrtle Shaw made sure that their children had any and all necessities - often times going without for themselves. Ettie grew up being relatively close with all of her siblings, and still calls them on the phone periodically. 
[*]She did fine in school. Nothing impressive, but nothing horrible either. She was seen as one of the more popular kids in school - though that had nothing to do with actual social status, and more so on Ettie's magnetic personality. Ettie graduated high-school and moved on to get her cosmetology degree shortly before marrying her high-school sweet heart, Theodore Willoughby. 
[*]Theodore was good man, who provided for his family through active duty military service. He never tried to change or restrict Ettie. Together they had three children: Theo Jr, Aveline, and Isaiah. Theodore died at the age of forty-two due to a heart attack. 
[*]While Theodore was away with the army, Ettie found herself growing close with their neighbors and community - but one neighbor grew closer than the rest. Her name was Elizabeth, and she was the most gorgeous thing Ettie had ever laid her eyes upon. With their husbands both away for work the two women grew close over the years - From the outside looking in, they were just normal neighbors who shared stories, helped each other with their kids, and just liked spending time together - and that they were. At least until the night that Lizzie kissed Ettie, changing both of their worlds permanently. The two of them knew they had feelings for each other, but kept it hidden out of respect for their husbands and fear for their families. Ettie still isn't quite sure if she cheated on Theo or not, seeing as how she and Lizzie never shared more than a few kisses until after his death. Regardless, Lizzie and her family moved away from Pines Holler in the early 2000's. Ettie hasn't been in another relationship since. 
[*]Ettie opened Magnolia's Salon back in the late 80s. She worked their until about ten years ago, when the arthritis really started setting in. She now rents out her chairs to other aspiring cosmetologists. 
[*]Taking in niece, Callie, didn't really come as a shock. With Waylon being the only sibling that ever stayed in Pines Holler like herself, Ettie was more than aware of the person he had become in his adult life. She wasn't close with Waylon, but made sure to keep herself involved for the sake of Callie. When her brother and his wife proposed the idea of Callie coming to stay with her, Ettie didn't hesitate at all. Her whole life now was dedicated to making sure that her niece turned out to be a half-decent person. While she's taken a small step back in that regard, Ettie still makes sure Callie always knows she has a safe place to come to.
